UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Thanks for the info Lil_Train, but I'm tired of seeing net fishing in hopes of getting 'the number 4 assist leader still left in the portal'. The struggle is real for CG.
There are no excuses. Golding just doesn't have it. The football team doesn't have an NIL collective that I know of, yet Dimel has been able to recruit relatively well.

Unless Golding miraculously wins with bottom tier D1 talent this upcoming season, this has to be the last season for him. You can't keep him any further. Utep needs to bring someone that can coach and recruit in today's modern college basketball. Utep and uteps reputation has regressed under Goldings.

Dear Lil Train and others of you that monitor the portals. Are there any worthwhile studs still available that could help us?

Since from when Powell visited and signed, I haven't heard much of anything in terms of official visits. Golding had brought in other guys at around that time, but none ended up signing. I am guessing Golding will try to bring in a graduate transfer later in June/July with that last spot. I just don't see them bringing in an impact type big at this point. I've found monitoring the transfer portal is an exercise in futility when it comes to UTEP because realistically they aren't connected to any of the top or even middle tier guys.

That said, looking at the current roster, there are some obvious question marks. But I think if Powell can step into the point, and if Kalu/Hamilton can continue to improve, the other spots are in good shape. One thing for sure is that they will have an "old" team again, and that will hopefully bode well in the latest CUSA iteration.

Yep. An old team and no real bench. Outstanding PGs and dominant bigs are what win in March. We have neither.

If Hamilton can make Oneyma type progress, it will do wonders. He gave valuable minutes and his footwork was pretty good.

Recruiting a ready to play big at the mid major level is getting tougher with NIL. It is crazy when a guy like Will McNair (formerly of NMSU and Miss.St) is rumored to be getting +$200K at Providence. I like the additions of Powell and Camper. The addition of Hebb is odd, especially if he is not eligible to play next year. That's the reason I think Golding goes with one more guard.

Do you know what happened to our collective?

I don't believe that for a second. $40-50K? Maybe.

You really think a low rated high school freshman will play before a veteran transfer? Even if the High Schooler is a 4 star I don't he would play. You cant coach college playing experience. It dont matter how good the coach is. That high school player would have to be special. Those players are playing in the g league.

That is... a fantastic pick up. Former 3 star commit to DePaul. As axing said, 7 footer.

Adam FinkelsteinDIRECTOR OF SCOUTING

Mbengue is an athletic and mobile big. He has good size and a solid frame that is well defined as it continues to fill-out. He runs and moves fluidly for his size and gets off his feet well. He impacts the game by being a shot-blocker, emphatic finisher, and consistent lob threat. He’s an active offensive rebounder, but needs to find a better balance between protecting the rim and still finishing defensive possessions on the glass. He's a very limited scoring threat away from the rim. His hands are a little questionable and can appear hard at times. He shows flashes of being able to turn both shoulders in the post, but only in very close proximity to the rim. He’s not without a bit of touch to develop, but drastically short-arms his release, really struggles to make free-throws, and even draws fouls at a low rate. Overall, he has legit size and the ability to change the game at both rims, but needs to keep developing the areas in-between."

Looks to me that the coaching staff does read Minerdigs and listen to our complaints. This is Goldings highest recruited commit. I wonder where they got money??
