UTEP Basketball Recruiting

If you go back one more coach, Floyd was definitely viewed as a name coach at the time he was hired at UTEP. It is kind of ironic that he was blackballed for doing the exact same thing (pay for play) that is legal today. If you look at a guy like Sean Miller, who came under federal scrutiny while at Arizona, but is now thriving again at Xavier; you see how much has changed. In fact, Miller has made it a point to pluck off CUSA guys to build his team via strong NIL payoffs. Who needs to recruit the Florida JC conferences when you can get proven D1 guys out of CUSA? These schools have become feeder schools to P5. Similar to football, Golding needs to really emphasize recruiting JC guys.
Hopefully Camper is the beginning of what you're talking about.

He should also be able to fill needs from the portal with guys coming down from P5.

You would think. Other than Sibley has he gotten anyone? I think if he can get guys like Hardy, Solomon, and Givance (at that level), that is a best case scenario. With the portal transfer period ending tomorrow, I would expect to see some movement. Golding said he wants a guard, and the best available, so we will see.

And it's not impossible. Wku and LA Tech have picked up some former p6 players this offseason.

Care to elaborate?
2Step believes that Sean Miller, who was coach at Arizona in 2017-18 had some contact with unranked recruit Souley Boum. Somehow directed him to USF. Though that coaching staff had roots at Columbia, which Sean Miller has no ties too. Clear as mud!

Except FAU was able to build a team and retain them, with the coach making far less money than Bronzeing does. Only UTEP and less successful schools are “feeders”. Other schools have found ways to accomplish things.

I think what happened is that in 2017 when Miller at one point had the #2 team in the nation. He had to watch game tape in preparation for their conference opener. It was a big game against rival ASU who was ranked #3. Miller wanted this win bad so he studied every film he could get his hands on. One of those tapes was the game Arizona St against San Francisco. That’s where Miller first laid eyes on Boum. Boum wasn’t very good that night. Actually he didn’t even play. But just by the way Boum sat on the bench, Miller knew he was looking at someone special, a future all Big East player. From that point on he kept tabs on him. Let him develop at mid majors and when the time was perfect, swept in for the dream season.

Makes sense. Still waiting to hear how Boum and Miller were connected previous to this past season!

Looks decent, but damn only made 1 out of 6 three point attempts? I thought Golding said we needed shooters. At least he's 80% at the line.

So who is our PG now?
That was his sales pitch---nobody can shoot at UTEP. LOL

Seriously 13ppg d1 transfer is better than I expected. And 79% from the line suggests he could improve from 3.

Powell went to at least 3 high schools. 2 Community Colleges, apparently committed to NIU without playing there, played 1 year at Buffalo, and is apparently on his way here.

This stop will be the one though!

And atleast he can dribble and drive to the basket. Won't look drunk handling the ball. Sends Hardy back to a reserve role where he belongs.
You don't bench a 5th year d1 guy who shot 32% from 3 last year in favor of a 1 year d1 guy who shot 17%.

You have the academic people slow walk him so he does not graduate next year. So he is stuck at utep for 2 years unless he sits out.

I view Powell as more a replacement for McKinney's role. Hardy's minutes would be affected, but that would be a good thing as he played way too many minutes last year after McKinney left. I'm wondering if Golding is thinking Hebb can play some PG as there really isn't an option on the roster at the moment other than a first year freshman. Also, this is Hebb's second D1 transfer, so he will need a waiver to play immediately. There is no quarantee he will even be available next year. The last spot almost has to go to a veteran PG. Another interior guy would be good, especially with dos Anjos' injury which will keep him out for most of the summer. Hopefully, Elijah Jones is ready to come in right away. From what I heard, he had a way to go based on practices last year.

Agree. We've already signed 5 guards. I'm just not sure about Kalu and Hamilton giving us 40 minutes in the middle. There are plenty of bigs left in the portal.

Ole Miss got Sharpe and Cisse. There's gonna be lots of blocked shots. Sheesh.

Jimmy Bell to Miss State. Jans still kicking our ass.
I say get best player you can get no matter the position .

I respectfully disagree. We have one more scholarship. I think it needs to go to a PG. If it goes to a big man who do you have playing PG?
