UTEP Basketball Schedule

It’s partly what kickball wrote, but it’s been 10 years since UTEP had a NIT caliber team. That team didn’t even sniff the NCAAs and no team since has come close to sniffing the NIT.

Throw in a degrading home schedule and a degrading CUSA and you get what we have. We’re currently “equals” with Sam Houston St and Jacksonville St, when 20 years ago, they would have been buy game opponents or the worst team in the SBI, going home with 2 losses.

Lack of winning and worst opponents in the country are why people don’t go. You can improve all that other stuff, but it doesn’t matter if you’re finishing 16-15 or your best wins are Yale and UCSB.
To me the opponents are a lesser point than the lack of winning. Most of us don't go to games to see the other team, we go to see our team. If we are winning constantly we would get 7-8k to watch Timbuktu State play UTEP. It's what this city used to do and still can do. Obviously, bringing big names helps attendance but the reality is that it's not going to happen consistently. Winning solves all our problems.

But it does matter. Who wants to see NNMU on Saturday? I would bet if Tarleton St was the opponent on Saturday, there would be a lot more interest in the game. Season ticket purchases would be higher if UNM, BYU, Utah, and Fresno St were the opponents instead of FIU, Liberty, Sam Houston, Kennesaw St, and MTSU.

It’ll pick if we wanna and once we are in the mountain west I think. Playing Wyoming, UNLV, Nevada, UNM … etc… hits different for fans.
I doubt it'll hit the same way for the newer generation (2005 grads onward, when we left the WAC) than it would for the older, but we'll see. It'll be a nice change for sure.

Those days are long gone. We will never have that type of schedule again. Yes, a D1 would attract more than NNMU but I still think winning constantly would do more to the attendance. When I say consistently, I mean years not a year. It's the only real way to build a fan base.

6-8k is what we should be getting at minimum. We lost a lot of fans after all these years of losing. Old fans have passed and new fans weren't made during this time. We stopped winning and our fanbase diminished. It sucks. UTEP let this happen. It's hard to believe we still have a decent fanbase for a G5 after all these years of crap.

LOL It is ludicrous that you think 6,000-8,000 should be attending the games AT MINIMUM.

Yeah because the name is everything. You can’t make a movie with Jennifer Aniston and then replace her with Jamie Lynn Spears for the next one and expect people to keep going. That’s essentially what UTEP has been doing.

You have to wonder if it’s incompetence or arrogance that UTEP thinks fans will just show up for anything regardless of the price or product.

How many times does Kids Night or Military Night have to fail before the school realizes that it’s not moving the needle.

Welp some people think it's ridiculous to reply to every post. To reach their own though.

Edit: I was curious and looked it up. 8 years ago we were averaging over 6k and 10 years ago we were averaging over 8k. That's not so long ago. So, yes I stand by my original opinion. It's doable and has been done before.

Who's responding to every post?

You're talking about the past. A lot of those fans are gone. Let's just accept that UTEP is leading CUSA in attendance, be happy, and move on.

I think it's more apathy. The people in charge aren't pressured to do anything differently, so the same people do the same things every year.

Don't do military night and face backlash. Except it or not, El Paso is a military town. Fort Bliss and most of your older generation tio's and grandpacito served in the Marines.

But....

It’s just lazy. No imagination. A real promoter would be running a special on tickets and concessions to get people out to the game on Saturday. Senter doesn’t care about fans. He would rather see 2,000 people that paid full price for tickets and concessions than get more people in there.

We won't be leading MWC. I won't accept that this is the best we can do.

Military night for football or basketball means absolutely nothing. Fort Bliss soldiers do not support UTEP.

That’s right. The young guys stationed here from Georgia and South Carolina, don’t give two shits about UTEP vs FIU. They might check it out once, but it’s so very few, it doesn’t really matter.

You don’t need military night, if you had a competent football team.

I wont get excited about Bynum. He will be gone after this year. He is going to go get paid from NIL money. A big school will come and scoop him up.
That’s the case with every college player in football or basketball. We must enjoy the players on the field or court, cause next year they are gone.
Doesn’t matter it you are UTEP, Alabama, UCONN or any other school. The almighty dollar rules. Education and loyalty are history.

This from the same person who two posts prior said, "Let's just accept that UTEP is leading CUSA in attendance, be happy, and move on."

Leading CUSA in attendance means little to nothing. But people like you are the reason UTEP think it matters.

I don't work for UTEP. I don't get paid to go to UTEP games. Following sports is a hobby for me.

There is nothing I can do to change things at UTEP. The people who work at UTEP and get paid are the people responsible for doing that.

Of course leading the league in attendance matters. It's better than averaging 1,000 fans a game.

We could always be like UTSA and get a yearly high of 975 for a home basketball game
UTSA has been to the same amount of NITs and NCAAs as UTEP since 2015-16, so what difference would it have made if UTEP averaged 975?

UTSA has also been to 5 straight bowls and won the last two, I would rather have that than be “attendance champs of CUSA”. How bout you?
