Let’s not even entertain the fact he would play for us.
The fact he paid a visit is absolutely insane and would’ve never happened before with any highly rated recruit.
Now if we can add some competent play calling behind it….😒
He has been a bust though. He committed to USC in 2021 and he couldn't get playing time at Boise St. Sounds like another Locksley.
This would be a massive get if we could land him. This would also open the door for other highly regarded players. Great players attract great players.
Last 5 star players to come to utep was Fred Rouse. That did not work out. I'd be interested to know why he hasn't succeeded thus far (especially at Boise).
Worked out well for Tyler Ebell. I remember a game where Rouse went off and looked unguardable. Unfortunately he was an idiot
Several months ago I read an article where people related what happened to their high school valedictorian. In some cases the valedictorians went on to become very successful. Some were complete busts. The valedictorian title meant something in high school, meant something when applying to colleges, but after getting into college it was what they did there that counted.
The same goes for 5 star athletes. Those stars have given Nelson his opportunities. He has yet to do anything with those opportunities so far. Hopefully for him he was just in the wrong situations at USC and Boise State, and at his next stop he will finally show the promise people saw in him. Or maybe he just peaked early. Only time will tell.

Boise has a really good QB right now. Last season USC had the Heisman trophy winner. Let’s cut him some slack
Like I said maybe it's just that he hasn't been in the right situation yet. We'll see at his next stop.
Scotty needs to be careful here and make sure he gets the right guy at QB. It will likely make or break his opportunity..
I think we have a decent chance at landing him. Nelson’s best strategy is to find a school that offers him a good chance of starting next season so he can showcase his talents and show his arm is healed and he can make throws. If all goes well, he puts his name in the transfer portal and upgrades to a better program. UTEP’s is weak at the QB position and will offer him a good chance at starting next season.

If Nelson joins the Miners and he’s as good as he’s touted, then he will be our starting QB. If he’s looking to make an impact on a team, this will be his golden opportunity. This would be a game changer for this program.

Ebell was the top RB in California and Thomas in Arizona. Both stud transfers that the great Mike Price gave us
He doesn't even need to be great. If he's good or even above average he'll be serviceable for us. In USC he was competing with other 4 and 5 star guys for PT. At Boise, he was competing for high 3 star and and low 4 star guys for PT. Here he probably doesn't have a lot of competition. Our QB play wasn't amazing this year.
At USC Nelson was competing against Caleb Williams, who was one of the top QBs in college football. Nelson did get beat out by a 3 star QB at BSU. Not sure how it unfolded. Again, let’s wait and see if Nelson ends up at UTEP before we start projecting next year’s QB.
Who cares if Caleb Williams or if Bo Nix was the better QB. What does that have to do with UTEP. Coach Walden is just trying to recruit Nelson to come to UTEP.
