Can we stop pretending that this is a good team?

The Miners are now 7-6 in league play. By any definition that is a mediocre record, and we play in a mediocre league. We are nothing more than a mediocre team.

The worst part is that this is Golding's peak here at UTEP. Among his main rotation are five seniors, seniors that he's been able to keep here for multiple seasons, including our best player, Frazier (even if he didn't play like it tonight). If Golding stays he will have to rebuild the team, and he has proven incapable of bringing in the required number of contributors in a single recruiting year. It won't get any better than this while he's the coach, and this just isn't good enough. He obviously gets to coach until the last game of this season, but after that I hope that this misery ends and he's sent walking.

As for the next coach, since Haskins left we're 3 for 4 when hiring a hot shot assistant, and 0 for 3 when hiring a proven coach. Maybe we should go back to the previous formula.

Likely won't make a difference but I'm tempted to encourage us all to flood Senter's inbox demanding a change. Meh. I guess we should not do that. Nope. Don't email Senter. He doesn't care. He's here for a comfortable retirement. Our emails will make zero difference. None whatsoever. Let's not bother. It's not like a good coach is out there who can make this a winning program. That coach does not exist. It's only Senter's guys. So as much as it sounds cool to blast Senter's email it won't make a difference so let's just not do that.

Unless you have like a couple of million to fund the coaching change. Then by all means do that.

But nah. Let's just let Fools Golding keep us a middling program with zero chance to compete for conference championships or NCAA tournament appearances. Those are only things Fools Golding and Senter talk about but not things that they can actually make happen. So let's just continue to support a losing basketball program like we've always supported a losing football program.

Because that's all we deserve as UTEP fans.

They are an average team in a conference full of average teams. NMSU just beat JSU on the road. Liberty's probably the best on paper and the Miners beat them on the road. Golding will need these players focused and playing their best for the conference tourney. He needs to win it or I'm ready to move on; this team is too inconsistent.

You should go to the games and tell him in person.

They were close last last year, when nobody thought they would go to the championship game. I really think there is a chance again this year.

Agreed. This is an average team. Not great, not mediocre, not bad. Just average.

This team will exceed 20 wins this season. Golding isn’t going anywhere so cry harder

I mean there’s always a chance, this team wasn’t getting an at large after the SJSu loss anyway. The problem is the lack of consistency - we can beat any team in conference on any given night, but we can also lose to any team on any given night. Can the team keep it together to win three or four straight? We haven’t won three straight in conference all season.

I agree. Up and coming P5 assistant that can recruit and learned under a proven coach.

Is this acceptable to you? Pile up a bunch of wins with a weak OOC schedule, and finish around .500 in a mediocre conference, to win around 20 games? Are your expectations for Miner athletics so low that you don't care if we don't have a good team? You might be right, Senter may well keep him around, touting a meaningless win total. If that happens it will be a mistake, and I'll continue to be unhappy. Meanwhile you'll continue to celebrate next year's wins over non D1 teams that the rest of us expect to beat.

MinerManiac is 100% right. The issue is that there are a few on here that are ok with mediocrity in a bad league. 20 wins and going nowhere post season is reason to celebrate for them. Piling up the wins against weak team OOC and going close to .500 in a bad league is reason to celebrate.

Have the expectations gone that low? How fun is it to watch the Miners play like this every single year, and know you are going nowhere at the end of the season. How great is it going to be, when we are at the bottom of the MWC and being below .500 because the team has been playing in a weak conference. Are we still supposed to be happy that changes aren't made.

This team is not a good team. They are extremely inconsistent. You do not know what you are going to get out of them game to game. That is a terrible formula for winning and it comes down to coaching. The coach has to take the blame for the team not being ready to play. If you look at the good teams they may get upset now and then, but they consistently win at home and split on the road to good teams. If they lose, it is a tough hard game that is close, rarely do they get blown out.

You cannot count on the Miners doing that as you do not know what team is going to show up. I cannot see how it will be possible to win 3 straight games in the CUSA tournament with the way they have played all season. There is no blueprint for it. How can you explain going on the road and winning at Liberty and FIU (after a huge blowout loss at home), then coming home and blowing another one. Then winning at home by the skin of their teeth, and promptly losing 2 more road games. There is no consistency.

Those few posters jumping up and down because most were complaining how we lost to NMSU at home. Then boasting about the 2 road wins as if we won the championship had forgotten about all the previous years and their pattern, which reared its head right after that road trip.

It is sad what UTEP basketball has become. I really never thought I would see this in my lifetime. Years and years of great success, NCAA tournament's, NIT's and great expectations in much tougher conferences against far better teams, and then to have fallen to losing to weak teams in a bottom feeder conference with a piss poor OOC schedule, and having absolutely no expectations of going anywhere by the middle of the season is beyond belief.

What those few posters don't understand is that you can still be a great fan by cheering on the team, but the team and athletic department has to also be fair to the fans by putting the best product they can on the court. Can you really say that Bronzing and the team is the best product that they can offer us? No one wants the Miners to lose, but what they want are changes that give us a better opportunity to win. Staying the same, and not making changes is not going to ever put us in a position to do anything different than what we are seeing, and that is not fair to the fans.

Typical troll post of mega troll MinerManiac. Obviously forgetting about the big wins this team has had this season. An absolutely huge win over Yale! An absolutely massive win over LaTech! Who can forget the great road win over Liberty? They beat Kansas St you know! Just recently, the Miners won at CUSA powerhouse NMSU in a thrilling game!

Fans of this school hate seasons with single digit losses. Double digit losses are the way to go!

I don’t understand the fans who want him back next year. This is a senior laden team most of whom have multiple years in Golding’s system - if it was ever going to come together it was going to be this year. With how the roster is set up I can’t imagine next year will be any better.

Not to mention the fact that the way the team is playing right now, 20 wins isn't exactly a guarantee.
