I've been saying that Utep will have a new QB competing for the starting job next year and I feel that has just been confirmed. Kugler has spoken with Father of Louisville Transfer QB Will Gardner who will be eligible after he graduates next week. Now the thing is, I heard this through someone and it may or may not be true and I don't know if we have a chance at this kid. However the rumor of this tells me Kugler is looking for a QB with experience to come in next year... like I've been saying

Not saying he'll be the guy, he very well may not be, but Kugler is looking

And once again, what about Kavika? Something tells me Kugler is going with a whole new offensive set. He can't go spread, that's against his nature. Pro-Set?

So Gardner is a "redshirt junior" who will graduate Dec 18 and will not have to sit out. If he is a redshirt junior, Kug would have him for 2 years if he decides to come here? Right?

That would be a nice pick up for the short term. I'm guessing that means they'll be more passing next season. Even if Kug's doesn't get him, finding a plug and play QB should be his top priority.

Before his injury he did very well last year. He's obviously injury prone though. Right now W. Kentucky is vying for his services as well!

That's a good question. His style was already pro-style, so I'm wondering what direction he has in mind. Again, I think if he wants Jones to be his work horse (which he shouldn't be) he'd be better served going to a spread or pistol set up. I don't think Kavika is a bad option in that offense, but of course there may be some accuracy questions with his passing. We'll definitely know a lot more after some hires are announced.

I'd love to know who he's targeting. I'm probably more excited at the possibilities than I ever was before.

You mean like you and everybody else who knows the difference between a B gap and a C cup has been saying...

Year 4 should be a breakout year for any program, Kugler SHOULD have groomed at least two legit, combat-ready, potential difference-makers at QB going into spring. Like manna from heaven, Showers fell into his lap in year 1 which SHOULD have provided 2+ years to recruit and develop players/depth at the most important position on the football field. Instead you're looking at recruiting Nick Lamaison 2.0 for the next 1-2 seasons.

Strategic planning is your friend...

Here's my thought - and it just based on the rumors.
If Kugler is looking for a transfer QB or any type of QB other than a freshman, then the conclusion I leap to is that he and his staff cannot develop a QB.

Maybe he should just have Aaron Jones switch to QB and eliminate the handoff. We can get in more plays that way.

The Jones brothers should play both ways since they're are best athletes just recruit blockers and let them run the show lol I kid of course

hard to do that when you're playing politics and running players off. But I agree with you totally. That lack of development burns deep.

I guess it's safe to say Higgins was no where close to being a QB coach. You can't have a program today and not have an OC with some QB experience or a QB coach that moonlights as a WR or RB coach. Their failure to identify, much less develop QBs in their system is another reason (of many) why Kugler needed to make the change. Hopefully he'll get one now.

Man you hit that nail on the head. Kugler is not a stupid man and he knew what he was getting into. NFL wants their assistants to cut their teeth at the D1 head coaching level when opportunity presents itself. It's a measuring stick for them. So if he doesn't make it here, he'll be welcomed back with open arms in the NFL. Only problem, is fans and next coaching staff will have to put up with and clean up his "dumpster fire" if things don't pan out.

I think we are seeing the evolution of Kugler. I dont think hes married to the pro style offense. He hasnt recruited a pro style qb. I think hes had his gary patterson come to Jesus moment. Im excited about next year.

LOL. I hope he did have his come to Jesus moment. This season had to have been not only an eye opener in how he and his staff do (or did) business, but also a gut check to him personally. He's probably supremely motivated now. Like you, I'm excited for next season.

I think he should hire the OC first, and let the OC bring the qb's he needs run his system.
