Does UTEP athletics survive?

Right now all the new AAC members will see an increase. Let's wait a few years until it's time to renegotiate tv deals. ESPN has a major control of the market and is eliminating all competition. Fox and CBS Sports need to be serious about lower level college football or ESPN can come and offer the AAC a 20 million a year deal. At that point it's pretty much take it or leave it. ESPN is playing the long game.

This doesn't necessarily have any direct connection to today's situation, but at the rate UTSA is going they'll be entertaining an invite from The Big 12 before you know it. That'll change the landscape again.

I hope UTEP's athletics survive over the long haul but we just missed the one situation that likely would have put them into the MWC. I was hoping the AAC attempt to poach 4 from the MWC would work leaving 4 spots to fill. The obvious replacements would have been the 3 Texas schools that just went to the AAC and UTEP.

Now it's starting to look like UTEP will be playing football vs teams similar to our independent days prior to joining the WAC. But I'd rather have that then just quitting altogether. We still need a serious athletic department plan with the object being a national brand. Something achieved by Boise St, App St, schools that are not in the middle of huge metro areas.

Boise has growth going for them. While not a true metro a lot of tech industry (Micron for one does chip making, same chips there’s a global shortage of) startups and movement from CA. This also includes airport expansion from the physical airport to Alaska adding flights

Remember when we on this site thought ECU was going to for sure become that next mid-major to go P5 as then HC Skip Holtz was turning them into a mid major power and taking on UNC and NC State for recruits? Fresno State prior to that? BYU even prior to that? And then all to discover BAM! Utah gets a then PAC 10 invite. TCU gets a Big XII invite after getting snubbed years prior. No one thought the AAC would take Tulsa but perhaps Rice for their market?

No one one here knows what will happen because things can change dramatically in 2-3 years. Holtz left ECU and that ended that east coast romance. Memphis is not the same since Cal left. Hardaway is helluva recruiter but they not seriously challenging top teams, that now belongs to the PAC XII who has quietly put itself back on top conference status in basketball.

Settle down, buy tickets for next week and cheer on the players who chose El Paso as home and show Dimel we demand a conference title.

…..and yet no P5 conference takes Boise. Ugh!

I’m with you on this, 2step. I’ve posted maybe 2-3 times on conference realignment. I’m of the “we have no idea how this will unfold before all is said and done” camp.

However, I’m enjoying reading all the speculation. There has been some what I would consider grasping at straws predictions and what I would consider some logical prognostications, and I’ve come to the conclusion that any of them COULD happen.

Plus it’s a bye week, conference realignment is big news. What else are people gonna talk about?
