OT: SDSU to PAC12?

Some of you guys are delusional. The AAC has all of the Sun Belt to pick from before UTEP. UTEP isn’t joining the AAC, that ship has sailed.

Like I have said, the MWC is only taking UTEP if they lose a bunch of teams OR UTEP has a Gonzaga type basketball run of dominance and/or has Boise St type football run of dominance from 10-15 years ago. With the Gonzaga/Boise success being almost impossible to achieve.

So sit back and enjoy LaTech and MTSU while you can. It’s only going to get worse.
It took a minute for the reality of that to really sink in, but I’ve been saying that for a while now. This is a sinking ship. I have to admit, I am curious as to how long it can stay afloat with patch jobs. It’s to the point where its hardly worth getting frustrated over any more. Not completely, but mostly.

It’s a sinking ship for us being in an “attractive” conference. I still think UTEP can be competitive for conference titles in the near future. Of course, I don’t think Bronzeing and Dismel will accomplish that.

UTEP (and NMSU) have very little options because of location. Even the Pac 12 has a small pool of candidates to choose from. The other CUSA teams have chances to get Sun Belt and AAC invitations. UTEP and NMSU aren’t going to be considered for those spots, unless they have exceptional basketball and football performances.

UTEPs and CUSA’s future is with FCS move ups. Tarleton St, Eastern Kentucky, etc. That’s why we should “enjoy” being with LaTech, WKU, MTSU. Their replacements will be schools you would have laughed at 20 years ago.

Hell, Jacksonville St was D2 (not FCS) when the Miners made the Sweet 16. Now we’re conference mates.

Precisely.

Looks like they aren't going anywhere. There goes that.

LIke I said before, it was just political posturing on both sides. SDSU avoids paying the extra 17 million, and the MWC saved face by looking tough.

Now they’re stuck in the MW for at least 2 years or will need to pay $34 million to leave before that. Who knows how the western conferences will look by then.

Even with a Final 4/ Championship appearance. Pac 12 didn't want them? So the be competitive argument can be thrown out the window.

Nobody wants Boise State.
The only way up for them is the PAC and they don't have the academics for the PAC elites. Their market is also too small for the Big 12 or AAC.

If athletic success mattered, Charlotte and Rice would still be in CUSA and WKU would not have been left behind. Way more at play though.

One could assume that means SDSU adds little value to whatever tv deals PAC 12 is working on.
Right. You list "PAC 12 footprint" as a box to check, but what drives the current era of TV contracts is expanding the footprint. That's why the Big 10 added Buttgers and Merry Land, then added USC and UCLA.

Being in the PAC 12 footprint is not a positive.

Wouldn't it be better if SDSU placed a bid for Big Ten or Big 12?? SDSU, Cal and Arizona schools to the Big 12.

In that case. There’s plenty of top 15 tv markets available in the g5 world. SMU, Georgia St, USF, FIU should be waiting by the phone.

I'll start. No TV contract. SDSU wouldn't make the move without that security.
Allegedly the Pac 12 is unable to land a “suitable” deal for their conference. Leadership keeps pushing back their timetable on when it should get done.

SDSU does allow the P12 to “hang onto” the SoCal Market since USC/UCLA left, but it’s the same as CUSA claiming they still have the Houston market with Sam Houston now.

Not saying SDSU would actually bring eyeballs but they aren't making the move without knowing it's a better move financially.

Or another way to look at it is, PAC ain’t sending an invitation unless SDSU adds enough financial incentive to the tv deal. From the looks of it, nothing has been done.

You are right in a way SDSU is no comparable replacement to USC/UCLA but there is a little more to it. It is not exactly the same.

Sam Houston competes with Houston for the same market. SDSU does not compete with USD, or UCSD. Secondly, almost all of SDSU's football and basketball games are televised nationally already. Lastly, The Houston Cougars have always struggled for brand relevance within their home TV market, especially against Texas and Texas A&M. This Google Trends analysis of football teams from 2004-present shows that Houston has had roughly half the relevance of the Longhorns and the Aggies within the Houston media market, and even trail LSU by a good margin.

San Diego St is at least the top brand in their home market which, in 2022, was the 28th largest with 1.11M TV homes (though San Diego lost 25,290, or -2.3%, of their TV homes from 2021 to 2022). The Aztecs claim nearly 38% relative search interest in San Diego when compared to USC, UCLA, Notre Dame and BYU.

There are 1.1 million households being added to a market in a region where the Pac 12 really needs it. (it is a mid-size market) but it is a region that the Pac 12 really needs.

If you look at the Big 10, Maryland and Rutgers did not "own" their massive tv markets many think the media financial calculus has shifted away from total TVs/markets and more towards stronger brands and rivalries)

So, yes you are right SDSU is no comparable replacement, but they are the best fit for the PAC-12 and a no brainer addition. Yet, if the Media deal is not a great upgrade for them, they should not make the move as they still have a lot to offer the right partner, and that may be the MWC for the foreseeable future.

Yes, SDSU is a no brainer addition, because the choices are so limited. They are the best option by a wide margin.

You are right, that SDSU will make the decision that is best for them. They will not pay a huge exit fee to join a P12 receiving relative “peanuts” compared to other conferences. The P12 seems to be in a bad place. They need to get a good media contract soon.

Whatever media deal pac gets will be at least 4-6 times more than what the MW makes. Let’s be honest if only one western conference survives, who do you think it will be?

PAC has more prestige as well. I think (hope) both survive though.

It seems that no one in the PAC actually wants to be in the Big 12. Which might be disappointing for utep. Only way utep moves into the MWC is if it gets raided.

It’s just really dependent on the contract they get and how “crazy” any other conferences get.

If the P12 doesn’t get what they think they’re worth or whatever, the 4 Corners schools could go to the Big 12. Leaving the Washingtons, Oregons, and Cal/Stanford. Will the Big 10 take 2 of them? 4 of them?

Depending on who is left, they could then take the best of the MWC. If only Oregon St and Washington St are left, the MWC swallows them and the P12 is gone.

A lot has to happen, but it’s not totally unrealistic.

If the P12 gets a solid media deal, then yeah SDSU is gone, but if it’s barely more and Washington/Oregon are doing everything they can to leave, you might have 2nd thoughts about paying $17-34M to leave the MWC.
