KROD SportsTalk - Please stop

They were talking on the Show Yesterday about a recruit Joe Golding was showing around El Paso.

They dropped some great nuggets like, "We can't tell you his name but he's from the East Coast." There are "several others that we are not at liberty to talk about." They did say, "We can tell you about Frank Phillips since its been reported by other outlets."

So they can't break any news themselves? Got it. No reason to listen then.

KROD and Kap have evolved into puppets for Senter and his awful athletic department. Never did I hear any objective reporting much less any criticism of that dumpster fire so I quit listening.
They criticize plenty. You have to remember they air their games too. They can’t just roast them all day like you and I.

This is ridiculous. They're a media outlet, not employees of the University. They have every right to reveal the player's name. The reason that they didn't has to be the iron grip that UTEP has over the local media.

Does Utep pay Kappy or are they a sponsor to the station?

For a local station that doesn't have anything else to cover, I would bet, yes.
Utep isn't the only team they cover. There is the Cowboys,NFL, NBA and everything else. Utep isn't their bosses . Where else will Utep go to?? There isn't another radio station.

I mean, I'm sure that's why they don't report stuff like that, because coaches and the administration wouldn't go on there anymore. Considering the reason they know some information is because coaches themselves probably confirm the information, with the understanding that they don't say certain things on air.

I mean, they’re not exactly “covering” UTEP sports as it is now.

I would imagine it would be as big of a loss to UTEP as it would be to any station. I doubt anyone is tuning into said station for its robust coverage of Miner sports. Maybe I’m wrong.

I for one, hope UTEP stays on KROD. I mean, where else will get a complete read of every stat from the game after the game concludes. When UTEP loses, I want to know that UTEP outscored the opponent 14-8 on fast break points as I drive home, but the opponent outscored UTEP on second chance points by 8-6. Plus knowing Hebb was 1-6 from the field, made his only free throw, was 1-4 from 3 point, had 1 rebound, 3 turnovers, 1 steal, and was credited with 1 assist is critical.

In today's world there is no other place I could get this kind of insight. Plus Sal Montes reading scores is super helpful otherwise I would have to wait for the El Paso Times the following morning. I hear people say the World Wide Web will allow us to get this kind of information on our phones, but that's crazy talk, I don't buy it.

Let’s be real here. Fair to say that a large portion of that audience is exiting the game and probably driving to somewhere. They can’t look at their phones will driving right? How long does it take for UTEP to load those stats on the website?

I believe they have time to waste between the end of the game and when Pewter arrives for his post game comments, gotta fill it with something.

If you don’t want stats or other scores from around the country, what kind of content should go in its place?

Spot on. This is why I don't listen.

I would probably listen if they would cover the Locomotive or Chihuahuas, but they don't even do that.

Their show is crap.

I appreciate all the show feedback these last few weeks. Some very good comments were made. I think before last season, I posted here about offering any of you regular posters the opportunity to come on SportsTalk and talk UTEP sports with us. A MinerDigs roundtable. I think it would be interesting to hear from you away from this chat board. Especially the long time commentators. Unfortunately I didn't get many takers. That offer is still on the table. And if you can't stand me personally and/or think my show sucks, I have a microphone waiting for you.

Would Utep allow you to have a roundtable? Maybe you can get some ex players instead of us . You know if you get people from here it will be no good for Senter and Golding. Mostly everyone here wants them gone. All I want to know if Utep controls what you say on the show?

To answer your questions in order:
1. The roundtable was my idea from the beginning and I am not concerned about being "allowed" to do it. If you have ever listened to MinerTalk after games (especially losses), it is full of critical takes. From callers to Twitter/X, and Adrian and the boys.
2. I have had ex players on the show before and some have been critical of the university. Especially when we talked about the school staying in touch with them after they graduate. Many of them are just as passionate and critical as this board.
3. UTEP has no control over what we say on the show. After 30 years, do I have good relationships with some people in the administration and talk "off the record?" Absolutely yes. Those relationships are earned and I'm not about to break that trust. If I did, I would have no insight into the program whatsoever.

I’ve listened to the show twice…maybe 3 times, ever, so I can’t really comment on it or you.

From my limited out-of-towner perspective, what I don’t see, in general, is the hard questions being asked by any media outlets. For instance, we still don’t even know for sure if Golding’s contract was extended, or if he’s just finishing his last year out. Again, I may not be privy to all that goes on, but I haven’t even heard of that question being asked by a reputable media source.

Is UTEP trying to control the narrative such that you can’t publicly ask that question without the threat of being ostracized? If not, why does all info pertaining to UTEP athletics appear to be so vanilla?

Not trying to put you on the spot. Really am curious.

I'd be up for participating in a round table.

I'll be happy to do it when I retire but right now I work for a living. My question to you is why were you so vocal in opposition to Tim Floyd but not as much with Joe? The program is in absolute shambles right now. Where's the anger?
