Kap's ESPN600 show is going to be busy today

The writing was on the wall. Every school is looking out for themselves at this point.

With Marshall gone maybe UTEP and LT have enough influence to invite NMSU. SHSU and or ACU should also be on the short list if they're ready.

Worst part is, still stretches from El Paso to Miami to Norfolk.

Stick together. that would be another $6 mill, bringing it to $24m. That's a good chunk for a handful of teams. Make it work. The options suck.

The only hope Utep has right now is cusa to add NMSU and Liberty. Definitely not ideal but that looks like the best option right now. Yikes!

Youre right. Aren't you the one with the hookup to these stories?
I did see the rumor but I didn't want to believe it. Sun Belt has come along way and it looks a lot better. Marshall is a great add and Southern Miss is okay but fit geographically.

If Marshall's administration has the same feelings as their fans, NMSU is a non-starter. The fans are adamantly opposed to any more western teams and they'd rather blow up CUSA than go down that path. The best option is likely that we're the crazy outlier in an eastern CUSA.

Sorry if I have you confused with someone else. I thought you were a subscriber to the Athletic. If you are could you tell us what teams are mentioned as possible candidates. I would imagine it's USM, Marshall, ODU and JMU....

What’s left of Conference USA?

While those in Conference USA knew they could lose other members to the AAC, to see six take steps toward leaving at once was a gut punch. In particular, North Texas president Neal Smatresk, who signed the letter sent to the AAC about a conversation on geographic restructuring last week, is the chair of the C-USA board of directors.

The conference was a bit bloated at 14 members already, but the remaining eight still face geographic problems, especially UTEP, Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss.

Conference USA hopes to get back to 10 teams and has had conversations with potential additions like James Madison and Liberty, but that could depend on what happens elsewhere. If the Sun Belt targets Conference USA teams, it would put C-USA in a tenuous position, and schools like JMU and Liberty don’t want to sign up for C-USA without know what’ll be left. C-USA has passed on Liberty in the past for those political and financial reasons mentioned above, but would the league now be more willing to take the Flames?

Could anything else happen elsewhere?

There have been whispers the MAC is looking at options. It always makes sense to observe the landscape, and if Conference USA blows up, perhaps the MAC could add some of the leftovers. The MAC has had eastern members like UCF, Marshall, Temple and UMass in the past, but it is now geographically tight with similarly minded schools and budgets.

The chain reaction started by Texas and Oklahoma is ongoing, and the mood among most administrators is frustration that it reached this point, with Group of 5 conferences raiding each other again. But schools have to look out for themselves and make the best move possible. In wake of the AAC’s planned additions, reaction should come quickly.

Thank you!

Should also be noted, that now the Texas schools are leaving, the CUSA Tournament would not remain in Frisco. It would definitely be moved further east. Which makes it worse for UTEP fans.

Also, the next TV contract will be absolutely worthless without Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Birmingham, and Charlotte. This is another reason why teams are trying to leave.

And this is only if CUSA somehow keeps their remaining 8 teams!

Big Sky, Southland, and WAC would probably take UTEP. Missouri Valley is a long shot. Only because they considered GCU and UTA recently. Big West and WCC are absolutely not happening.

MTSU is possible to the MAC only. WKU could go either way
The MAC is a pretty tight midwestern conference. They may be perfectly happy at 12.
Hopefully if the SBC expands they only go to 12. That would leave 6 schools in CUSA,

UTEP, ODU, WKU, MT, FIU, LT

Since going indy means a much smaller share of cfp money and finding a home for non football sports, I would think they could find 2 schools anxious to be in an fbs conference. So survival is the name of the game for CUSA and it's immediate future.

JMU and Liberty might still be interested and maybe NMSU. Its not a matter anymore who we want but who we can get. Any school joining would want in writing a specific time frame that current CUSA schools would guarantee they would remain.

I honestly think it's going to be down to

UTEP
LT
MTSU
WKU
FIU
With JMU out of the picture. And Liberty probably too.

LT they get left behind for talking shit

MTSU/WKU/FIU for leaving the SB. Payback is a b*tch

UTEP cuz of our bad athletic history and out of their footprint.

At that point NMSU is in. We're up to 6. We need to find two fcs teams that are ready to move up now. My suggestion SHSU and Jackson St.

So Thamel is saying both the SBC and CUSA are talking to James Madison. Gee, I wonder which one they will pick??

C-USA has met the destiny of its own creation. C-USA is DEAD. No school is going to join C-USA. C-USA is going to lose Marshall, MTSU, and ODWho? at a minimum to the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt will also likely add James Madison.

C-USA is DEAD.

The funny thing is that aside from FIU. LT, WKU, and MTSU were the strongest teams CUSA added. Every other team that CUSA was shitted on for adding is moving to a better place.

Marshall fans are super funny. They're trying to blame their move to the SB cuz UTEP is pushing for schools around us instead of eastern schools. As if there are any schools around us or we have the backing of anyone else left in the conference. If that's true I never knew how influential we are.

I don’t see why they would need anyone’s thoughts on how or why. You’re right, no one nearby could be added and if there was, why the **** would they join? If you’re the AD at Texas St, you wouldn’t leave the SBC for some temporary cash the CUSA leftovers might get.

Everyone should look out for themselves. No need to worry about another school.

As of right now, the glass is half full. My gawd, some very, very competitive good programs are still in CUSA. I say keep it together and add Liberty and "f" the rest of them. My gawd, this really doesn't look that bad other than the travel costs.

CUSA just needs to tell, more like slap, ODU and Marshall to get off their high horse. No body wants you guys. Go ahead and let them pick their travel partner and strengthen the brand. UAB is the biggest loss and it's nothing like losing Memphis a few years back (that was big blow). Replace UAB with NMSU for basketball for pete's sake if you need to strengthen scheduling.
I’m still holding out hope we can go to the MWC. That would be the best of all worlds

It would be great. I think the Big two want nothing to do with UTEP. The bigger problem is there is no way three presidents from Cal State institutions are voting to admit a school whose president worked in the Trump administration. There are other barriers but to me that's the one that can't be rectified.

Have they actually said that or is that something just believe to be the case?

Educated guess based on how the Cal State system operates and level of activism the regents display. I don't think Wilson's past employment would be an issue in any other conference. I don't think it's an issue outside those three schools. What I know about the Cal State system I dont think there is any way those three presidents vote for us as long as Wilson is the president. Like I said there are many other objections you would have to get past to get to a vote. I just think by miracle if it got to a vote there is no way those three will vote yes while Wilson is president.

Well if that’s true it’s a real shame.

Nope. She was not a Trumpist and career military but Trump stayed respectful of her departure, publicly at least. He made her retirement decision that much easier and the UTEP job was new path she wanted.
