Some Things Never Change

Well deserved up until this year. He’s within $30,000 of Skip Holtz and Willie Taggert and only $3,000 behind the guy above him. What would you have paid a coach who went 0-11 and had been an assistant for 15 plus years, that nobody else was going to hire?

And the basketball coach is close to the top of the pay scale in the conference. Shows you where the priorities are. Too bad we can't pay for both!

Another reason he's at the bottom is because he hasn't been able to win. What's the incentive to give him a bonus?

It's easy to start the low pay talk, (when they are winning) not sure what KROD is trying to accomplish here... Nobody is going to have pity on Dimel's pay. At the start of the season, most of us, wanted him fired.... He is getting paid his worth, maybe that changes? Maybe not. nearly 800k to coach a team to two, 1 win seasons... Saturday is going to be the real test, if they are improved, then they should beat a conference foe in La Tech. If their 5-1 start is the result of playing some really bad teams, then we shall learn that too. It's a true understatement, how important this game is. For many reasons. I hope Dimel succeeds.

I'm not saying Dimel deserves a higher salary. Im just pointing out we always have the lowest paid coach in the conference.

I know Nord had on of the lowest salaries in the nation when he was fired. Mike Price base salary was around the same but filled with incentives that raised it if he was winning and selling tickets.

Sean Kugler was also among the lowest paid in the conference and country.

Don't get it wrong that's a lot of money for El Paso but compared to the top G5 programs it's still has catching up to do.

I don’t have an issue with his pay. Dimel is a well established, older guy, who probably managed his finances well. Based on his 2018-20 performance, I think his pay is fair.

I do have an issue with Senter and his criteria for a contract extension. He gave Terry one and I would have to say that at this point in the season, Dimel “deserves” one based on Terry getting one. What metrics was he using for basketball, that Dimel hasn’t reached in football? Senter gave Terry his during non-conference play after a few games. Maybe Dimel already got one, but still.

Rodney Terry's was likely a trade. Take a small pay cut this year in exchange for an additional year. After all, there's no guarantee that a coach will immediately find another job if his contract expires so why not give up 50k this year in exchange for 750k two years from now?

Let’s say that’s true. Dimel then did it because he’s a “good person”. Wouldn’t you do him the solid at this point? Again, not saying he “deserves” one, yet, but fair is fair.

Dimel's extension and raise is most likely ready. He'll probably get 2 years and bumped up to 800k. The question is does he get it this week or after we beat one of the Texas teams? It's all up to Dimel.

Im sure it's coming too, but Dimel doesn't deserve a raise or extention because 'the team is barely beating who they are supposed to beat' in year 4. Its fools gold. What has he really done to deserve a raise or extension? I would at least let this year play out.
I agree with you 100%. However, based on Terry getting one when he did, doesn’t Dimel have a valid complaint? What’s the basketball equivalent of 5-1? 13-2, 13-3? Something like that. Terry never had a record like that and he got an extension.

Going to a bowl clause is in every FBS coaches contract (FCS have playoff, conference title clauses). So if Dimel gets UTEP to a bowl he deserves it along with conference and/or divisional titles earned. The coaches don't make the rules, the P5 powers, college presidents and NCAA do since they control the gold, so it is what it is.

Dimel should be paid a million per year.

1. UTEP can afford it based on their budget compared to schools with much smaller budgets that are paying a million per year.

2. If and when the job does come open, candidates realize that this is a million dollar job and UTEP is serious about Football.

3. The AAC had said that expansion will require a school to have a Budget over 40 million and pay coaches a million dollars. So by investing in the program, you're sending a message to better conferences that you're willing to invest.

UTEP needs to put forth the best pay package it can to attract the best coaching talent it can. Whether Dimel himself deserves a raise or bonus or contract extension is a separate issue. UTEP needs to step up regardless of the individual coach. As for Dimel, he's got the contract his experience and talent level deserves. So far, he has done his job and earned his pay. He hasn't earned an extension yet. But we are now in the territory where he is starting to exceed expectations. Now is when the athletic department should take a hard look at how to reward exceeded expectations. With the win over La Tech, UTEP has exceeded win total expectations, a win over an opponent that wasn't expected, and are now bowl eligible. With the remaining schedule what it is, we could go 8-4 for the season. Dimel should be getting bonus' for this. Not for winning the games he should have, but for winning more than he was expected to. If, by some miracle, UTEP wins whatever bowl game it goes to, then the school should come up with whatever it can as far as raises, bonus' and contract extensions. And after the great defensive performance against La Tech, our new Defensive coordinator deserves a bonus too. And give Dimel props for making a good hire that is turning out well.

On his interview after the game, he admits to be very conservative once they have a lead. Said an offensive cond. would be more aggressive. Stated as head coach he called plays to make sure we get the win.
Just not his nature to keep the foot on the pedal.
The first two drives were the best I’ve seen in years out of UTEP. Could this be the normal? Does Dimel not have the confidence that we could play like that the entire game? Sooner or later are going to find out.

I guess with all his years of coaching he hasn't quite learned that putting up points can help with wins? Or that more wins in turn equals more excitement, more fans, better recruiting and more money?

I think he does, but maybe he is holding back for some reason. Trust? I know he can't control turnovers, but the offense in the 2nd half had numerous chances to go up 3+ scores. Dimel chose to leave it alone.

I'm happy we won, but damn there is just something deep inside telling me that passive Dimel will screw this up. Let them boys loose Dimel!

I sure hope he reads that last sentence!!!!!

Hoping we get to 8 or more wins. If so, make it worhwhile for Dimel to stick around and raise the assistant pay. He is proving he knows how to build a program up. It would be nice to have sustained success for a change.

I will say, LaTech is better than their record and not terrible. Before us they’d lost 3 games by a combined 10 points…to some ranked teams.
Not arguing about that, but they haven’t found a way to win this year. Other than Boise they were to be the best team we faced so far.

All of La Techs ooc games were vs ranked teams. Their FCS opponent is ranked #11 in the FCS top 25.

LT averaged 34 points against them. Take away the spotted FG and we basically shut them out. Something the top 25 teams couldn't do.

Kugler started out strong but fell off badly after his second season. Dimel has taken the longer road. Slowly built up the team to the point where, hopefully the wins will come for multiple seasons. We don't need a flash in the pan. He does need to let the offense loose more once the team gets a lead. More points makes the other team work harder. More first downs controls the clock and keeps our defense rested.

I know the vast majority of us are pessimists on this board, myself included; but is there an instance where a coach had a turnaround UTEP’s having only for the coach to not be renewed? That right there should tell us what’s likely going to happen.

Dimel still has a chance to make some serious cash this season.
