I remember watching a few of our track athletes being interviewed on one of the Miner Sports Weekly shows that used to air on public television 10 to 15 years ago. In one episode, they were interviewing 2 UTEP track athletes who were both were from Africa and they asked them this same question of why they decided to come all the way over to UTEP from Africa? The track athletes answered that UTEP track is a huge name in the area where they come from, just like how we might view the Yankees or the Cowboys here in the USA. They said that UTEP track has a very large name recognition in the parts of Africa where they come from. He said that they can't wait to go back home wearing their UTEP shirts and hats for the people to see. He said that wearing the UTEP track logo's around their area is a great achievement when the athletes return home. I guess having so many track national championships at UTEP over the decades, combined with track & field being a bigger sport in other parts of the world than it is here, combined with a lack of fewer other competing sports in their area/country has helped create a strong name for UTEP track over time.
I always found that interview very interesting.
