Joe Golding Interview

Barnes, Ahamad and Thomas are smaller guards. Terrell, Camper and Horton go 6'4" to 6"5 and Frazier is 6'6". If we go this small then Golding needs to implement the center into the half court offense with pick and rolls and lob plays to keep the defense honest. Also the center has to rebound and block shots which are for the most part impossible when hedging all the time. There would be no backside help either. We would have to shoot and defensive rebound WAY better than last year. Personally I don't think this will work.

Playing Jones at the 4 gives us more size and versatility. He is very efficient on offense, rebounding and blocking shots. With a year under his belt and some more strength I would imagine him as a big contributor this year. IMO Jones also allows us to use Hamilton more for some inside out game. I wonder if he could even play some SF too?

I think Terrell or Camper are big, strong and athletic enough to play the 3 some minutes if needed. I think Frazier could play a little 4 too, but he really needs to be a wing (3 and D finisher) player for this team to strive. Finding another 4 should be Goldings highest priority right now.

PG Terrell/Barnes, Thomas
SG Camper, Ahamad/Horton, Hebb
SF Frazier, Camper/Terrell
PF Jones, Frazier
C Kalu, Hamilton/Mbengue
I hear ya, but Golding already said he's going with 4 guards. Unless he changes off that before next season starts I think you'll see Barnes start. Yes we definitely need a capable 4.

Kap is THE sports authority when it comes to EP sports. As good sports reporters come and go, Kappy has and will continue to be here. With that said, he’s just the tenured professor coasting it. As the authority he can call attention to or apply some heat for local sports and I just don’t see him doing that.

I assume the ad executive side of Kap is a force, because of the success of Townsquare. But sports Kap and Sports Talk is just ultra generic sports show. Thing is there is just no competition for Kap to elevate his game. 1380 had Tipton, but it’s just another iheart afterthought. And that’s pretty much the local competition he’s had. The Sports Grind on 1380 has always been a San Antonio staple, but they are not going to talk UTEP or anything local.

I just can’t imagine Kap competing versus the hosts on the Ticket in Dallas or San Antonio - past or present.

AB moves the needle for me. It’ll be interesting to see his growth. Hell, give him his own show! The station doesn’t need more national programming hacks providing hot takes! Give me a non-westsider, puro El Pasoan that visits a carnecería for his cookout while listening to Mike Guerrero on Sundays, while helping the Ysleta JV baseball team fundraise for new equipment - to have his own show!

In the end, traditional sports radio will die off soon with all these podcasts. I’d listen to a Colin and Andy podcast if they had one.

Kap would absolutely be the lazy UTEP hire to replace Jon. It should be Tim Hagerty’s if he hasn’t already left.

Joe Golding Interview

So Joe Golding pretty much said who's the planned starting lineup I'm so many words. He also said they're looking for a 4 that can create his own shot and rebound. Seems to be ok with the shooters brought in and on the roster.

G- Devon Barnes
G- Corey Camper
G- David Terrell
G/F- Otis Frazier
C- Kevin Kalu

The only intrest I have is UTEP related, I rarely listen live and use the on demand recordings as I can forward through the show. Cade has future in broadcasting if and when he goes down that path.
Frank needs to take some ToastMaster classes, he talks to fast and his words jumble, he does know his stuff though. Zay also knows a lot about the sports world and could have a future in broadcasting as well.

KROD as a whole lags behind other "Professional" sports shows as far quality. One thing is the breaks in commercials before they finish or at times the hosts are cut off as they go into breaks...etc. I brought it up once but the response was "Hey things happen in broadcasting".

I have lived in the OKC area for 30 yrs now and the local radio sport stations are better at it.

That is all for now

SportsTalk with Steve Kaplowitz

Overall I enjoy the show when I listen. I think it's too long so it gets diluted a bit, but very informative at times.

As far as the Golding and players interviews I enjoyed them, but I would like to know info about detailed basketball stuff like how are Jones and Mbengue coming along? Will there be any adjustments on defense with the loss of Cox or our poor rim defense? What kind of coach is Golding trying to bring in next? What are the pros and cons of hedging and what might change or stay the same? How much does the team practice offense, shooting and free throws? Are those a focus and what has coach changed to improve those areas of deficiencies? How is the recruiting of the last player coming along?

I don't care about blowing smoke up the coaches and players asses and trying to hype the fans to the players.
Golding did at least answer the offense question in the Miner Talk pod cast. Seems like offense is going to be more a focal point this upcoming year.

SportsTalk with Steve Kaplowitz

Don't mind it when the talk sports, but they go off on to many personal conversations. What movies do they like, dinners etc.
Not a big baseball fan so I don't like when they bring the beer guy on, or the "Foss". Adrian is knowledgeable but I disagree with a lot of his opinions.
OT: I HATE WHEN THEY GO TO THE NEWS AND ITS YESTERDAYS OR LAST WEEKS. THAT HAPPENS ALL DAY LONG.

SportsTalk with Steve Kaplowitz

Steve is one of the very few, if any, media members that criticizes and questions UTEP athletics. He listens to us complain all of the time and he’s also a fan and agrees, while trying to maintain professionalism. I can definitely do without the same weekly guests like the fantasy sports guy especially during baseball season. Far too many commercials to fill up air time but I understand bills have to be paid but how much of the air time is actually sports talk? I would say 60/40.

SportsTalk with Steve Kaplowitz

I don’t agree. I rather be regular season conference champions than win 2/3 games in the conference tournament.
Result is the same, no NCAA or NIT. That tells you the type of slow fans UTEP has. Seeing the colorful, shiny object and thinking it’s great. Winning 2 games doesn’t erase the previous 31. If you win that magical 3rd game, different story.

Yes, I’m a nuggets fan and I agree. I absolutely hate watching the slowest player in the league slow the game down, continuously win basketball games, all these mvps, and a championship 🤦🏽‍♂️

Russell Westbrook would be a way more exciting player to watch and have. He’s fast, he’s quick, athletic, and can rebound as a guard so Jokic wouldn’t have to be in the there and slow the game down. Plus I wouldn’t have to waste my summer watching the nba playoffs 😂

I would take Durant's/Westbrooks OKC vs this Nuggets team.

SportsTalk with Steve Kaplowitz

Steve's a great guy and knows his stuff. Remember tho, sports talk is his side gig. He's the executive for advertising for krod/klaq. The thing that does bug me about his interviews is that he comes across as a butt kisser to everyone. And his "I love that" line is over used.
I used to listen daily because of afterwork commute. Now it's once a week.
I HATE when lane is on. Extremely annoying. I assumed they were trying to target a younger crowd, but the dad/grandpa thing makes more sense.

Joe Golding Interview

The guards could help with rebounding. The big man has been cut from basketball. NBA basically took it out of All Star game. To win in today's basketball is you need ball handlers, shooters and athletes. I think having a big man slows a team down. I think it's too late to improve Kalus offensive game.
