UTEP @ RICE Game Thread

Sucks Man, the kids are there dressed and ready to play and then they cancel the game. That's just tough wish they would've had a better way of avoiding this expensive inconvenience SMH.

Utep doesn't do antigen testing normally. Once Rice demanded that it be done, there was no way the game was going to be played.

Just sucks. This was the first year in a long time when we didn't look like a decent 2A team and we just got derailed.

Yeah I feel like this may be the end. Had this not been a covid year I think we actually may have had a winning season. Today just stinks more, cause it was literally at the last minute.

After hearing small business stories and Covid stories, this really is nothing but I realize we all need our distractions.

Not surprising, with all the cases across the country it was bound to happen. Sucks that they flew to Houston, when have the game canceled.

If this is true then shame on UTEP for trying to hide potentially positive players. I wonder if we have had some players test positive all along?

Aren't they tested by C USA 3 times per week?
Just going based on what Taco said. It all depends on how fast the PCR results are ready. Otherwise why would Rice be asking for Antigen tests and also why isn't UTEP reporting positive tests prior to today (forced too by Rice)?

Which players missed the UTSA game? Dimel used "missing" players as part of his excuse for losing.

I'm not saying that they were trying to hide positive test. From what I understand, the antigen test does not say whether or not you have covet. apparently, all it does is tell you if your immune system has been activated. I'm not a doctor by any means, but that's how it was explained to me and not by a doctor.

From what I understand a positive antigen test means you are considered positive (because of high sensitivity). A negative antigen test is not as specific, therefore if the antigen test is negative a PCR should be requested if COVID is suspected (because it has a much higher sensitivity). Problem with the PCR is the turnaround time for results.

So if RICE was concerned that we had positive players and the MWF PCR tests were pending, then they could have asked for antigen tests. If this was the case and they cancelled the game then we obviously had player/players with positive antigens.

Gotcha! Sounds like we have a handful of people that were positive for the antigen test.

The NFL has been getting their teeth kicked in with COVID positives. I wonder if they’re having internal discussions about closing shop for a minute.

Once again, these players from college to pro are supposed to be in their bubble. [SMH]

Any travel won't allow for a true bubble. Therefore the NFL regular season, NBA regular season and college sports are impossible to play without major roadblocks. In addition to this a true bubble requires 100% human compliance.

Having teams group together and split the cost of a bubble would have been the best chance for college basketball (at least for pre-conference play). Take out the schools that opt out and find 30 spots for groups of 10. Travel, quarantine and then play for 4-6 weeks.

The NCAA has acknowledged as much in its efforts to want to make the NCAA tournament in one spot. They can't afford to lose March Madness 2 years in a row. They will go all out to create something similar to the NBA playoff bubble.

This does mean USM game is cancelled? Another thread had one saying the spread was bad.

Was this just one player who had a false negative, traveled with team, forced antigen test given (insistence by Rice) and test shows positive infection resulting in spread.

Not sure I follow what he is trying to convey? If I'm reading it correct then he is saying he didn't want his players checked at all before games?

Sounds like he and his team just got caught with their pants down.

Reading between the lines its seemed for weeks that most of the conference has doubted the validity of UTEP's testing. No doubt that Rice had doubts and wanted UTEP to use their testing. I would be very interested to know if Rice made any other school test in Houston. Seems like they had no confidence in UTEP's testing.

I don't think that's correct. USM didn't come weeks ago due to covid issues on their team. UNT wouldn't come to EP because EP was a covid Hotspot and offered to pay UTEP's expenses to play in Denton. They wouldn't have offered if they thought UTEP's testing was suspect. FIU cancelled due to their own covid issues as did UAB.

Yes. My understanding is that Rice totally caught him off guard. Insisted on antigen tests too if I read a previous thread correctly.

This is the first of a handful of mid major games canceled after false positives and Dimel is acting just like HC of the covid positive team.....pissed off and embarrased.

Dimel has done a good job, it happens. He should not take it personally. Spring ball should be much better. Work on the offense and secondary.
