Golding and Coaching Contract

Welp! Not a chance without a Conf USA tournament championship UTEP even allows Joe Golding to coach on his last year without an extension. Since we know the extension is not coming , it’s time to start looking at who is going to take this team into the MWC.

Unfortunately will probably lose some of this group with a coaching change, but in today’s world if UTEP as an institution commits to basketball you can build it quick. I just don’t think UTEP would take a risk on a younger coach going to a new conference so look for a veteran coach.

Time to start throwing the coaching names out there isn’t it ? 🤦‍♂️

We’ll have lots of time to talk about this next week, but even if UTEP hires a Gregg Marshall type of coach, we don’t have the resources to consistently compete with UNM, Nevada, and Grand Canyon.

UTEP’s best chance of success is hiring a first time coach working as an assistant right now.

Absolutely correct. I just doubt they are going to take a riskier approach when they have to make a mark in a new conference.

It’s ending very badly , but there is no other way to go other then in a new direction barring any miracle in the conf tourney . Golding cannot coach on his last year without an extension in place, pretty standard

I vote Chris Lowery. Has head coaching experience (his Salukis beat Sadler's NCAA Tourney UTEP team), but he has been an assistant at various schools since 2012.

He was brought to Northwestern in 2022 as a defensive specialist to install his system, and it immediately paid dividends with NU making the NCAA Tourney each of the last two seasons with an elite defense.

We all know Senter prioritizes head coaching experience. I actually agree with that approach, but it all depends on who applies. I mentioned I liked the Hooten hire by NMSU. With the move to MWC, UTEP should be able to attract a successful coach from a CUSA level conference. The problem is that Senter is the guy hiring.

Believe it or not UTEP is going to be a huge opportunity for a coach. Especially looking at a team making its way to the MWC. UTEP as an institution and is as fans have to put our money where our mouth is and yes bring in an experienced leader. The names are going to apply.

I'd say Terrell and maybe Camper, with the extra year. Not exactly what Terry left Golding, right? If the new coach can't bring better guys in year one, we already know he is not the answer.

If I remember correctly he played a part in getting Teddy Allan to nmsu.
Ok state is a different story with lunz as HC.

I was pulling for CJG through last year, and knowing he’d be here no matter what this year, I continued to pull for him. CJG is a good guy I believe. I like to see good guys do well. Too bad it didn’t work out.

He's just negative about everything and is happy when UTEP fails so he can say "I told you so". He wouldn't be posting if UTEP was in 1st place right now.

Yep, it sure would be nice. Even if we were Top 3 in the conference he wouldn't be here. Of course if UTEP is 6-6 and goes to a bowl game, he will just whine and moan how UTEP is going to a sucky bowl game. If UTEP wins, then he will say they won a sucky bowl and it's nothing to be proud of. Count on it!

A little more than half, but while I see your point I think you’re wrong on the pay of the next coach. If Golding is let go then I so think Utep at least sniffs close to or right at 1mil for the next coach. The reason for this shift from past hires is due to the realization of what’s necessary to be competitive in the MWC. Also knowing that Utep will be making more money will alter what Utep can offer as well.
