I'm not an avid listener, and talking horse racing, or some gambling site bores me, but I get it, they need to be broad based so that's fine, just not for me.
The last 2 weeks all I hear relative to UTEP is NIL and how the game has changed. It sounds like they are talking about how the old model of recruiting has changed and now its all about NIL $, which I don't dispute and I don't think most listeners dispute either.
But then they start talking about Cooper Flagg having a high powered agent or how Donovan Dent is getting $2.3M at UCLA and its 4 times UTEP's NIL, or even that reserves at P4 schools are getting $300k. What does that have to do with anything at UTEP? As if UTEP is battling Jon Scheyer for recruits?

That's like me telling my wife we cant go to dinner because Jeff Bezos is having dinner in Ibiza, Spain; so its too expensive.

So NIL is hampering recruiting at UTEP? Then don't bring up Malachi Nelson or football having the top class in the conference last 2 years, because, well you know NIL money. Walden is just lucky I guess.
I recall last year them boasting that UTEP kept the nucleus of the team because of NIL, but now its really really hard because of NIL.

We are not losing Terrell, Bynum, Hamilton and Barnes to Kansas, UCLA, Auburn or Michigan - they are being pursued by Tarleton State, NJIT, UTSA and Indiana-Fort Wayne.
Mbengue will probably end up D2 or NAIA.
I don't expect to see UTEP compete with Purdue, Wake Forest, Colorado or BYU for recruits, but when I see guys committing to Western Kentucky, Wyoming, NMSU or Texas State - and not a whiff about any visits or commitments from UTEP while needing 10 more guys, then there's a major problem.

And that problem is not NIL - if Golding can't recruit in this new world, then he shouldn't be a Head Coach in this new world. I haven't heard Golding offer to return half his paycheck, so he likes the income, and competing for championships is the expectation? At least I thought Senter said it was.

I really enjoy an hour long discussion about Adrian's new hairdo, but that's just me. 😉

Can't stand Adrian....would think someone as young as him "new blood" would focus on these points but nooooooooooooo

They are definitely just making (poor) excuses for Golding. He can't recruit. He never developed it at Abilene Christian and it has been exposed at UTEP. That's the bottom line. Our NIL is near the top half of CUSA, but those aren't the results we are getting. Walden is putting together #1 classes with the same amount of resources that Golding has.

Call him up and tell him. He will let you vent or challenge his thoughts. He won’t ignore you and move on like Teicher would.

It’s gotten to the point where, I seldom listen. I guess they have to fill time, so they talk about who saw what movies, hairstyles, their vacation. Like anyone gives a crap about their personal lives.
If they don’t have enough sports to talk about, shorten the show.
Never have respected Kapppy, after he was extremely rude to my wife at a UTEP game.
I believe he was giving tickets away to the next game, I let my wife out close to the entrance and went to go park.
He refused to give her the tickets, said they were for someone else. She questioned why he was promoting it on the radio if he didn’t have the tickets. Wouldn’t answer.

Not with Golding as HC. You're basically throwing money into guys that don't deserve high NIL value.
I’ve mentioned it before, but he’s recruiting like he did at Abilene C. and that won’t work in CUSA and it sure as Heck won’t work in MWC. If this team was in the WAC or Southland or something like that they could rack up wins and confidence in route to challenging for a conference championship. He has not upgraded in anyway his recruiting since he’s been here. Walden goes after kids that usually wouldn’t choose Utep. However Golding goes after guys where Utep is probably their best option compared to the other schools recruiting them SMH 🤦🏽

I don’t disagree that NIL money rules everything now. But let’s not act like UTEP can’t get anyone. There are only so many NIL spots, and every year players are trying to transfer and new players are coming from high school. So there are only so many spots to get paid. So players are going to fall through the cracks. NIL or not you need a coach who can identify those players and get them.

I've never been a fan of him. He just doesn't really seem really knowledable about sports. I remember about 10 years ago talking to him at an event about sports and a little bit about El Paso sports history and he has no clue what I was talking about. Every time I see him he seems arrogant and thinks he's better than everybody else.

Know him personally and these are all fabricated lies. He is knowledgeable of sports just because you may not agree with his takes. He’s not arrogant and is actually a down to earth good family man. Talk about the show all you want, but don’t make up crap when you don’t know the man! That’s some weak crap.

I never said anything about disagreeing or agreeing with his opinions.

He's not knowledgeable in my experience. When I say that, I mean he isn't more knowledgable than the average sports fan. I've talked with a few other people and they have shared similar encounters. He may seem knowledgable on air because information is fed to him, but off air (at least in my experience and other experiences that were shared with me), not so much.

It's probably the same with a lot of these on air personalities. They probably don't know much off air.

good family man

I never said he wasn't.

I thought I was the only person thinking this, until I talked to others and they all say the same thing.
What a dumbshit you are 666 Kap has more knowledge about sports in this town especially UTEP Basketball he was like an adopted son to Haskins spent more time with him than anybody would know because of Steve we got to here some of the greatest sports stories ever told in this town. Because of his relationship Haskins allowed him to bring into our world very personal conversations with some of the greatest coaches to ever coach Knight Majurus Nolan Bum Philips and dozens of others. That’s just a tiny sample of his first hand education crap since Billy left at all his stops Billy has always stayed close to him he has more knowledge in his left pinky than your punk ass has in that small deteriorated old brain of yours.

I don’t know Steve personally but what he gives to the El Paso Sports scene is irreplaceable.

Stay off the personal shots you sound like you have an agenda and if you are going to be that personal show your self to him and say it to his face he doesn’t seem like a fighter but for sure he would bitch slap your old man grumpy ass.

What a dumbshit you are

Thanks!

That's funny that you say that because I tried talking to him about El Paso sports history and he had no clue what I was talking about.

Thanks again!

Stay off the personal shots

No thanks

sound like you have an agenda

Damn, you got me and you figured out my "agenda". ;)

I have, in so many words. He probably didn't get it.

I’m sure Steve doesn’t engage every person he talks to in sports talk it would never end I do know this he knows everything that’s goes on in UTEP sports he talks to old coaches tide in to the program still and current players and of course his circle are all in the the program.

He plays dumb on the program maybe will throw a nugget out there to get an conversation going but make no mistake about it he knows everything that’s going on including the extension he just can’t get on his program and say anything that wouldn’t go well.

You make it seem like he is bombarded with fans everywhere he goes. LOL I'm talked to him a few times over the years. It's not that diffcult to have a conversation with him.

And your point is? That's his job. I am talking about sports as a whole, not just UTEP.
He plays dumb on the program

lol What??? Why would he play dumb? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

he knows everything that’s going on including the extension

Proof?
he just can’t get on his program and say anything that wouldn’t go well.

What do you mean by this?

His sources/insiders would be pissed that he’s passing along inside information to audience he could but the trust he’s built with these people over the last thirty years would be gone. It only takes once.

He talks but to his trusted friends

So what is the point of having sources/insiders, if you can't talk about it?

Who are these sources/insiders?

Your comments make absolutely no sense.

It's funny that you say you don't know Steve persoanlly, but yet you somehow know so much about him.

Steve runs a sports talk show. He is not an investigative reporter anymore. Therefore it is his not his job to break the news but rather to talk about local sports. He doesn’t in fact know a lot of inside information. Some of which he tells me, but I can’t say either if he tells me not to. That is called journalistic integrity. He speaks with Utep coaches and the AD on sport talk. If he leaked info they tell him, they wouldn’t appear on his show.

I love these people who post on here who think they're "special" getting "inside information".

This all sounds like a group of high school girls who gossip, who think they're cool and try to keep others away about knowing about what they are gossiping about.

So I guess nobody told @Tstix not to talk about "inside information"?

My question still remains. Why does UTEP leak information to a sports media personality, if he can't talk about it on air? What does Steve, or any of you "insiders" have to gain, by knowing this "inside information"?
