UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Good size for a SF. About like OF3. Good numbers at the JC level. 13 pts/gm, 6.5 reb/gm, and shoots the 3 at 37%. Hope it translates to big boy bb. Well…medium big boy bb anyway.
I suspect he is/will be a PF. At least his first year.

He previously committed to UIW.... and the other 3 schools listed at verbal commits are nothing to write home about.

His stats were good enough for a first year player who will have 3 to play.

Edit, I presumed he would stay in juco another year. But he is playing at utep this year. This could be a pretty valuable guy if he stays 3 years.

Did I miss something and we lost an assistant coach?
Probably needs to be an assistant coach thread because now that everyone can have 5, I suspect mid and low major programs will lose 2-3 per year on average. Some fired. Some get promotions &/or pay raises.
(Almost zero firings will be called firings)
An ETSU guy went from being an assistant coach at ETSU to being an assistant coach at a juco. People don't move cross country for 50-70% less money at a less prestigious job on their own except in really rare instances. When you see that it's probably safe to assume he was not welcomed back.
I expect a of years, for guys that are being fired, they are given months of paid notice so they can look for other jobs while staying on the payroll at least until a replacement is found.

They lost Jeremy Cox to Oklahoma State.
Here are 2 hiring releases that I could find at Hoopdirt. It's hard to keep up because even mid majors tend to have 8-10 guys that are really assistant coaches with different names but the bottom 3-5 guys have made up positions.
Like Director of Player Relations, Director of Player Development,Video Coordinator, Director of Analytics, Chief of Staff and so on. And at high majors there are even more. And I am even not counting "strength coach", and "Trainer/Sports Medicine guy. Oh and lest I forget, Director of Equipment. Because you have to spend $70k a year+ benefits for a guy to keep up with the basketballs. Otherwise you could lose some or have them stolen.

6-2022
Bryen Spriggs (former chief of staff) has been promoted to an assistant coach while Austin Cox (chief of staff), Brandon Decker (strength and conditioning coach) and Rian Stubbs (special assistant to the head coach) are joining the UTEP men’s basketball program, head coach Joe Golding announced Wednesday.

Spriggs was with the Miners during the 2021-22 season, helping them achieve plenty of success. UTEP picked up its first 20-win season (20-14) since finishing 22-11 in 2014-15, earning the Miners a spot in The Basketball Classic for their first postseason appearance since 2015. UTEP beat Western Illinois, 80-54, on March 19 for its first postseason win since 2009.
------------
6-2021
Joining Golding on the bench are associate head coach Jeremy Cox, assistant coaches Butch Pierre and Earl Boykins, chief of staff Bryen Spriggs, director of recruiting and player development Khristian Smith, and director of basketball operations Caleb Villarreal.

New guy?

Forward 6'9" 210 lbs

Raijon Dispensa

  • Graduated from South Kent HS while also previously attending Shipley HS
  • Tabbed to the 2024 Zero Gravity Classic All-Academic team
  • Averaged a double-double (20.2 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game) while adding 2.5 assists per game during his senior campaign
  • Paced the league in double-doubles
  • Garnered All-Main Line honorable-mention honors in 2022 with Shipley
  • Landed on the 2022 Ball Drop Classic second team
  • Stuffed the stat sheet with 11.0 ppg, 9.3 prg and 2.0 apg during his junior year
  • Named to the All-Main Line second team in 2021
  • Accounted for 12.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg while chipping in 1.0 apg as a sophomore
Not bad stats as a Senior assuming the high school competition is decent. Is he a walk on or what? No evidence of him on verbal commits.

I think he is a walk-on. Pretty sure DC Wickware got the last scholarship?

A walk on from New Jersey?? That's a long way to be doing a walk on. I see that he is Puerto Rican and I think he is from the Philly area. But most walk ons go to a school that is closer to them. Maybe he just got a regular scholarship with no money. Lol

Might possibly play against the kid in the MWC

Edit: don’t know why it doesn’t show the link but it’s concerning the kid from chapin and his final 4 choices

This is very interesting. As I'm sure you remember Train, we were in Chuck Hayes' final four, along with Kentucky (the school he chose), Kansas, and St Louis. We missed out on the dad, hopefully we can sign his son.

One more note: knowing that Chuck Hayes has a kid that we are recruiting makes me feel incredibly old.

I thought he committed to Colorado.

If I was him I would wait for better offers. Why do these players commit so early?

I'm sure if he waits a little longer he will get more offers. It's still very early.. I don't think he sticks with this commitment.
The benefit of signing early is what if they get hurt and other offers dry up? Besides, they can always decommit later on. Are letter of intents even enforceable now?

Nearly every year I see 4-6 guys who signed or committed to lower level schools early. And then when they had a good year, they decommit or ask for a release or whatever and then sign at higher levels.

Memphis is having a problem with a new player. SMU transfer. Was supposedly promised $X monthly. 4 months later he has not gotten a Dime. (edited typo)
So he asked to step away from the team I guess to give them a final chance at coughing up the cash or he will sit out the year and go elsewhere next year. Oh, and it seems he was not happy with not starting or playing enough in an exhibition against UNC.

And he's not even a starter. I would have assumed SMU had more money to give than Memphis. That should tell us a lot.

I dont feel sorry for some of these kids. They are being misled by adults because they want a "bag" before they even earn it.

And Memphis had this exact problem last year mid season. They took a guy with great stats at Louisiana. But he did not play much at Memphis and sat for 6 weeks over some kind of NIL issue.

This whole thing concerns me. My proposal is limit kids payment to scholarship, books and room and board.
And limit coaches salaries to $150k. Anybody that does not like is free to exit.

Otherwise the black hole is only going to get bigger & bigger.

He's 23 years old. He's not a "kid." Other than that, I agree with you. He's looking to get paid before he's done a damned thing. They all are.

Hes probably a bit naive though. I dont know his background so I'm just guessing. Agree he can make his own decisions and deal with the repercussions at 23, but I'm sure he's got someone in his ear.
