Is the Battle of I-10 in trouble?

I wouldn’t worry about it or Title IX like AB asked about earlier. 2020 is not a normal year. The NCAA will be flexible with things like this.

Not so sure about that. Back in April the Group of 5 conference commissioners sent a letter to the ncaa asking for relief from certain regulations because of the virus issues and the ncaa declined to allow even the temporary dropping of sports.

That was then, lots has happened since April 5. I seriously doubt the NCAA is going to be kicking schools to D2 or NAIA because of the corona virus. That’s just me.

“I think not having the money from those two games would be a potential knock-out blow,” said NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia. “That’s 2.75 million dollars, there’s no remedy for that, no cuts for that, there’s no trimming for that. we’re at the minimum for sports so it’s a pretty serious scenario if those games aren’t played.”

That’s what he said, however without context of the entire conversation, we do not know if he’s referring to the football program as a whole or just this athletic year. “Potential knock-out blow” for what? You and I can speculate, but without context, could mean several things.

Boxers and MMA fighters receive knock-out blows all the time. It doesn’t mean they’re dead.

The evidence for NMSU possibly losing FBS status or at least the threat of that happening, is in UTEP2STEPs earlier posts in this thread. The NMSU AD says in the article:

“I think not having the money from those two games would be a potential knock-out blow,” said NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia. “That’s 2.75 million dollars, there’s no remedy for that, no cuts for that, there’s no trimming for that. we’re at the minimum for sports so it’s a pretty serious scenario if those games aren’t played.”

Add to that the slashing of state money to UNM and NMSU and you can see that merely replacing those games with the likes of UMass and UConn would not come close to making up the monetary loss.
NMSU and most mid majors this year....
