A Tex-Mex chain, from all places Austin, where they look down upon us, is looking to find their niche in the Mexican food capital of the US. Paaaalease! I'm all for new things coming in to EP but a trendy Tex-Mex restaurant from East Texas is not one of them. I'll be damned if I'll give my money to those SOB's and most El Pasoans feel the same way. It's getting blasted on social media. I didn't bother to post a link cuz I know our boy EPChih will be on top of it.

Ha, there use to be a Chuys here in Phx, not sure if it was the same chain, until ICE raided them. Restaurants are always packed in El Chuco so I'm sure people will still go. They should have opened a Torchy's Tacos(from Austin) instead

I was thinking the same thing.
I am not planning on setting a foot in that place....

I'll be there. I loved the food.

Do others look down El Paso, hell yes. But didn't we put down Memphis constantly for their high crime rate when Memphis was in CUSA. I know I did.

Tex-Mex and Mexican food are not the same thing. Chuy's doesnt market themselves as authentic Mexican. Many people in the country do confuse tex-mex and Mexican food. The sports writer from the oklahoman after visiting el paso for the ou game wrote the Mexican food in el paso wasnt as good as the Mexican food in okc. He was obviously confusing tex mex with mexican food. The menu offerings at chuy's are different than mexican resturaunts and vice versa. There arent many tex-mex resturaunts in el paso so Chuy's may fill a void.

Btw, Austin is not in east texas.

Hey rookie...

Since you're new and all, let me explain something about this board. During the offseason, when there is rarely any UTEP related news, there will be plenty of posts not related to UTEP to take up the time... so get used to it. I don't know if you have noticed but when there is a topic not related to UTEP sports we put an OT in front to inform the finicky reader it is OFF TOPIC as not to waste their precious time. Now that you've wasted my time responding to your kind, let me ask you this...why did you read it and more importantly respond to it?

GO USA!

Re: Hey rookie...

Lived in Austin for a while...Chuy's is good! Not L&J good but good. Especially for breakfast. People need to open their minds a bit...cheeeez.

Austin is Central Texas.

And I love me some Chuys. And if it gives people some jobs, I'm all for it.

Now if we can just get Chico's to stop with Austin hate and set up one on South Congress. I'll be all over it like white on rice.

Jam master whatever your name is, First 4 years isn't new to this board is it? Second what is my kind? That sounded Racist and ignorant! You chose to make a long winded pointless response, you wasted your own time, I think on my kind of people lol What a Douche

Wow, we've got some sticklers for details on here don't we. I know Austin is central Texas, I just consider anywhere east of Midland and Odessa East Texas...just how I am. Never been to one, but I'm hearing a lot of terrible things about it, the food especially, but I'm also reading it's mostly about the atmosphere and the drinks...well hell, we got Carlos & Mickey's for that and it's local too. I guess what I would hate to see is out of town guests drop by Chuy's to see what all the hype is about EL Paso's mexican food and go away disappointed. Our local flavor is slowly being polluted, we've been infiltrated!

GO USA!

Whoaa!

Racist, really lol, where the hell did you get that from, I don't even know what you are, black, Indian or Samoan...smh. How am I a douche, you responded to my post with a smart ass post about this being a UTEP sports only board, I just responded with the appropriate rebuttal, a kind one at that and you call me a douche. Look, just admit your original response to my post was just to be a tool and a smart ass and we'll walk away unharmed. I don't want this to turn into an EPChi type pissing contest.

GO USA!

Ok Sorry Jam Bad Day, I Love You!
Go USA and I Hate Chuy's Sad Excuse For Mexican Food!

When we moved the family to San Antonio we had no idea what Tex/Mex was. Soon found out and were extremely disappointed. We searched and searched for authentic Mexican food to no avail. Soon before moving back to El Paso, a Chuy's opened near our house. We tried it. The Southwestern Enchilada Plate is as close to anything on that menu to a Mexican style meal we ever got anywhere in San Antonio. They're served stacked style (blue tortillas, beware) and come with cheese, and Hatch green chili sauce, and an egg on top. They were good enough that if we decide to go when they open here, that's what I'll be having. I would not try anything else on that menu. Pretty good nachos too and sopapillas. I think it'll do okay with folks that live in this area that grew up on Tex/Mex, but like someone else said, hope the tourists don't go away thinking that this is Mexican food.

I find it utterly hilarious how El Pasoans rip any Mexican or Tex-Mex places when so many ppl here flock to Chico's. That garbage makes Taco Bell look like Morton's.

Moved to Dallas from EP in '77. Our dining experiences suffered a major set-back. Still trying to adjust. There is absolutely nothing here other than Tex-Mex. We have, however consented to go with friends to some of Dallas' finer Tex-Mex establishments, but you just have to settle with the fact that you are not eating Mexican. You are eating "something else" which; depending on what you order might be pretty good...it's just not what you are expecting if you are coming from EP. My main complaints are:
1. Taco shells out of a box
2. Chili con carne on everything
3. It's common to not even have an option for a taco in a corn
tortilla.
4. We used to call it a burrito if it was wrapped in a flour
tortilla. They call it a "soft" taco.
5. I accepted an offer for some sopapillas a few years back
remembering the good ole days and was presented with two
"egg sized", hard as a rock ones wrapped in cellophane and
was charged $2.75.
If I feel compelled to eat Mexican over here I'll probably go
to Taco Cabana.

I was in Abilene for 4 years and I occasionally like some tex-mex. A big Chimichanga smothered in Cheese Sauce. Or Carne Guisada burritos. I've never heard of Chuy's, but I liked Abuelos. There is a couple Tex-Mex local places in Dallas my sister takes me too, and it is what it is. Its not what we have, but its not really Mexican Food either.

I am sure when they come down here for Pit BBQ, they are extremely dissapointed. We have good BBQ places, but it isn't what they have in East Texas. Kinda of the same thing.

I love El Paso's Mexican food. My experience has been that if you get 100 miles from El Paso, the Mexican food goes to shit, quick. I mean, Duke City Mexican food sucks stale ass.
Having said that, I was in Port Orchard, Washington and my daughter wanted to take me to their "Mexican" restaurant. At first glance I thought I was basically getting food truck food. I was very wrong! The food was very different from what I was used to, but it was from a different region of Mexico (Monterey, perhaps) and looked different from anything you would see in El Paso. I bring this up because I think many of us are so spoiled by the food in El Paso, that we sometimes don't even give another type of Mexican food a chance.
Don't get me wrong, the number three combo at Avila's is a regular meal around here, and that would maybe be my choice, but the Blue Agave in Port Orchard would make a damned fine alternative once in a while.

Uh huh, imagine you not liking something that isn't "100% Pro El Paso"? How do you know that most El Pasoans feel the same way? If you don't like it, then don't go. It brings jobs and hey, maybe its something different that people will like. I bet you're one of those people that refuses to eat Taco Bell because its "not real Mexican food". Well no slick sherlock. Taco Bell is pretty good and I'm pretty sure Chuy's will be too. Who wants to eat authentic tacos 24/7/365?

If El Paso is the Mexican Food Capital, can someone tell me where I can find a place that serves organic blue corn Huaraches or Tlacoyos, because here in Austin I have no problem finding those dishes, as well as other authentic Mexican dishes. Maybe because there are more Mexican people in Austin than El Paso (from the interior that is). Believe it or not, Chuys serves pretty good Tex-Mex.

Modestminer, it's called living in a bubble. A better person will try to view things from multiple points of view . Sadly (me) most of us have tunnel vision when it comes differing views . We feel comfortable in our little bubbles, our prejudices are perfectly reasonable , like my belief that my mother is the only person on earth that can make good menudo . Of course my reasonable mind knows that's not true (mom isn't a sports fan, she won't read this), but my little bubble tells me other wise. I had an aversion for sushi although I never even tried it, until about 5 years ago, now I love the stuff . My mother told me that when she first moved to the US (from Durango, MX) to El Paso , said she ordered Enchiladas at a place downtown , she told them" these aren't enchiladas" to her enchiladas were made sweet(chocolate/chile)sauce . So we are protective of what we know , and naturally averse to what we perceive as foreign , we are only human after all .I'm sure Chuy's is great , and I hope it's a success , just for the jobs and economics of the thing , if good food is a bi product, that's a bonus .
