I'm not an avid listener, and talking horse racing, or some gambling site bores me, but I get it, they need to be broad based so that's fine, just not for me.
The last 2 weeks all I hear relative to UTEP is NIL and how the game has changed. It sounds like they are talking about how the old model of recruiting has changed and now its all about NIL $, which I don't dispute and I don't think most listeners dispute either.
But then they start talking about Cooper Flagg having a high powered agent or how Donovan Dent is getting $2.3M at UCLA and its 4 times UTEP's NIL, or even that reserves at P4 schools are getting $300k. What does that have to do with anything at UTEP? As if UTEP is battling Jon Scheyer for recruits?
That's like me telling my wife we cant go to dinner because Jeff Bezos is having dinner in Ibiza, Spain; so its too expensive.
So NIL is hampering recruiting at UTEP? Then don't bring up Malachi Nelson or football having the top class in the conference last 2 years, because, well you know NIL money. Walden is just lucky I guess.
I recall last year them boasting that UTEP kept the nucleus of the team because of NIL, but now its really really hard because of NIL.
We are not losing Terrell, Bynum, Hamilton and Barnes to Kansas, UCLA, Auburn or Michigan - they are being pursued by Tarleton State, NJIT, UTSA and Indiana-Fort Wayne.
Mbengue will probably end up D2 or NAIA.
I don't expect to see UTEP compete with Purdue, Wake Forest, Colorado or BYU for recruits, but when I see guys committing to Western Kentucky, Wyoming, NMSU or Texas State - and not a whiff about any visits or commitments from UTEP while needing 10 more guys, then there's a major problem.
And that problem is not NIL - if Golding can't recruit in this new world, then he shouldn't be a Head Coach in this new world. I haven't heard Golding offer to return half his paycheck, so he likes the income, and competing for championships is the expectation? At least I thought Senter said it was.
