BREAKING: Miners currently hosting a transfer QB and former five-star recruit

Not to make excuses, but it’s harder to turn a football team around in one year as compared to basketball.
No it’s not. Curt Cignetti took 3-9 Indiana to the CFP in year 1. He recruits and plays against Ohio St, Penn St, Michigan and other Big 10 schools.

Jerry Kill took 2-10 NMSU to 7-6 and won a bowl game in his first year. NMSU is an all-time bottom tier FBS job.

I’m not saying it’s impossible to turn a football program around in one year, but highly improbable. You’re describing two success stories compared to maybe 10 failures. Yeah, kudos to those coaches for turning their programs around in one year. The reality is, it’s not that easy. If it was that easy, everyone including you would be a football coach.

Indiana is a bad example…. They got crushed by Ohio state and barely beat a mid Michigan team …. They didn’t play anyone good in the big 10

The question is: are these one year turn arounds being sustained. NMSU doesn’t appear to be. Time will tell about Indiana.
So if you win one year is that turning a program around? I think the the answer is No.
Rarely, if ever. What school has gone from zero to being a consistent power in your lifetime? I was looking at the NCAA Football national Champions and it’s the same schools that win: Bama, LSU, one of the three Florida schools, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio St., Clemson. You have to go back to 91 with Washington and 1990 with Colorado/Ga Tech before you got some weird outlier teams. The super elite teams have enough money to keep the competition down. They can spend more money than anyone else. TCU and Boise State have tried but they can’t shatter the glass ceiling.

I don't get the questioning? Yes, they are rhetorical in nature to inspire debate but UTEP went thru this before. In all fairness, the king of recruiters (post Bob Stull era) still goes to Nord. He recruited the players and went to a bowl and after struggling was let go and left a fully stocked kitchen for the incoming administration that led to another two bowl appearances for the head coach. Now, that is a legacy for Nord and should not be forgotten (but his head coaching lacked so many other intangibles, so his ouster was warranted). Scotty has not delivered anything, yet. Just two conference recruiting crowns and a former top 2023 qb. I am so hoping he is our version of Kaidon Salter skill set with a little Tyler Huff moxy and leadership. No Pavia comparison. Pavia is a unique player and I don't want our qb taking on linebacker's.

Who cares? NMSU lost their coach. Do you think they would have been 3-9 if Kill would have been there this year?

If Walden wins, he will leave. The second he wins, he will leave. So does it matter if he wins in year 2 or year 4?

You always bring up programs that have a one year turnaround, now you say it doesn’t mean anything.
We will be happy to have a winning season but alll us want to have prolong success.
No one thinks or expects us to compete with the P -5 schools.

I’m talking about sustainability. There’s a really really good chance UTEP will never sustain it because of history. If Walden wins and moves on, time for the next guy to come in a win ASAP. Not wait 4 or 5 years to appear in the NM Bowl.

Just to play devil's advocate, you do have a legit point. Let's take Boise St vs UTEP and why I pick these two. A color commentator pointed out during a BSU game some weeks back that Boise has built upon the legacy of legendary coach Dirk Koetter who HC's there from '98-2000 (who just announced he is officially retired after a 42 year career) and he was a coach at UTEP early in his career. Both schools went in opposite directions. There was a Lee/Bailey/Nord/Kugler (played under Stull) UTEP connection but it did not yield much success but to mirror Koetter, Boise has become the best mid major in college football.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about

Boise State has done a good job growing their program in a sustainable manner. Their new HC is making 1.1 million meanwhile their previous coach Andy Avalos was making 1.7 million and Chris Petersen was making over 2 million before he left. While they can pay more it looks like they are doing their due diligence and not overpaying for their coaches because they fired Avalos only three years in. UTEP will be making about 4 million per year with the new MWC media deal and they should be able to pay every head FB coach over a million. There’s no reason not to.
