UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Doesn’t seem to me the gold is too high on Jr college transfers- I believe he’d rather go with somebody in a D1 transfer or D2 All-Star. Jucos never seem to work out for Joe Goldie. Although I think that’s more on him than his preconceived notion in the actual player.

Anybody remember Jorge?

3 points, 2.5 rebounds in 7.7 minutes at Southern IL. 14-19 for the year.

"We are fired up for Jorge to be coming to the Borderland to play for the UTEP Miners! He is a kid that we knew very early on in the recruiting process that we wanted to be a part of this program. His development at Lee College under Coach Nick Wade, accompanied with his passion for the game have afforded him this tremendous opportunity. With his high IQ for the game and strong fundamentals, it will allow for us to use him in a lot of different ways. It is also very exciting for him to be able to play in a community that will embrace his Mexican heritage."

I do but was wondering what happened to him?

He did not have the juco year he was expected to have to he was urged to seek other pastures.

His freshman stats were 8.7 ppg and 6.9 rebounds. His sophomore stats were 10.6 ppg and 6.2 rebounds.

I'd say they expected him to average more like 14 & 9 or more.

Anyway, good thing he did not waste a scholarship on him.

Put Scotty Walden in charge of BB recruiting. I bet he can do a far better job than Golding and Co.
Walden has demonstrated a great ability to bring talented players to UTEP. That’s impressive, considering UTEP’s horrible football history, NIL and current transfer rules. I understand he still needs to win 6+ games and get the team bowl eligible. The thing that impresses me the most is Walden is laying the foundation with mostly HS players and a few key transfers. It’s great to see UTEP football compete with P4 schools and other successful mid majors for recruits. We have lost a few players to the transfer portal, but that’s to be expected. Walden and staff are hustling and bringing in solid replacements. I feel confident Walden is on the right path.

Unfortunately, I’m not feeling the same confidence with Golding and the direction of UTEP basketball. All former UTEP basketball coaches before him were able to bring good talent to EP. That was never been an issue, until now. UTEP basketball was our pride and joy for many years and now it seems like a distant memory. It pains me to see UTEP basketball fall further behind other mid majors. Why does Golding struggle so much to recruit talented players to UTEP? Maybe Golding and staff need to learn a few things from what Walden is doing…

I agree, Rot. In thinking about it, the way the football staff use the socials to get the word out about new recruits and recruits that they are courting is impressive. On the other hand, we hear ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from the basketball team. There's no hype, no word on recruits, no up-to-date info. It drives me crazy because I know how big a role that socials play in creating and maintaining hype. That's just one level of communication, too. I realize there are other layers that are not being made a priority, as well. It's as if they are encouraging the fanbase to NOT care, stay uninformed, and trust them to do good things. Not an effective marketing strategy, to say the least.

But, I guess we can look forward to the annoying screaming fan in the stands and the various out of date theme nights with 3k in the stands next season.

I’ve heard more about UTEP Football over the last 2 years than Utep Basketball. Ran in to a HS coach saying Utep Football wasn’t even mentioned as a choice with his kids before and now they are! This is due to Walden and His Staffs effort. Golding has had no presence in DFW or Houston and that goes for HS and JC! With that being said do we really think that Golding’s entire staff will stay in tact? I said from day 1 after the season was over, Golding keeping his job and saving his skin was contingent upon making staff changes and doing a better job embracing and promoting for NIL Dollars 💵

Remind me again. Who hired Walden?

Remind me again. Who hired Walden?
The same guy who hired Dimel, Terry, and Golding.

I really, really hope that Walden is successful. But as of now he has yet to prove himself. He only won three games last year. Highly rated recruiting classes are nice, but don't really mean anything unless they translate to wins on the field. I hope that Walden proves to be the next Wallis caliber hire, but it's too early to know.

Walden hasnt done anything on the field yet, but he definitely deserves more time. Cant say I EVER felt the same about Golding after year one.
Don’t worry even though Walden is killing it in recruiting … you guys will want him out this year when he only wins 5 …..
