UTEP Basketball Recruiting

I understand where y’all are coming from it’s been frustrating. This is the hand we were dealt by a completely clueless AD and now we just have to make the best of it. I don’t know much about his recruiting classes at ACU but from what I’ve seen they weren’t anything particularly impressive on paper. With that said toward the end of his time there he did manage to put together three consecutive teams that were worthy of NCAA Tournament bids. So there’s at least some proof he can get it done. Maybe not here yet but he’s done it in his career. Let’s just hope he can find a way to replicate that success in this new NIL environment.

Wow Corona, you’ve turned a new leaf and are actually choosing hope over doom and gloom. Can I get the number to your Therapist who specializes in Miner Fan Trauma!

What he did at ACU is irrelevant now. No transfer portal and no NIL. Why is this year going to be any different than his previous years at UTEP?

Fair point the game has definitely changed with the portal and NIL. What he did at ACU was in a different era, so it doesn’t guarantee anything now. I still think there’s value in the fact that he’s shown he can build a winner, even if the context was different. As for this year being any different, I’m not saying I fully believe it will be, but maybe with some of the returning pieces, another year in the system, and hopefully better roster construction, we’ll see some growth. I’m not blindly optimistic, just trying to find some reason to hope we’re not stuck in the same loop again.

He might have been able to “build” a winner, but the building part is different. He no longer has players staying under him for 4 or 5 years like he did at ACU. He now has to quick fix every year. If KJ Thomas averages 15 ppg this year, he won’t be on the team next year. Pewter doesn’t have time with any good players.

What he did 5-10 years ago is so far in the past now.

I agree. Building and assembling are two different animals. This last season was the most continuity he'll ever experience again as a coach. That was his chance to build. We all know he hasn't been able to assemble for sh!t.

Alright fine, you guys got me. He’s an old stubborn coach who refuses to adapt to the new era. His system’s outdated, his roster’s full of guys who wouldn’t start anywhere else, and we’re clearly on a one way street to finishing in the bottom third of the conference again. Feel better now?

Probably only a rumor or maybe not. This year there were both disagreements with the staff and some players and finger pointing 🫵 was quite apparent last year after the NMSU loss and losing streak. That alone should’ve cost Golding his job I think, but instead he got to reset with new team and new staff. In today’s world the coach is also the GM. I just think Senter doesn’t want to start over going into the MWC with all that will already be required and Golding has convinced him for some reason that he’s our best hope smh 🤦🏽

No man. When you take all the sugar coating off it makes it more bitter.

The only flaw with that theory is this. If things play out the way most people are expecting, we’re likely hitting the reset button right as we enter our first year in the MW. Instead of making the move now and giving a new coach a year to establish his system, bring in his players, and hit the ground running in Year 2, we’re potentially setting ourselves up for a full blown rebuild during our debut season in a new tougher conference.

I agree that’d be better
