Keith Sullivan signs!

Keith Sullivan in a suprise has signed with UTEP. He picked UTEP over Texas tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Boise State. He's 6'7 250 lb de runs a 4.7. He will make an immediate impact. Huge get for Kugs. Best recruit at UTEP in the past decade.
Needs work. Over use of arm tackling and needs muscle but good frame.

My take from watching highlights:

Upside: He played in one of the top districts in Texas, so he's seen primo competition; he's got what you can't teach and everybody wants - size, body frame, and pretty good motor for a big man.

Downside: If he runs a 4.7 40, I run a 4.5. Don't see him at DE at D1 level except in a 3-4 base. Raw, defeats most plays exclusively via size. I could definitely seen him shifted to OT. Good get for
UTEP but a major project.

BTW, notice what types of offenses most of the opposition is running in this video? Mostly read-option, pistol, or some variation thereof. Clue...

Yeah, I agree with Jdubb and LaserCoog on this one. Glad to have him, but I think that we are looking at more of a project. That being said, it's good to mix in a few high-ceiling projects into your Class each year, especially when that project is a 6'7" lineman.

Who's not a project? What I like is that Kug and his staff went coast to coast & Minot to Laredo.

No you don't.

BTW, only 2 Defensive Lineman ran faster than 4.7 at last years NFL Combine.

He is not best recruit in a decade. He is maybe kuglars best recruit since he has been here. Mike Price has had some good recruits.

I believe Brandis Dew and Marcus Thomas were the highest rated recruits in the Price era. Dew came here because utep was the only school that would let him play qb. His career was ended prematurely by a neck injury.

Marcus Thomas was also highly rated coming out of Arizona. He was a four star recruit coming out of high school commited to Arizona but didnt qualify. He sat out a year then signed with UTEP at the time rivals and scout had both downgraded him to a two star recruit.

In my opinion Sullivan is a better prospect than either Dew or Thomas were. Only time will tell but I think Sullivan will be special.

Braxton amy
Jordan Leslie
Donald buckram
Fred rouse but he was a transfer

Mike wasnt the best coach but i think he is much better recuiter tham kuglar at the moment. I believe this is kuglars first rivals 3 star recruit?

Like the kid, don't know if he'll make an immediate impact, yet nothing wrong with being a project. J.J. Watt was a 2 star out of high school, signed with mighty Central Michigan as a tight end. Other visits were to Colorado and Minnesota. Played one year at tight end, transferred to Wisconsin with the intent of continuing as a tight end, and look how that turned out. Projects aren't all bad. This kid looks like he'll work out.

but gotta give kugler and staff some credit looks like they did a good job recruiting. Yeah they didnt get those 3 stars or 4 stars but they got some players that had offers by some good schools. Thats a good start. Looks the new coaches did a good job at short time. Would like to see how they do in a full season.

Serious question because I'm not there to watch, but was El Paso football that good this year that we take 7 commits? Seems like a high number from the past classes.

Really? So Kugler gets a participation ribbon for finishing last in C-USA recruiting for the fourth consecutive year? Spin it any way you want but those are the facts.

BTW, brief glance at recruit videos, couple of guys I like are the running back from Kennedale and the safety from Crosby.

There are 14 teams in CUSA and Rivals ranks UTEP's Class as the 6th best in CUSA. Here is the link:

If this was 15+ years ago I would be worried, but El Paso football has changed so much. These El Paso teams are winning versus out of town teams so there are athletes here in El Paso. If you look at the size of the linemen Kugler recruited they're in the same range as all the others minus Sullivan.

Some of the best players on the team currently are local guys. The two Jones brothers, Elmendorf, Kavika, Redix, Freytag. El Paso football has grown over the past decade to the point where they are making deep runs in the state playoffs.

Bullitt, Johnson, Rodriguez and Foster are all very good players and legit d1 prospects. Torrez, ortega and Deharo most analyst would call reaches. However, I trust Kuglers evaluations. Most of the local kids who looked like reaches in the past have contributed and played early. Alvin Jones, and Warren reddix are prime examples. Both looked liked reaches yet played early and became stars. Alvin turned out to be the most talented Jones brother. He will the highest drafted utep player since the late great thomas howard. I trust Kuglar's evaluations.

In addition, the local teams are going to 7 on 7 tournaments in east Texas and winning them, in some cases blowout wins. I know it's not really the same but athleticism and speed are big components of 7 on 7 football.
