The NCAA announced May 1 that it was putting UTEP on probation for five years because of a lack of institutional control and what were characterized as minor but rampant transgressions of NCAA regulations.
The committee said it did not find a pattern of major violations in the case. However, according to the committee, the violations show that the university and Coach Don Haskins have lacked control over the basketball program.

The late Paul Strelzin talked about it openly when he had his radio show. A former pg went to him needing shoes. Strelzin bought him a pair. According to street talk rumor back then the Haskins recruit ride was instigated by a disgruntled school who convinced the recruit to make an official complaint. Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m trying to remember what happened decades ago.
He worked with Chris Jans at Wichita State and also was an assistant at LSU. I think they wanted somebody with the same philosophy.
