La Tech, game #2

In 2003-04, BCG's 2nd year, we were 9th in the nation in FT percentage at 75.2%. The following year (Sadler's first) we were 1st in the nation at 79.2%. I realized then that our stellar FT shooting helped us win several games, but never took the time to quantify it. This year it's easy to quantify how many games we have lost thanks to our pathetic FT shooting. We are currently 8-7, riding a four game losing streak. If we could hit our FTs we'd be 12-3, 4-0 in conference, riding a six game winning streak. It is so frustrating to watch this team throw away games with historically bad FT shooting.

I agree Maniac. I will add that the turnovers also have played a big part in the losses. I picked on Givance for his issues in the previous 3 losses (he also had 4 this game); but against La Tech, Solomon had 7 turnovers. I emphasize this because many of the turnovers were completely unnecessary; just a lack of valuing the ball, trying to do too much and not playing smart.

The 14 first half turnovers, after a full week to work on La Tech is not a great outcome against a team that really doesn't pressure the ball. The margin for victory is razor thin, and cutting down the turnovers is the most attainable through coaching/sitting down certain players in my opinion.

Bs. We were one big man away from being great immediately. Who knows what the team would look like this season had we won a conference title and or made the NCAAT. Could have been the start of a lucky snowball.

Golding is indeed a program builder. It took him 7 years before the wins piled on at ACU. There are justified reasons for the time it took but it is worth noting it

It's going to be unique having a coach that's able to retain his players for 3/4+ years. Does that method still work in this new era of instant transfers and NIL deals? I guess we'll find out sooner or later.

Yeah the idea of a program builder is dead now with NIL and a crazy transfer portal. He won't keep players long enough to build a program... he needs to recruit better and bring the teams together quickly. And coach them up.

Or go find someone else who can do that. Because it's happening across all mid majors now.

The days of the dominant big man are long gone. Everyone and their mother are looking for the next unicorn, a 7 footer that can handle the ball and shoot 3s.
Shows how good Terry's recruiting is. He was able to land one and make him sit out a year before playing. Golding couldn't land anything from the portal with the advantage of having an immediate starting role available for such a player.

Partly true, but as it stands UTEP will never get that type. Golding needs more of a Vince Hunter type. I thought Z might progress to that, but he's just not as quick.
