I miss the NBA All-Star games from the 80s and early 90s. The players cared back then. Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas used to try out do each other, the teams would play to win, and it had the feel of the ultimate pickup game. I remember one tight game where Kevin Johnson put up a last second, potential game winning shot, but Karl Malone tipped it in while it was still on the rim and was called for goal tending. It looked like it would have probably gone in anyway. Johnson was so upset that Malone touched it, the West was bummed at the loss, the East celebrated the win. These days players attack the basket un-molested, are left wide open for 3s, and it looks like a second slam dunk and second three point shooting contest. No matter what they try to do differently, it won't matter unless the players play to win.
