BREAKING: Miners currently hosting a transfer QB and former five-star recruit

Absolutely
Let’s not even entertain the fact he would play for us.
The fact he paid a visit is absolutely insane and would’ve never happened before with any highly rated recruit.

Now if we can add some competent play calling behind it….😒

He has been a bust though. He committed to USC in 2021 and he couldn't get playing time at Boise St. Sounds like another Locksley.

Unless they’re getting rid of the tournament to play P5 road games, I don’t see how it’s a bad thing. Just have to forget about the Haskins days. It’s been 13 years since a P5 came here (Nebraska) and it’s not like the place was sold out for them either.

How bad would the schedule be without the tournament?

I haven’t been to a Sun Bowl tournament in a while. Is it still considered ‘not a UTEP event?’

I remember the tickets were always separate, the announcer was different, the game always was a little bit different, because it was ran by the Sun Bowl Association and not the University.

I rather UTEP start scheduling more road games against quality teams over home games against crappy teams. If it means having less home games so be it. Need to level up and start elevating the program as we migrate towards the MWC. Also, get rid of the Sun Bowl tourney once and for all. It’ll never attract the marquee teams like the 80s again.

Agree with this. With how the scheduling rules are now, I think the Sun Bowl has actually done a really good job with the tournament. The days of getting the big name teams have been over for 20 years, but they've been putting together a good mid major field. And yes you're not going to realize that if you're a casual college basketball fan.

One thing I do give Golding credit for is scheduling good mid majors on the road - UCSB, Loyola, Pacific, etc. That's been missing for a while. Again, not sexy but something I've been wanting to see.
I would've liked they play in a better in season tournament.

This tournament is decent, but only if you pay attention to college basketball. Yale and Akron are two good programs at the moment. Jackson St is just having a horrible year. Most fans aren’t going to get excited about Yale or Akron, but Arizona St and Texas Tech aren’t coming here most years. It’s time for everyone to realize that the Yales and Akrons of the world are the best the SBA can get now. Expecting better, is just foolish.

The rest of the home schedule is poor as well. 3 non-D1s, Seattle, and Tarleton St. Tarleton wasn’t really UTEP’s choice either. Probably a better opponent because of BG than other possible WAC opponents, besides Grand Canyon.

Going about a decade without a formidable team plus this schedule, aren’t great for ticket sales.

I've got a different strategy. Recruit better and coach better, then bring in teams that fans want to see. In my four years at UTEP (85-89) we certainly had some cupcakes on our home schedule, but we also hosted Georgetown, Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon State, Texas, Auburn, Boston College, UAB, and Maryland. Of these, we only lost to Oregon State. Fans get much more excited watching this type of team than they do playing Northern New Mexico after having already played Sul Ross and UTPB.
There has to be some middle ground. Also not sure why UAB is mixed in there with the others. UTEP and UAB could probably play each other here and there, but I don’t think fans will turn out for them.

NMSU will return to the non-conference schedule in 2026. That should help the schedule a little bit. The power teams aren’t coming here unless they have a special reason to.

Alabama played at North Dakota the other day because one of their players asked them to. Cases like that and relationships with other coaches are probably the only way name teams are coming here, and it won’t be often.

I would like to see UTEP schedule Pac-12, MAC, and MVC teams. Along with LaTech, UAB, Rice, UTSA, UT-Arlington, and some Big West, WAC, WCC schools going forward.

The 80's aren't coming back.

Yeah so you understand the logic in bringing in teams we can beat
