You guys are always talking about whether or not sites like this can help or hurt recruiting and it does mention a little bit about that...
The amount of turnover Floyd has experienced in his tenure at UTEP has to be something that hurts in recruiting. You also have to take the gambling incident that other schools use as leverage against Floyd. To me the USC scandal seems to be the one thing that black balled Floyd and he hasn't been able to recover from. The Isaac Hamilton debacle was probably more damaging to UTEP's success under Floyd because he went after a big time recruit in USC country where the scandal was fresh in peoples minds and used it against him to have Hamilton change his mind.
Mud slinging in college athletics was around waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the internet. The UT vs. OU vs TAMU is a great example and goes back pre WWII days when boosters threatened the AD that "we will not lose to them..." mantra became a cash cow for college athletics.
It can also implode within the school itself. For example. WSU coach Leach barged into the TT's president office to renegotiate a new contract. TT president and/or staff asked the opinion of their biggest athletic booster, who then "mud slinged" Leach's name and influenced them not to do it. The rest is history (and hashed out for years in court and Leach barely settled). Leach made it public and it got really nasty. Now that can greatly influence recruiting.
