If Utep loses to Kennesaw State...

I liked what I saw from Pickles. Walden needs to trust him more to air it out, his high school stats were better than Shay’s.
Yeah me too. Gotta wonder why SW was SO conservative with him in though. At this point Walden has nothing to lose, however he sure called it up like he does. Is he “protecting” his young QB or can he just not throw the ball ala Locksley?

I don’t see why Locklear is being viewed as the key to finishing strong. He’s had the entire season to prove himself, and honestly, the numbers speak for themselves. It’s time to give the freshman quarterbacks a shot, our best chance to win might be sitting on the bench.
Simply put, because we saw the difference once Pickles was put in against La Tech. Pickles present no threat of pass at the very least.

Does Pickles call the plays too? Locklear has a qb rating of 16. That’s gotta be an all time low for UTEP even by our own standards.

I’m not a Locklear fan boy, but he beat FIU and at least gives the threat of the pass enough where Utep was effective running against La Tech. They absolutely would’ve had a chance if he’s not knocked out with a cheap shot! Yes it’s possible to set up a game plan for Pockles to possibly throw more, but his high school tape doesn’t change the fact that he’s a true freshman with 0 FBS experience.

FIU beat themselves and I’m sure they’re thinking the same thing. Without losing our qbs we beat UTEP. Prior to coming to UTEP and getting to start Locklear was in the same boat as Pickles. Zero FBS experience and only 4 completions at the FCS level.

There was a play I vividly remembered the last game. Locklear was in shotgun and as soon as he received the ball he threw the ball sidearm from his hip to the sideline WR screen and the DB was still on top of the receiver for a loss. Mando Medina even saw and commented on this. Too small, weak arm and not a D1 guy.

I generally agree, however, Locklear is trusted enough to throw. His deep ball is, at least, a little threatening. Pickles is a fullback that isn't trusted to throw.

As I see it
With Locklear at QB
M. Tennessee 50/50
Kennesaw St. 80/20
Tenn. 0/100
NMSU 40/60

With Pickles at QB
M. Tennessee 35/65
Kennesaw St. 65/35
Tenn. 0/100
NMSU 25/75

Pickles has quick feet and can run hard. Seems to be somewhat of gunslinger but that can be channeled into more productive efforts.
Future looks look. I believe Pickles will be starting the next four games.

Yeah as I told Corona based on what small sample size we saw Locklear gives us a better chance of wining 3 or 4 games this year.
Thats just your opinion. Locklear has had his chance to show anything. Aside from that one completion to Thomas he couldn’t move the ball much either. I want to see Pickles with the same amount of passing attempts as Locklear had.

As I said based on what limited play we saw. Haven’t seen Pickles throw really.

Pickles didn't get a chance to pass much, but when Scotty finally relented out of necessity, what i saw did not look good. Locklear has not played well at all this season, but based on the very small sample size I've seen from Pickles, Pickles is the better runner, Locklear is the better passer (which is sad). I do think that Locklear gives us a better chance to win, which isn't saying much. Hopefully Pickles comes out and looks spectacular on Saturday and makes me eat my words, but I'm not holding my breath.

I know it was only the spring game, but I did like some things I saw in Pickles. Maybe more real game time experience will help, but I would love to see "if" Shay can play.

Pickles family went on Twitter/X after last week's game stating that's all he did in high school which explains his recruitment for CS RPO.

However, you have to be able to throw a decent contolled ball at the FBS level. I say controlled because we saw two opposite ends of the spectrum under Dimel with Locksley and Hardison. One was often off target and the other threw a 100 mph fast ball on a dink and dunk pass.

Curious to what they meant by that’s all he did? Cuz the boy threw for close to 10k yards in high school. Locklear on the other hand threw for 7k yards. I put all the blame on Walden’s play calling.

That is not what I saw on X. They were saying he could throw the ball. Now, of course, what else would his family say?

And he most likely can, given the chance. His high school stats outperform any quarterback on our roster. People are quick to judge him based on just two attempts, not taking into consideration he was thrown into the fire.

Ok. My bad.

UTEP needs to have higher standards now. This low standards and too much patience is what got Utep in trouble. If anything the pressure to win will probably come from the Mountain West? Walden I think will need to go after a transfer QB next season.

I think getting in the MWC probably bought him some time. (Senter)
It shouldn’t buy him any time. UTEP got into the MW because of pure desperation. The athletics program has been abysmal under his leadership in a weak ass conference. He did nothing in CUSA and how can anyone have any confidence in him that he is going to be competitive in a much more competitive conference. He needs to be fired before we join the MW. His poor performance speaks for itself.

Utep will never be a school that fires a coach after the 1st year, Period! So just let it go
