Joe Golding is the first to admit the 2024-2025 season at UTEP fell short of expectations, and he is looking to make changes. With an ever-changing landscape in college basketball that includes agents, NIL deals, multiple transfers, and conference realignment, he knows the job is not easy. But he knows he’s up for the challenge.
I sat down with the unexpectedly reserved coach for a wide-ranging interview.
Q: You talked about making changes after the season ended, can you explain what you meant by that?
A: No, I’m good.
Q: Okay, last year you had “10:33” printed on t-shirts, what do you think will be the motto for next year?
A: Well, I’m big on that, so we will get the guys long sleeve shirts that say, “Don’t miss breakaway dunks”, “tough times pass tough people last”, “Nothing happens in a straight line”, “I do best under pressure”, and “That’s on me”. I hope they all fit!
Q: You have a large number of roster spots to fill, how are you going about filling a roster?
A: We’ve got plenty of time for that, there will be a ton of guys who don’t sign or commit in April and May that will be available late in the summer, even into August, so not concerned one bit. Guys want to compete and I’m sure I can find guys who play hard, I will always sign a 5-11 145 pound kid who tries hard vs a guy who scored 18 points a game at a mid-major. I’ll play a walk-on over a scholarship guy anytime, I’ve done it and I’ll do it again.
Q: You talked about breaking records, what do you mean?
A: Well, remember Billy Gillispie went 6-24 several years ago, we think we can max out at 5 wins, we don’t want a tie, we want the record. Think about it, Coach Gillispie went on to A&M and Kentucky and Texas Tech, so I think I can set myself up for a better job if we show the nation we are a record-breaking team.
Q: You have 3 coaching vacancies, anyone you are talking to?
A: Wait, what? Who left?
Q: Your boss, Jim Senter, gave you a vote of confidence at the end of the season, what did that do for you?
A: Between us, that guy has no clue. We’re off the record, right.
Q: Regarding NIL, how much do you have budgeted and willing to spend?
A: Like I said, I’m big on idioms over results, so I say “The best way to save is by not spending”, so that’s what we are doing at UTEP.
Q: You are notorious for avoiding social media, while the football coach embraces it, what’s your philosophy on social media?
A: Fans don’t sign my checks, only Jim Senter signs them, so that’s all that matters.
Q: Your record at UTEP in conference games is lower than .500, how do you improve on that?
A: Winners never quit, and quitters never win.
Q: More specifically, anything you will change in your approach and style?
A: The best way out is always through
