It's Sunday morning....

Recruiting is about relationships. They left a FCS school to be part of a FBS program. Not the reverse. If you think El Paso “sucks”, I bet it 1000x better than their little city in Tennessee. “Gotta go to Nashville for that there buddy”.
Of course it's about relationships, that's my exact point. I'm sure plenty of those players right off a conference championship could have gone places including some other FBS programs, but instead chose to follow their coach to UTEP. You certainly aren't going to go to a losing FBS program just to say you can if you don't think that coach can develop your talent even further. BTW, I never said El Paso sucks or even insinuated it. I know reading is hard.

I don't like our offensive scheme. Every running play is a de factor draw play. We allow the defense to get 5 yards into the backfield before we hand the ball off. Counter intuitive.
Better than what we've had the past 10 years....run, run, pass, punt!

GO MINERS

Again, you’re acting like these guys left UT to come to UTEP. They left FCS for FBS and a small city for a big city. 2 upgrades because of their coach. Not necessarily because they think he is a great coach. Only that they’re improving their situation.

Not even mentioning the better facilities, crowds, and television opportunities they have now by following Sucky Walden. I guess you’re just a Sucky Walden D-rider since you’re ignorant to why the Austin Peay players would come here.

You think that many followed him to a perennial losing UTEP program if he's a bad coach just for better facilities and games on ESPN+ in the mountain time zone. His coaching acumen is exactly why they came here. I'm sure other FBS programs would have taken a number of them as conference champions, or they could have stayed at AP to run it back, but they chose UTEP because of Walden and the fact that he can coach. Oh yeah, and since you want to go there, nice name calling little man.

I was looking at Waldens past. At Austin Peay he started 0-4, and he did improve that year. It was during the covid year. So maybe we need to be patient???

Some people in here are calling for patience. I think it's hard to give patience when Walden chased off 40 and brought in 40. Dimel did have some talent here and the cupboards weren't bare. I wonder if Walden replaced last year's talent with lesser talent from FCS. I'm not saying it's true but I do wonder.
Walden did not chase off 40 players the majority of them left before he was even hired

I mean, this team sucked the past 2 games, and he may end of being a failed hire, but to pronounce so after two games is just ridiculous. We'll have a better idea at the end of this season and a real good idea after next season whether this program is trending in the right direction.

It wasn’t too long ago that it was considered premature to pronounce a coach a failed hire after two years on the job. Crazy that some are doing that after just two games.

They really sucked on the 2nd half of games. They did do well in the first half's of both games. I do think Walden will turn it around just by showing how hard they worked this summer in recruiting. Walden worked really hard for that sell out. No other first year coaches got 41k in the stands. Does anyone know the attendance for the past coaches in their first game? Walden has been out there working hard and Im confident that he will figure it out . To win in college football you have to win the recruiting battles and Walden and company has been doing that lately.

But as for the attendance. That's not the coaches responsibility it is El Paso's, and Miner fans. If El Paso wants a big time program the fans need to show up win or lose. Fans cant be complaining about the programs failures if they don't show up. It's like in politics you can't be complaining if you don't go out and vote.

Damn, is that really you Fili? You finally wrote something that made sense. I
IF FILI CAN DO THAT THERES HOPE FOR UTEP. I’m almost tempted to change my prediction!

Well said.

To Coach Walden and the players he brought to UTEP, welcome to D1 football. The speed of the game is different. It seems that all the penalties against Southern Utah were because they haven't caught up yet. The game hasn't slowed down for them yet, as the saying goes. The test is to see if Walden can coach them up to play at this level. No, the Miners aren't going to whip the world in their first season, but we should look to see noticeable improvement as the season goes on. And the fans should remember that this is one of the tougher schedules we've had in several seasons. Us fans should see players and coaches successfully adapt to the style of play they are lining up against every week. If that happens, the Miners will find success. If not, we'll find bitching and moaning on this website. So Go Miners.

There is no excuses for Saturdays second half performance. Those were elementary school 1st year football mistakes. It was embarrassing.

Second, yes you need to establish a run game but you need to pass to keep them honest. SUU blitzed every down in the second half and not once did UTEP make them pay. And you don't have to chuck it 30 -40 yards.

This was Dimel football Saturday.

And what has that done for our program? UTEP has had the highest conference attendance (or close too it) in football and basketball for years.
The loss Saturday was just another in a long line of failures within UTEP athletics. I didn't expect a winning season this year, but come on.

UTEP is a fledgling in the new world of athletics. A poor school in a low level conference in a community full of distrust. The time to move forward was missed 15-20 years ago. UTEP is not even a stepping stone anymore.

Attendance will not help. Attendance is nice, but it's intended to come with wins. I think we all know that only money will bring wins now, and we don't have enough.

Case in point - NIU had under 11k for their home opener and then went on the road and beat Notre Dame.

Attendance only helps Jim Senter and UTEP’s ability to be more profitable.

But to be fair NIU has stuck with their coach for the last 6 years. He’s gone 5-7, 0-6, 9-5, 3-9 and 7-6 prior to this season. I’m sure if you asked NIU fans about where they felt the program was trending in 2020 following an 0-6 campaign or in 2022 after finishing 3-9 I don’t think they would have thought a win vs ND would have been possible. We’re still way too early and Walden and his staff have to show they can adapt and overcome.

Attendance helps Utep look like a big program. The schools in the bigger conferences have good attendance win or lose. It gives the school more money to hire a better coach.

In my opinion, it would take a university president who holds the AD accountable, and AD who hires the correct coaches and fires them them when required. As you mentioned, the fans come with winning, and money can always help. However, this past Saturday, over 40K fans showed up in an act of blind faith (which Walden alluded to), but once again, UTEP did not hold up their end of the bargain.

While it is no longer valid to compare UTEP to say UNM, UTSA, or Texas St, it is fair to compare them to NMSU. If UTEP had been able to duplicate NMSU's success over the past 10 years, we likely wouldn't be having this discussion. It's super frustrating to the dwindling number of die hard fans that still remain. UTEP's lack of success over the past 10-20 years has resulted in a void of true die hard fans/supporters/boosters for the next generations. The old guys, like myself, are fading away.

In terms of what the casual fan/supporter can do to "demand" change, I think we can agree the impact is minimal. With NIL funding, I was hoping for some changes, but that was false hope. Pretty much a guy like Senter (like Stull before him), will be at UTEP until he decides to retire. By that time, UTEP will probably be looking up at UTRGV. 🤪

Doesn't attendance also help with recruiting? If a recruit comes in on a visit, maybe a full stadium will help more than a empty stadium?

Yes, it does.

But once again, the attendance is going to drop tremendously because for whatever reason, Coach Scotty went "Full Dimel" in the second half and as fans all over X were saying this past weekend, "UTEP lost to an average FCS team".

Wilson is going to high five, do push up's, walk locked arm to arm to the Sun Bowl with the team and staff for the next four games but the damage is done. Not until Senter's agent sets up a meeting with Wilson and her staff, which I presume is already happening, will she act like an AD wanting a strong athletic program and act like a "university president who holds the AD accountable, and AD who hires the correct coaches and fires them them when required". Until then and like the last 15 years, SOP.

She asked the county for money. She has been accepting of millions of dollars in DHC and SB upgrades, albiet, nothing game changing. So on and so forth. But for seven and eight years, UTEP has coaches who overachieve just to be mediocre at best. The salesmanship is top notch, however. Mike Price would be proud.

Give me ranch, Caesar and extra croutons for this turd infested word salad that was posted on Digs on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Posts like this is why UTEP admins don’t give a shit about athletics. Most UTEP fans like our friend here continue to chug the kool-aid pitcher and won’t hold anyone accountable for the recent mess Gymnasium Center has created.

“Quality recruiting class” “Spitting Facts” LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Brennan Marion woulda never lost to an FCS team or brought in an FCS level roster.

Talk to yall in November for Golding ball.

Smallwood are you slow stupid or dumb???? At what point in this did I state I was ok with the loss to an FCS School??? Please answer that first off? I’m not drinking any Kool Aid!!! Idk about you, but I’ve been a suffering Miner Fan since about 1986 when I can remember my 1st game. You got the wrong guy if you think I’m one to not give it to this University straight!!!! Fact is it’s Walden’s 2nd game so people calling for his firing are smoking!!!! That’s all I was saying. It’s a real bad look to lose to an FCS I literally acknowledged that!!! I also have said Senter should go, but I’m not giving up on Walden 2 games in!!! Did I lie about a top recruiting class in CUSA who would be expected to contribute more next year?? Find the lie, please!!!! Based on your Idiot response we should what Fire Walden after game 2, Fire Senter, Fire Wilson, get rid of all athletics, close down UTEP as a University all together!!?!!! Exactly what would you like to do Smallwood!!!! You literally are on Shrooms or something right now lol

Again, attendance does not matter. Their 11k is normal for them. They can still win 9 games, beat Notre Dame, and go to the Orange Bowl. UTEP can’t do any of that and they just had 41k for their home game.

I'm glad we are tracking on this Senter thing, 2Step. For my part, I offer to organize a heist of Moccia's playbook on running a successful D1 athletic department (on a budget). We just need to make sure to not grab the version that was confiscated by the authorities. I'm still looking for a good wheel man. 😀

That's what I'm saying if Utep/ El Paso wants to be taken seriously they need to fill that stadium , win or lose. I was looking at schools like Kentucky and Vanderbilt . They don't win in football and their stadiums are still packed. Yes they are playing better competition but I think if Utep wants to move out of CUSA we have to look the part. Utep isn't winning but hey look they still packing the stadium. Same thing with basketball.

Rice, UAB, and FAU didn’t pack their stadiums and they still moved. Look at SMU, they’d be lucky to get 20,000 for any football game or 4,000 for any basketball game and they’re in the ACC. Attendance doesn’t mean shit!!!!!!!!!!!

I think we’re making two separate points. I’m not arguing that attendance means anything either. I’m saying NIU and its fans have stuck by that coach through a couple of rough patches.

The administration stuck by him. Last year, their best attended game had 13k and they had 2 games under 7k. So fans didn’t stick by him either.

I don’t think people realize that a kid will play in an empty stadium if they got $500 more in NIL money

They don’t care if there’s 40k. They can play in front of 5,000 people at FIU and be happy. Did the defense try stopping the run better on Saturday? Nope.

Pretty much UTEP plays worse when they have big crowds.

And that’s what really matters in today’s collegiate athletics. It’s not about selling out stadiums, large athletic budgets, fancy locker rooms and facilities, indoor practice fields, LED lights, Instagram followers, yada yada yada.

All that matters to today’s college athlete is how much NIL money they can get. It’s all about getting PAID!

Sad but true, they sh!t the bed... Never fails, it would be nice for them to rise to the occasion, you know on occasion...

If attendance doesn't mean anything why its always being brought up here?
.So you saying if representatives from Mountain West ,Big 12 , or Pac 12 came to visit Utep and they saw a packed Sun Bowl or Haskins center it wouldn't be a positive for Utep?

The problem with NMSU, and all of New Mexico for that matter, is for every one Walter White that state is crawling with 30 "Tuco's" to get you in trouble. Sorry for the Breaking Bad comparison but fed agents have told me NM is crazy.

Mario is a good with selling the product, but he is a source of the problem, just like WW and in which the lawsuit will bear out.

Because those are the only banners that UTEP can hang. It’s never championships or big wins. It’s always “We got 41k for Southern Utah!!!”

Yes, it would be a positive because it’s better than 2,000 people being there. The MWC isn’t going to add UTEP because of attendance though. UTEP will be added once they add value to a conference.
