Thought I’d bring this up since Houston is in its 2nd Final 4 in the last 4 years and only 12 years removed from leaving CUSA , in which we used to beat them annually including the last two times we beat them in conference by at least 10 points in 2013.
We haven’t had a tournament appearance since they left, while they’ve enjoyed their 7th appearance, including 5 straight current streak while we have just endured our 3rd straight below .500 finish in conference. And our conference is significantly weaker than when Houston was with us. They used to play in front of crowds of about 2-3 K when they were in our conference and now they play in front of just a little more than 1.5 K more than us in a city at least three times our size. Not surprised by their resurgence especially in that location but more disappointed in our demise since they left.

Their recommitment to athletics was pretty evident years ago with their new football stadium (during their Mack Rhoades tenure) and the new basketball arena.

Also, it helps them to have 10 Paul Foster’s in Fertitta.

Landry’s Select Club is overrated anyways!
I wonder if it’s just a coincidence that our football program’s decline from mediocrity began right after Rhoades left.

Attendance doesn’t matter. Houston couldn’t draw flies to their games. Didn’t even sellout 30,000 seats when they had a good football team. Once you win, you can get financial commitments and then fans will come around.

Yup. They’ll start donating and committing their financials when they see there is something worthy of it and that includes investing in admin and personnel they believe will produce results. Which is why you won’t see it anytime soon since we’re stuck with Senter and Golding

It needs to be said that they also have a president that said “athletics are the doorway of a university”…without at all discounting or downplaying what educational institutions exist for in the first place.

In other words you can have both a fine institute of higher learning AND solid athletic programs.
