OT: My Virus

The stock market crash of '29 was called a panic. Not sure where I'm going with that.

I’m mainly worried about contracting the virus while I’m at the store and then unknowingly spreading it to my in-laws, one of which has stage IV cancer.

My wife and I have recently decided to hunker down and have begun the “coronavirus yard beautification project” since we are not going back to school until April 6th, at the earliest. My weights and bench are getting more use than ever before. My take at the moment is I might as well take advantage of the time at home, stay busy around the yard/house, get back into decent shape, and get some shit done that I’ve been putting off.

Stay safe everybody!

Is it affecting you? I’m starting to get a bit worried.
People above 80 or with significant comorbidities are at the highest risk if they catch the virus. Try not to spread it to them.

And to those of you stealing, price gauging, hoarding toiletries and re-selling, shame on you! This is totally unnecessary and will hopefully bite you in the butt when it's all over. Learn about why we are supposed to be social distancing and think about those that are less fortunate. You are not helping!

Same. I'm a teacher on spring break. I originally had tickets for baseball spring training and had booked a trip to Vegas. And now I'm working on my backyard all week! I too am concerned for my elderly parents. I'm going to do my best to avoid large crowds and stay inside.

Have you guys done prep shopping? If so how much do you calculate you have spent so far? I got three months of supplies for my baby. Which includes diapers, wipes, formula, baby jars, and other stuff. That alone was over half a g. I don’t even want to know how much I have spent on other shit.

To me that’s where the overreaction lies. There isn’t a food or product shortage, aside from TP and hand sanitizer. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to stock up, as it means less trips to the store, however it feels a little like arma****inggeddon when I walk into HEB. They are stocking multiple times a day and I can still get what I need, so I’m not piling up...“yet”. My grocery bills have been average up til this point. Not to say that can’t change.

Don't let the panic consume you. Yes, it is serious but the public panic is just as bad as the virus. Do things around your house that get your mind off of things. We will get through this!
EP Times just came out that 27 in EP are self quarantined after visiting China. A UTEP student had it but it was caught and during spring break.

There is no vaccine, no cure. If nothing major statistically happens here, good. Better to have a bunch of pissed off folks declaring overreaction than a bunch with SARS. It scars your lungs permanently and you're never the same prior to infection.

Go to 7 11 or liquor store, buy your punch and go home and well....do whatever you do.

I just got back from field work and many people are out with their kids, west and east side, because that's fine to do.

That’s where my fear is at. I go to heb and I have to wait in line to get in. Once inside everything I normally eat is gone. Whatever is left you feel compelled to buy it before someone else does. I’m also worried about work slowing down. We’ve already gone from 60+ hours a week with ot pay to less than 35. That’s a huge paycheck cut for me.

In the meantime I stocked up on water and weed so I should be ok for a few weeks. Hopefully by then we start seeing the light at the end of this.

Señor Corona, I'm happy for you that you were able to stock up on bottled water. That said, and I have absolutely NO idea how old you are, remember that there's always tap water. Cities have not shut off public water.

I'm an older dude but as a kid we'd play out on the streets of El Paso, 110 degrees in the summer, and we'd drink from the nearest water hose we could find. I'm still here many years later. Tap water is not going to kill you.

Haha. The essentials.

I feel ya man. These are unsettling times and people are freaking out. Not sure if your grocery store is like our’s, but early in the morning is the best bet to be able to get what you need. I can’t always get what I want but I get what we need. Wow, that last statement sounds like that should be in a song or something.

Hang in there my friend. We’re gonna be ok.

I’m in the early 30s and you have a very good point that hadn’t crossed my mind yet. I’ve been drinking “filtered water” my entire life that I didn’t stop to think there’s a ton of water at home in the kitchen and bathrooms.

I went to COSTCO last Friday and bought only slightly more than normal. Like others I have done some yard work but I have also started catching up on some movies. I have friends that live in China and have been dealing with this for months. They are fine and have been doing online teaching for the past 7 weeks. They are only allowed to leave their building for food supplies. She thinks it will be 3-4 more weeks before things change. My father is 84 and lives in Arizona and there are 4 cases in the subdivision where he lives. That part scares the hell out of me.

Nope, haven't done any of that shopping.

40,000 people die in traffic deaths every year. Are you worried every time you drive?

Take a deep breath and calm down.
Yes. Considering my line of work and the consequences of even a minor accident.

Thanks for the advice. I’m about to take a few deep breaths right now. That usually calms me right down.

Remember that traffic death statistics are an annual statistic. COVID-19 is a one-time pandemic. Yes, it will eventually be contained and defeated. But we cannot treat this like traffic stats. We must give this the individual attention it deserves.

A little over 3,000 people have died in China (4 times the population of the US).

Do you think over 40,000 people will die in the US? I don't think so.

You have a better chance dying on the way to the grocery store than dying from this virus. Stop panicking!!

The death rate is low but it is 20 times high than that of the flu and 14-16% of cases require hospitalization. If our society does not take precautions to slow down the spread we will not have enough hospital beds to care for people. In Italy they are actually making life and death decisions based on who has the best chance to survive. That is a pretty scary thought for those people who have elderly family members or people with underlying conditions (COPD, compromised immune systems). As it stands right now the low end death estimations are 500k world wide.

That's the problem with mass hysteria. Anybody can make estimates and those are the things you shouldn't read because it creates panic.

I am going to look at the facts and go from there.

To each their own. I am not going to tell anybody how they should live during this trying time. However, I think we have a lot to learn from individuals who are currently living through the consequences of this virus, but are in later stages than we are.

For anybody interested, this is an ordinary citizen living in Italy who is giving commentary on the progression of the virus, and the stages at which certain things became apparent to him. It’s not fear mongering, but rather a plea for us to take notice and be quicker with our response to the virus.

Really good read through a series of about 15-20 tweets he put out.

No matter where you fall on the issue, we’re in a no win situation. Those that say we’re doing enough will say, “See only xxx deaths”. Those that say we’re not doing enough will say, “XXX deaths could have been prevented”.

Limit your contact with others
Buy only what you need
Stay in as much as possible
Don’t be a dick

Work for a grocery warehouse, there is no food shortage if everyone would calm down.
There’s a labor shortage and driver (big rig) problem. Stores work on a very small profit and will not hire temp for this crisis.
Give the stores a week to catch up and most items will be back in stock, unfortunately that’s not human nature.
Now our warehouse is limiting what the stores are going to get so we can spread it around the eight states we service.

Went to Albertson's today and they had a lot of food available. I really hope the people that bought tons of food are storing it properly and it doesn't go to waste.

The statistics on death rates and such are likely very flawed, and probably inflated. The amount of people getting infected is several times higher than reported, because most don't have severe enough reactions to warrant going to the hospital, and we're testing a very low amount of potential cases.

This virus is no world ender, but it's certainly concerning to the elderly, and people with respiratory issues. High blood pressure and obesity is a risk factor as well, but chances of death is very low.

We're doing the right thing though. We're attempting to stop and kill the spread before it becomes unmanageable. What we're really worried about is an overrun at the hospitals. If that happens, death rates associated with this virus will really get bad, including unrelated health issues that might not get the immediate care that's needed.

Not a localized situation, this is global. I'm positive a.b. has an answer for the 2500 deaths in Italy.
In Italy and Spain, inaction, higher population density per sq mile in larger cities and mom, dad, grandma, grandpa and the kids all live under one small roof; unlike the U.S.A where retired live alone or retirement communities and people live more spread out unlike Europe.

Also, a family member brought up a good question: "Has anyone called DuPont? They've been killing shit for two centuries!"

I know this is a little out there but what are the odds of a simulation turning into a reality a few weeks later?

Reports from Italy are vast majority of deaths are of people avg age 80 and with multiple pathologies. I won't blame socialized medicine; if you want to, have at it. Some state governments here want to call in the Army Corp of Engineers, SeaBees and DoD medical establishment; in basic terms isn't that socialized medicine & social welfare? Just asking, not complaining.
