Ineptitude

I can't believe I am saying this but it seems Senter actually has learned something and is trying something new.

Safe bet, good ol' ball coach hire, didn't work.
Young, hungry, upstart, gamble of a coach, looks like its not working.
Good recruiter at a similar university, coach that should have worked but left for greener pastures.
Young, hungry, upstart coach, can't get anyone to come play at UTEP should now be on the hot seat.

To top it all off, UTEP doesn't have the budget to get whomever might be the best choice available. At least it seems Senter is not making the same hiring mistakes.
At this glacier pace of learning we will find a good coach eventually...and then a power conference school will just swoop in an take them.

SW driving away the talent that Dimel left is concerning. One of the biggest tell tale signs of a good coach is their ability to adapt to the players they have available. Either he couldn't convince the players to buy in on his vision, or he is a "my way or the highway" coach.

Wait. Are you talking about Scotty Walden or Deion Sanders?

When you run a High Tempo offense, it’s going to be simple. The routes are Choice routes, win deep or sit on it. That’s why you see so many deep shots and it also why sometimes you see the QB throw deep and the wr sit and the ball fly to nowhere. The QB thinks the wr is gonna win deep but the wr believes he can’t win deep.

The other thing you will notice, the inside zone scheme. Tempo Offenses like to run north and south to stay on schedule, 4 yard gains at a time. No negative plays with wide runs. Plus you stay simple to play fast and physical.

The way you keep the defense honest and play the outside is the quick screen game. Splits are very wide by wide receivers, especially when running the ball.

It’s the same offense Tennessee runs, it’s a version of Art Briles. The simplicity and Tempo is the secret sauce.

And SHSU was ready for quick screens. I saw two get 5-6 yards and that's it.

FWIW, Sen Ted Cruz will be in attendance for 10/16 game vs FIU. "Need to support Texas schools since they're are playing a liberal Florida University. No one can blame that loss on me" he was heard saying.

We weren't blocking even when we were overloading one side. We'd have 4 wideouts on the right and the defender would get to the receiver right when the ball did.

The same with the run game. I don’t know who’s at fault but it seems like these RBs were just running into the backs of the O-Linemen.

I love how we throw a one yard pass on 3rd and 5 and then a 4 yard pass on 3rd and 10. Horrible play calling and decision making. Not a good combo
Was at the game and you could hear the groans all around on those plays. WTF. Offense coordinator has no feel for the game. It's like he's looking at the playbook and randomly punching in the next play.

Walden does the play calling.

Scotty did not take ownership of his play calling.

I want to get something straight, Minerlandia is still pissed and rightly so. This squarely belongs on Coach Scotty and his coaching staff. Coaches and their family do not need to endure threats. WTF is wrong with some of you? You young Miner fans, welcome and cheer loud but UTEP has been sucking for a long time, so be mad and hold UTEP accountable, but threatening is beyond low rent.

I agree with the fact that you can’t go through constant regime change and expect stability. BUT with that being said should we not expect Walden and his staff to adapt and evolve in order to make this work? Kugler and Dimel were so headstrong in their philosophies and their refusal to adapt and change that we could have given them 10 years and nothing would have improved. Once this season is done Walden needs to take a long hard look at not only his players, but his staff, play calling and philosophies and see what he needs to change because if he wants to stick to his guns and thrown 3 yard screens next year then we know how this will end.
It will not end good for Walden either. He wants to move up.

Yup. Here's what Poppapop had said about Walden:

Given your short window of time with Coach Walden I think you all may be missing some piece/knowledge about the new head coach. I want to be careful how I word this because I don't want it to be a "oh El Paso is just a stop" but understand that Scotty Walden is SUPER DRIVEN and has life goals which include one day being a HC of a Power 5 Team. To do that he CANNOT fail, Misstep, or have a few years of struggles. That bodes well for UTEP football. He is on a mission and that might be what's a little different this time. He wants UTEP to be better than its ever been (yes for his selfish purposes that we all as fans benefit from). He's not satisfied and potentially wants to be a HC in the NFL ?? but why it matters to all of you is you will get every ounce of him leaving nothing to chance and never mailing in anything. Whether its against Nebraska or Middle Tenn -- he will make sure every player, coach, and waterboy will be at their best this week...

When UTEP made the hire of Walden, I went and watched a couple Austin Peay games. What we have seen thus far in terms of playcalling, is exactly what I saw in his offense at Austin Peay. He relies heavily on a QB that can run a successful read option. Lots of jet sweeps and lots of tunnel screens. Haven't seen too much of the jet sweeps to Kam Thomas. It is why I think Walden originally went with Locklear, and Walden has a clear type of QB he wants to recruit. Walden wants a run first QB. But Locklear wasn't running the read option effectively because the OL was Swiss cheese. And Locklear is inaccurate when he does throw the ball, so it's easier to key on the read option because Locklear is not a true dual threat. The dropped passes yesterday killed Cade. Walden has adjusted the offense to Cade but you can tell he's not comfortable calling a game for Cade. And I don't think Cade is a good fit in this offense regardless of whatever adjustments Walden has made. The quick screens were good playcalls when SHSU was very aggressive with their blitz, but the screens against a 4 man rush just was not working. Walden deserves blame for some of the silly play calls and the stupid penalties and the players seemingly being unprepared. Mix that with the players are not executing a very simple offense.

I am willing to be patient with Walden, because UTEP isn't going to do better until we join the MWC and have more money to attract a higher level head coach. What are we going to do? Go get another retread like Dimel? Walden is still learning and adjusting to FBS level talent and coaching, and i hope it starts clicking. I remember last year people were begging for a young, up and coming coach. Scotty Walden met that profile, and now you guys are unhappy and impatient. The only other serious candidate for the job was Marion... and he basically just used the trip to El Paso to recruit Ochoa.

I'm hoping for everyone's sake this still somehow turns out to be true. I'd love to see him gone after 3 seasons because he led the miners to an mwc title in our inaugural year. I just don't hold my breath anymore for that kind of stuff. Past is prologue.

Sure haven't seen any of that, other than jumping around.
