NMSU cancels fall football.... may play in spring

Yeah, I forgot that the MAC cancelled their season. I’m sure UTEP is high on their list. Clemson and Notre Dame are surely in a UTEP bidding war!!!!!!
No one said that. But you said ND and Clemson had their schedules full. Which they don’t. You’re on a roll of misinformation today.

Yeap, I was wrong. All hail JCorona for his relentlessness. Bravo!
Don’t respond to my comments if you don’t want to be exposed.

I feel I made a reasonable statement by saying Senter should be on the phone with any P5 that has vacancies. You want to prove me wrong and you end up looking like a dumba$$.

Yeah dude totally!!!!!!!!!!

I want a raise after my company said there will be no raises this year!!! I want a raise no matter what!!!

I wonder how that would go over?

BC and Pitt have an open non-conference opponent on 9/12. Oh, we’re scheduled with Texas, so those 2 are out.

Clemson has an open date for 9/19. So Clemson is UTEPs only shot at scheduling an ACC team this year. I’m really sure they’re going to schedule a team from a COVID hotspot the week after they played at UT.

Those are the only 3 ACC teams with an opening on their schedules. Not happening. You can believe in unicorns and Jurassic park, I look at the facts.
Clemson on 9/19 would be a week after their game with WF and 2 weeks before their next game so would be a possibility. Talk about throwing the Miners to the wolves. 9/12 at Texas and the next Saturday at Clemson? That's cruel and unusual punishment. Profitable though.

UTEP should go for it. Doubt it happens. Even further doubt it would be played.

Sometimes its a sellers market and sometimes its a buyers market. What's the market right now? I don't know.......these games are set up years in advanced and now the teams that are playing are all scrambling.

The P5 teams remaining want cupcakes, The G5 teams want paydays. Are there more P5 teams with openings or more G5 teams wanting paydays? That determines the market.

The status quo for UTEP is so bad that they should play this out until the bitter end.....

Even the worst of scenarios have winners.....UTEP should try to be one of those. It's like a gambler who's all in....you have no choice but to play it to the end.

But if there are no fans, whats the budget for paying opponents?

Can individual teams inside of conferences do their own thing in 2020? For example, lets say Nebraska wants to play despite what the Big 10 says. I can see some of the non-California PAC-12 teams doing the same.
No. That's like selling a Big Mac at Burger King.

I think, certainly don't know, that there will be some fans. Maybe as much as 25% of the Sun Bowl capacity. About 12,000. If they allowed that and managed to get season ticket holders plus x number of others in at $20 per attendee, that would likely pay for a low level opponent like ULM or Texas St. Nothing against those 2, they are probably competing against UTEP for paydays that might be left but some will not get those paydays. UTEP is very fortunate to have the game at Texas.

Exactly. What real benefit does UTEP get if they pay Lamar $100,000 to come play a game? It’s not on TV and there won’t be any fans to offset the cost of the $100,000.
Probably some fans. You can spread 10-12k fans out in the Sun Bowl very well for social distancing. Unfortunately, we know this from recent experience.

I don’t think any SB/CUSA teams are buying each other. Could schedule a h/a. Texas St is a team I’ve wanted on UTEP’s schedule.

$100,000 was a lowball number I sent, that a SLC team might take. Do you think it would wise of UTEP to pay 6 figures for a “meaningless win”, with no guarantee of revenue or how the long-term effects of the pandemic will change the athletic department?
I don’t. IMO if we can’t get a payday game then we should just skip it. Not worth it. Not to mention I’m not sure we can beat Lamar.

Well the money is on TV. TV is starved for content and stuff that's on is drawing big numbers. UTEP shouldn't pay anyone, UTEP should get paid to go out there and give some power schools an easy win/scrimmage.

More like an individual franchisee doing their own thing from the larger chain. Like how there's still one blockbuster in Alaska or one Silverstreak still in Fabens or Clint. It does happen to a point. It's complicated stuff, but how much sovereignty does each school have outside of the conference? I'm betting a school will test that theory this year.

I know Texas's ability to do its own thing angered Big 12 schools to the point that Nebraska, Colorado, and A&M left.

My prediction is 20-40 D1 Teams will play this year. Some programs are too big and the political leadership in those places won't get in their way.

No way Alabama doesn't play this year. Half the team can have Covid, they're playing.

My guess is some type of ad-hoc season where everyone is a kind of "independent".

Maybe even like 4-8 team playoff at the end to "legitimize" the season.

Some poster said most of the cancellations are about liability. Schools don't want to be responsible for covid bills, etc. I think some schools won't care.

But this guess is mostly a gut feeling. Nothing based on research or anything.
And if some conferences play in the spring instead, will they have their own playoff? Is there going to be a playoff for the fall season and a playoff for the spring season? Will there be two national champions, a fall champion and a spring champion?

The Rose Bowl will be the spring championship game.

Serious question.

Will NMSU be able to put a football schedule together in spring?

If the P2 & G2 only allow one or two ooc games how will they fill it up?

There’s not many pay days available in the fall but I think they would find it easier to find games. There’s still a lot of CUSA/SB teams looking for games. Both conferences don’t have a restriction on the amount of ooc games.

What happens if they don’t play football in 2020? Is that enough damage to end their FBS dreams?

The “spring season” is likely to be an abbreviated one, so we can get back to normal in fall 2021. They’ll get at least 5 or 6 games

Pac 12 team looking for a warmup
UNM
H/H vs UMass & UConn

It doesn’t look very promising though. My guess is they caved to state politics.

I was under the impression UConn canceled football all together for 2020. Umass hasn’t committed to playing in the spring.

I really don’t know. If they say they cancelled for 2020, could just mean until 12/31/20. I don’t think I have seen a school/conference saying they’re out until Sept 2021 though. I am assuming that anyone who isn’t playing in the fall, will attempt in the spring, as of now.

UConn said exactly that. They’re out until the 2021 season. UCONN is not a game that NMSU can schedule in the spring.

Alright then. Doesn’t look good for NMSU in the spring. We can only speculate if it ends up even being an issue. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s no college football until Sept 2021

I’m thinking if the fall season is cut short there won’t be a spring season. IMO if they wanted to attempt to play some games, the fall would have been their best chance.

Who knows. It’s so ****in political. I just don’t see how they cram football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and everything else all into the spring.

Waiting for news on NMSU football budget wise speaking.

Let's put it this way, the NMSU system let go of faculty throughout their system. This is not looking good for NMSU FB right now and saving FBS status by sacrificing faculty and staff will cause uproar and a fight with Santa Fe.
