Good on their part. Not sure why you would be confused by this. I bet many potential customers think they need to be a teacher to bank there. Once a upon a time, GECU stood for government employees credit union and you needed to be a government employee to bank there. You do this to attract more customers.
Navy Federal will do the same if they ever accept non-military consumers.
From what I read It's the Spanish word for root, but will be pronounced 'Rise' in English

I forgot the old name, but a credit union in San Antonio changed its name to human for the same reason, to attract more customers.
Now you can officially open a "Human Fund" ala George Costanza.
