We’re .500

They’ll give Dimel an extension.
If the Miners get to play FIU they will likely have 4 wins. Most on here thought 4 wins would save Dimel's job. I think he is safe since the team is improving. Extension might be going a bit too far at this point though.

If we actually get to play more games this year my guess is they'll exceed 4 wins, based on play of the defense. Charlotte was the next toughest team after UAB on the schedule. Again that's if we play the remaining games on the schedule and get at least 1 of 2 make up games.

Our schedule changed in our favor. .500 in a regular schedule would be way different. Im still not sold on Dimel, but I give him credit for taking what happened this year and making his team competitive. He has still made plenty of mistakes though and remains stubborn on offense. Also quitting before the kickoff at Texas left a really sour taste in my mouth. There is still a loooong way for him to go.

Remains stubborn on offense? Now that he has a gun slinger in Hardison there were so many time he should have just pounded an opponent with Hankins/Fields/Awatt but he decided to throw it. There were two drives against La Tech that were a)not penalized and b) moving the chains with the ground game and he decides with a short or lateral pass game and both got stymied.

Having a three headed monster at rb like he has is a blessing. Kug would have "shat his pants with delight" if he had three.

Yes stubborn on offense, or shall I say bad play calling and inability to adjust in-game or to the opposing teams' defense. If for example we are running all over somebody's ass them keep doing it and call plays to utilize those runs and play action. If a team is playing up in man then utilize our TEs up the middle or go long. If a team is sitting in zone or blitzing then use screens or slants or draws or QB runs. Im no football guru but damn utilize some imagination and trust your young men to execute. Also give the ball to your best players.

I think the fact that he has gone away from the RPO, zone read and to a lesser extent the wildcat shows his ability to adjust to the roster. At KSt he had a lot of success with his offense. It is what it’s always been. Top 3 in conference rushing and bottom in passing. I don’t expect him to change much but I do expect it to start producing better results.

That's a fair assessment when it comes to gameplanning, but in-game adjustments are extremely important IMO. Its the difference between mediocre coaching and winning coaching. It takes smart and capable coaches and players who are prepared. I guess that's why its rare.

I feel like it’s easy to sit and always say the coach should have done the opposite of what didn’t work.

There are plenty of examples of coach doing exactly what we said in the chat and the players unable to execute it.

Well not when we are seeing and saying it during the game, but yes its always easy for us armchair retrospect coaches. And like I said, it takes smart and prepared players too. I hope to it more as Dimel progresses in the program.

You don't even think about giving him an extension until the end of next year. If we can win six this year and have a winning season next year we can talk. Right now UTEP has definitely benefitted from the covid schedule. If we lay the original schedule we probably beat NMSU. Other than that we would be sitting 1-5 and I don't think the mood would be near as upbeat. The next two games are key. No excuse not to beatva bad FIU team at home and we would show progress by beating a decent UTSA team on the road. If Dimel proves he can beat conference teams I will be very excited about next year.
