I just can't help myself. I just HAVE to talk about the football team....

So Stull just had to bring in Price to run this sinking ship for the last few weeks of our winless season.
He will make it fun, they said. He will open up the offense, they said. He will put butts in the seats because El Paso loves him, they said.

So we had a bye week so Price could make some adjustments. Help promote the new fun team.

Announced attendance....19,000. (don't have the exact number) Reminder, Aaron Jones was in attendance, some bobble heads were given out, AND 2 weeks to promote it. How'd that work out?

We scored 14 points! 14 friggin points! And if I was reading correctly on twitter, we had about 43 yards offense in the WHOLE second half! Was that correct? (honestly, not even sure) I'm sure glad the offense was "opened up".

Fun is being competitive and/or winning. Everyone was tired of Price when he was here before, and no one cares that he is back. Sure Mike, go make some jokes at a presser. The media will laugh.

We should have given a crack to Mason. I think he's doing a decent job. I really believe the players don't care for this putz that used to be a head coach either. (price)

Zero chance at a win. It sucks because we do have a lot of good kids on the roster...

Turnovers and penalties were huge. Greenlee threw a huge interception deep in UTSA territory early on. In the 2nd UTEP had a big 3rd down sack negated by a defensive holding penalty. That same drive UTEP again stopped UTSA on 3rd down and got called for targetting. UTSA scored a touchdown on that drive. Later Greenlee threw a pick 6 and on the next drive a long UTEP touchdown run was called back by a holding penalty.

Frustrating. Hope UTEP stuns Middle Tennessee next week.

Mason is as bad as the rest, poor tackling, busted coverage, stupid penalties, no speed on defense. No thanks to Mason as HC. We need much better.

Makes me feel for Will and seniors. Will could have six to seven figures in the bank right now but he came back to UTEP to try for a bowl.

I don't blame players, Price, Stull or staff. This was 100% Kugler designed and they just have to muddle through.

I want utep to do exactly what oregon did (smaller scale of course) I want them to hire an aggressive recruiter... willie taggart was told you couldn't recruit to Oregon because of location and if his commitments hold he has a top 5 class coming in!! He is one of the most aggressive recruiters I've seen and we need exactly that at utep.... someone who will push over every rock and bring them down....

I agree. You need some obsessive workaholic Billy Gillespie type that is going to outwork everyone on the road. But you also need good assistants to coach these kids up as well.

Lol why is Price being blamed for this cluster F that Kuglar made. Price could be sitting at home but he chose to help the school and you are mad at him for this mess Kuglar non coaching non recruiting ass made. Be mad at Kug not Price

If Price is doing this to help his best friend Stull and it's not working out the way he hoped he can't be shielded from criticism.

Did you really expect a quick fix? Price was hired 5 days before his first game and they almost beat Western Kentucky. These games are a lot more fun to watch than when Kugler was here.

I was NEVER a big fan of Coach Price. I frequently said he was overrated by UTEP fans. When he came in this year he proved me wrong. They should have won the WKU game and the team, whIle overmatched in talent, plays more competitive games. On top of that his demeanor and willingness to be involved in activities involving students and fans won me over. I'm grateful he came out of retirement to help this program out, if only to finish off a rough season

Stop. Just stop. Trying to keep a civil tongue here, but posts like this and a couple of others are just off of the stupid meter.

For five years you watch a guy drive a college football program through the floor, a guy who didn't even stick around to watch the bitter end, a guy who has left UTEP with an historically bad football program and you criticize the guy who volunteered to guard the house while it burns down?

I realize this is an opinion board, but all opinions are simply not created equal...

Ok laser, I'll take the bait....

This team is ALL on Kugler. He failed horribly. I was one of the FIRST to scream about what a bad idea it was to recruit so many local kids. NO ONE can win at the D1 level with 1/3 of the roster from the El Paso area. 3 years in I was yelling for his head while most folks on here argued give him a chance...he's turning the corner...yada yada...This IS on him....period. (oh and of course Stull for signing him to an extension) Even Saban couldn't save this mess in 3 weeks....

But since you guys aren't getting my point, let me try one more time...

Name ONE school anywhere in D1 football that has a coach resign or get fired that brings back a coach they fired themselves? Don't give me that retirement BS, EVERYONE knew he HAD to go. There wasn't a choice. I don't know for sure, but I would bet 98% of the time, the interim coach is one of the current coaches with zero chance of getting the gig. In bringing in Price, he wasn't doing this only to be helpful. Don't even try to kid yourself or anyone else. Why hasn't anyone asked him or Stull what his compensation is? Anyone find out what the exit agreement (money) was for getting Kugler out of here?
What I find the most baffling is damn near everyone on here screamed for Price's head after 7 losing seasons. No one said we were having fun. damn near no one was upset when he was finally shown the door. Yet, everyone is ok with paying price again just to finish out the season we knew was doomed when Kugs left? I think it's also a strong possibility he is trying to get his son the job here. We have no clue about the new AD yet, so it IS a possibility. Don't put it past Stull to hire someone before he leaves. (Anything is possible at UTEP)
As for the burning the house down comment, I guess you don't remember the house was a blaze when Price left. Fox watching the hen house?

I am not on the #firemikeprice kick like a lot are on twitter. He should never have been brought back to begin with and this isn't his fault. But don't give me that crap that he is such a good guy for coming to our rescue. HE WAS FIRED HERE....might as well brought back Gary Nord.

Yes this is a message board, but we don't all think like blind sheep as you do. And our opinions aren't always wrong as you seem to think.
Go ahead, think the few of us that post the common man's thoughts are wrong because they disagree with you. I will choose to sit in bars conversing with the average fan hearing the same things I try to relate on here.

I think you have a reply on the Houston message board you need to go argue....hasta for now

You really think Price is doing this for the money or he has some ulterior motive for coaching the last 7 games? All your statements are so silly. If Price really needed a job another school would have hired him after he left UTEP. Price was happy to retire and he was just doing this to help out UTEP and (eventhough they lost 3 games) I think he has done a good job with the position he was put in.

So much whining and crying... good god.

Enough, no one cares if you think UTEP should have given the temp job to Mason or Natkin. The ship is freaking sinking, does it really matter if you make one of the outgoing assistants captain? They along with Kugler are the reason the stupid ship sank! When the new coach comes in Im sure EVERYONE on this staff will be gone. They should have all been given the boot along with Kugler after the NMSU game.

Im sure we could have convinced someone like Jon Gruden or Bob Stoops to come in mid-season to right the ship, right!?

I really don’t see what we’re arguing about here. This season, this team was in the dumps when Kugler got fired so why are we blaming Price? He’s just here to finish out the season and nothing more. What were you guys expecting when he came in, 500 yards of offense and a bowl game?
I will admit that I was one of those people who felt like recruiting the best El Paso players may be equal to recruiting average players from Dallas/Houston etc. and I will admit I was dead wrong.
Turning this team around will not be a quick fix in my opinion. I don’t think the talent level is even at 2003 levels when Price took over the first time. I think we’re looking at a full blown demolition of the football program which may take years. Interim coaches don’t turn situations like this around.

We may need to give the next coach a guaranteed 5 year contract.

First of all, there was no"bait"...

Second, if you'd have just stopped right there (see above) you'd been on terra firma. Instead, you just rant about Mike Price's past, his compensation as interim HC, odds of Stull hiring Eric Price, Kugler's separation agreement, and thoughts about average fans in bars. Just for conversation, suppose you learned Price volunteered for this suicide mission for ZERO compensation and to help bring this disaster in for a controlled crash landing for a university he loves?

Finally, you call ME a blind sheep? You must be a newcomer around these parts. Oh, wait, you ARE a newcomer, but you were "yelling for (Kugler's) head" three years in." Well good for you - and interesting math...

Actually, I am NOT a newbie. I have been on here for like 10+ years....ish. I was banned a couple times when I got drunk and went off on a couple old posters. (by previous mods) I was here when we had a great board full of great conversations. But....
Look, I'm not here to argue, it's just annoying hearing people praise Price when he killed us as well. He is not a saint.
My perspective is much like most of El Paso as you can tell by the attendance of the last 2 games.
So yeah whatever...I can't wait till I am proved wrong and stull and price go on their merry way and all ties to them are cut. I am tired of the suffering watching the many blowouts. I am tired of being so frustrated at status quo.

as someone else said.....on to basketball.....look for me in row 2! :)

Price is here to fill a hole for the rest of the season, not to put his son in. I would say to chill and enjoy the games, but who could enjoy what we saw on Saturday. I don’t see it getting better, no matter the effort. JUST NOT ENOUGH TALENT. Like the saying goes there’s always next year.

Correction if I may. Price program was a literal mess in some respects. Kug did raze the home and rebuilt. Then he clustered f'ed it back to the ground again. Having no passing game and questionable player development is like framing a house with the studs several feet apart. It will hold for a while but collapse within itself eventually.

Well, as they say in West Virginia, everything's relative, right?

If Price left a dumpster fire, Kugler left a flaming, EPA-condemned, toxic waste dump, literally the worst NCAA FBS football team in 2017. In Price's final season, UTEP played almost everybody tough (Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Wisconsin) and beat USM in Hattiesburg. Kugler's final season? UTEP will be Oh for '17, completely non-competitive, with blowout loses to Arizona, Oklahoma, and (gasp) NMSU. And don't forget, UTEP's worst year of attendance under Price was better than Kugler's best year of attendance.

I long argued that MP stayed 2 years too long, but anybody who thinks Kugler left UTEP football in better shape than Price is munching on piotte buttons waiting for the Astros to clinch tonight.

And some fans on this board are criticizing Price? Jesus, Mary, and Joseph...

Jesus himself could have come down from heaven and coached this team and we still would lose every game by 14 points.

Kugler was basically an SMU level death penalty that UTEP inflicted on itself. It might be a decade before we come back from this bag of brown butt gravy.

A great hire could get it turned around sooner than 10 years. On one hand I am worried because UTEP has no commits as of the moment. Not that I would want to keep any of Kugler’s recruits but this incoming coach better hit the ground running to scrounge up a class. I hope if he is a coach at another program he can sway some recruits from his former employer to attend UTEP. There is some talent on defense and if you can get some playmakers on offense maybe the turnaround can happen sooner rather than later. Wadley is the real deal and the TEs are ok. But this new coach is going to have to put in work and soon.
