Spring Football

This all seems weird to me. Is this normal? Do other schools do this?
Yes and no. One thing Mike Price stated was that you build your program by having an open door to the alumni players. OU was really big on this for years as was Texas. Now, they are so competitive they have closed Spring Scrimmages. Washington coach went public saying open spring games are important.

Walden is open to alumni and I'm glad to see Wilson being active.

As if Wilson gives any care about athletics. Give me a break.

According to Walden they will be having “exit interviews” after the spring game. So you will see some exits and entrances of players sometime after that.

Actually I think she does a bit, but maybe is understanding that more resources are better spent in football than basketball. Utep prides itself as a basketball school, because of Don Haskins, but we haven’t been for over 30 years! Football has been awful, but if it’s good it is the real money maker and what’s needed to have successful athletics and have opportunities like MWC and beyond. Walden has done an amazing job of recruiting and fund raising. Wilson probably knows that this is way to go and is like whatever about Golding and Basketball and letting him just finish out his contract.

I thought I read he was practicing with the 3rd string team. Not saying, that is why got those 2 picks, but maybe lol... I really hope he lives up to the expectation, or at least gives, Scotty a decent chance to build him up. Would suck to see him leave after spring...

I guess we’ll see. If true, only because her had has been forced.

Interesting that at halftime show on the radio (utep app really), Walden was saying that talent and acquisition will be a budget line item now and he restructured his contract to help, and that up to $70k match was part of it. Him and family didn't want to say "well we need your money" without putting the effort in themselves.

I was there until half.

The Orange apparently had the starting OLine. Shay Smith started for the Orange and I thought played the best. He’s the most athletic and has a surprisingly good arm. I don’t remember that from last year.

Nelson is skinny. Thats the one thing that stuck out to me. He was ok. Inconsistent a bit. Throws a beautiful ball.

Locklear was solid not great. Looks to be the starter I guess but not by a large margin.

Kam Thomas looks great still. Wide Receivers do not get a lot of separation. Marcus Torres had some good catches from the slot. The Quarterbacks are pretty good at sticking it into tight windows and the quarterbacks were accurate on those short throws.

I think if the offense can stay on schedule on first and second downs, offense will be efficient.

Get used to the inside zone again. That’s what Walden does. A lot of people didn’t like that about the run game but it’s not going anywhere. 14-Hashaun Wilson was the best RB. He’s pretty good.

Finally, My MVP was Terez Reid, Corner. He locks everyone down.

The offense looks the same as last year. Even the same old sideline passes that would end up nowhere are still being used. I had high hopes that Malachi Nelson would make UTEP great but he looks awful. No wonder he couldn't make it at USC and Boise State. Not impressed by the QB situation and no changes to the offense. I would be surprised if UTEP breaks .500 this season.
