OT: Fate of the arena

So many good things happened and happening but this needs put to rest, buried and saved for social media accounts on EP history (Ahem! No pun intend). What needs to be learned is the mistakes so as to not let down voters in such a spectacular fashion, again.

I personally would take EP any day of the week compared to other American cities of similar population size, even with pro teams and amusement parks, and not just because of the weather (despite this afternoon will be blowing like crazy). Not having a "Cheesecake Factory" is not the be all and end all as so locals claim. :p
My question is what would happen to the 163 Million left if they scrap this. Wouldn't a new vote have to happen to decide where the funds go. I mean at this point it sounds like borderline fraud with the city council. Whomever is managing these funds needs to explain quite a bit including where has the interest been going and used for. This whole thing has been a Cluster F and a glaring display of why the city I love is so behind!

It shouldn’t be reallocated to any other projects. I think that’s what City Council wanted to do. It should be decided by the voters again.

Agree 100%. Also on a side note the city is desperate for cleaning/ maintenance crews to start up again. The city is turning into a broken dump and 311 is super slow to respond as I'm sure they are overwhelmed. I've gone back and forth with my district rep Art Fierro regarding this issue. He just makes excuses and has done nothing so far..I don't want him deciding on what to do with the money.

With all the fuss Grossman made, you would think he would be proposing that some of the arena money be used to revitalize Durangito. It seems like once he won he stopped giving a shit about Durangito. Makes you wonder if he even gave a shit about Durangito in the first place.

He showed his true colors. He never cared about Duranguito or its residents. He wanted attention and was successful in derailing the project.

I keep reading that the city screwed up the language for the arena by calling a "multi-use facility" (or something sumilar) and not specifying sports. I can't completely agree with this one. Sports is a common use for any arena, and certainly isn't excluded in the term "multi-use" or "multi-purpose", or whatever the hell it was. Grossman grasped at straws with that complaint, and an idiot judge let him get away it. Any reasonable person would expect sporting events to be a key activity in any multi-use arena.

I agree that we all knew this facility was going to be a sports facility but the blame still falls on the city. If you wanted an Arena, say “Arena”. Calling it anything other than an arena left it open to interpretation and created an opening for Grossman to kick it all in.

You can guys blame Grossman all you want. The city didn’t do their due diligence and left themselves open to this bs. Don’t buy a house without asking your wife about it. Don’t buy a pizza party without asking who likes pizza.

It would have taken a couple of hours to meet with the historical society or whomever and figure out what worked for all parties.

They had a vote and the voters voted for it.

This eyesore deserves to be torn down.

Yeah, probably, but if the city did its due diligence, they could have come to an agreement. Instead, we have nothing.
If our votes don't count then why was even put it up to a vote? The city voted for this and our city leaders let one man ruin it. It wasn't the historical society that stopped it. It was the fact that Grossman was going to put this in the courts for 20 years and the city didn't want to deal with it anymore. So, yes I still think it was Grossman. What has he done with those properties after he won or should I say, after the city gave up? I don't know what his real agenda was, but if truly cared he should be looking for a way to repurpose the historical laundromat or whatever he said it was.

It was a sugar daddy billionaire (from Houston if I remember correctly) that made sure Grossman was successful, pour enough greenbacks into a case you're probably winning.

Again, the city had 1 site in mind and telegraphed it. They should have spoken to all the “obstacles” first. They put the cart before the horse. Talked the talk, but couldn’t walk the walk.

Grossman is the scapegoat, but in the end, El Paso got nothing and has nothing. The city deserves most of the blame. I’ve pointed out before, that Grossman gave the city other locations to put the arena and they refused. We have nothing because the city refused to put it anywhere else.

That is a great point. The city spent tons of money, and wasted years fighting Grossman on the arena, and were not even back at square one. We’re at -1 because we have bond debt and we can’t use it to build the arena we wanted. And even if we wanted it will cost way more than originally planned.

One freaking asshole, wanted to make himself important. Nobody gave a crap about that area for 80 years. If you ever to it, was cause You were looking for a cheap place to park. Grossman was probably hoping they would offer him money to go away. Why hasn’t anyone heard from him since?
Common sence would tell us an area is going to have sports.

F*ck it. Let’s just strike it dead. Wasted money, move on. Who gives a crap about a hybrid venue. Useless as a cat flap on a submarine
And does anybody know what our city plans to do with 128.5 million that is left from the bond? Hard to vote without knowing how those funds will be appropriated.
