Local media that best covers UTEP sports?

They are all pretty lame, but UTEP really hasn't given them much to cover. Channel 9 appears to be the best. Actually, I am wrong....Steve over at sportstalk is easily the best.

2 things to remember these days.

Our local tv stations are being used as stepping stones for reporters. Once the older guys retire or whatnot, they are replaced by out of towners who will only be here a short time and really have no idea how much we want UTEP info. They see other stories as more important.

Whether you like it or not Cruces IS part of the TV stations market. Therefore they NEED to cover NMSU to drive ratings (and ad revenue) in Cruces. Not that I want to see NMSU crap, and I do believe the coverage should be more UTEP heavy, but I do understand what they are trying to do.

As for dropping NMSU, well that's just a dumb idea best suited for debate in a different thread some day...

KFOX and CBS4. Yes, people complain about Lou, but unlike the aforementioned reporters using El Paso as a stepping stone he has been in this city for many years and doesn't appear to be going anywhere. I was very happy when he came back a few years ago

I can’t name one.

TV loves covering Aaron Jones, H.S. football and NMSU (especially ABC 7).

I really don't give a crap about the local news anymore. Insult El Paso, El Paso Proud, whatever. All get their butts handed to them by their Spanish counterparts and for good reason.

Do you guys remember Paul Cicala? Well, I'm going to put this oldie but a goodie of a video clip of one of his Wildcat reporting spots not long after he left El Paso.

I agree with UTEPfan 1966 that it's Steve Kaplowitz followed by Andy Morgan.

As far as KVIA covering NMSU, I don't think anyone is disputing that local media should not cover them but KVIA takes it overboard more times than not. KVIA usually leads with NMSU stories during their sports portion rather than UTEP. UTEP is the larger segment of the market and should be treated as such.

Although it seems that it's being kept quiet; the Miner men are apparently playing a scrimmage against Grand Canyon tomorrow. Hope there is some kind of coverage from any one of the media.

Is the scrimmage open to the public? I know it can't be advertised but is there some way to get in? Anyone with inside info.

I believe the NCAA mandates non charity scrimmages be closed door. I dont think there will be any media there or allowed.

I watch all 3 channels and I have to say ch. 4 is the worst. Lou is more about being a comedian than covering sports. During the chihuahua season, he rarely shows highlights and just posts the score instead. Then when I watch the other stations, “oh the Miner volleyball team played today, oh and the Miner soccer team played as well,” with highlights to boot. The only thing that bothers me the most about ch 7 is their coverage of UT football. They’ll actually send a crew out there as if the majority of El Paso cared, it’s embarrassing and cringe when they’re “reporting live from Royal stadium.”

Has anyone reported on our Quarterback situation. Metz? Why didn't Locks play saturday? I haven't seen anything posted.

Same reason I tell people when they ask why UTEP doesn't give scholarships to more local players. Sometimes those people aren't as qualified or they don't apply at all

That's not the same thing. How hard can it be to be a sports anchor?? You don't need no skills. It's just like a weather girl. They hire people who look good on TV.

Why cant the news stations hire ex Utep athletes?? Give Q demps a job,to cover the football team. Randy Culpeper lives in the city. Maybe when he retires from Basketball, give him a job.

It doesn't pay that much.

He's not wrong. Monica Cortez was a low rank reporter who slipped into the morning weather job. ZERO experience asides from being a pretty face. Chuck slipped up and they moved an inexperienced young pretty girl into his spot. She flirts with the camera but by no means is a meteorologist. Don't get me wrong though, I like Colin and Nate. They do a good job.

I also think they do a good job. But I would like to see locals or ex Utep players get those positions. Maybe hire a local qualified comedian to do sports??

That’s exactly what I’m saying!
