NCAA Finances: Revenue and Expenses by School

Wow there is a huge jump just between 100th and 50th. We need to be spending about double to keep up with top MWC/AAC schools.

UTEP is 99th; UTSA 98th, UAB 86th, North Texas 76th, FAU 75th, Charlotte 74th. That range is under 41 mil to over 32 mil. It's all about the money, not the wins, not the academics, not the history. Those things are just the tie breakers. The difference between UTSA's revenue and UTEP's is about 150k, but UTEP has higher costs (travel? mismanagement?). We are about the same on paper as UTSA, but market and location gives them the edge.

Texas St. is 84th, man we are cheap bastards! We would be the 5th richest program in the SB, but nobody wants to fly out to the Mountain Time Zone. We need to start pushing for all of the great state of Texas to be in the Central Time Zone....lol! Sun Belt could work for us with UT-Arlington and Texas St.

Interesting that the school with the highest revenue in the conference was left behind. They also have a new stadium and live in the #42 tv ranking.

Did they get left behind or are they the smart ones that didn't want to get in debt?

They'll end up in the SB and help make the SB the best G5 football conference.

One thing you have to keep in mind. UTEP sponsors the bare number of sports needed to be d1. UTSA and Texas State sponsor more sports. We spend more per athlete than they do.

That UNT number is a number we should shoot for.

Thats true.

Since UNT joined FBS they've won 114 games. In that same time period we've won 105.

Some fans support a losing program others make excuses why not to support them.

That's why UNT has money and UTEP doesn't.

UNT also has 4 SBC Titles, a CUSA Division Title, 9 Bowl games, won 2 bowl games. They also destroyed a SEC team in 2018. I didn’t look from 1995-2017 if they have beaten any other P5 teams, but I’m sure they have more.

Can you please compare those to UTEPs accomplishments?

114 wins compared to 105. That's all that matters. They support their team financially we don't.

Also those SB titles are so impressive. They won one with a 5-7 record. Another one where the second best team was 4-8. That's the equivalent of NMSU dominating the old wac but probably worse. One year the SB best team was 6-6 lol.

Looks like UNT supported their team even though they were beating nothing but shitty teams.

They sure do. That year they won the West cusa division they ended their season getting blown out in the CUSA title game then blown out even worse in the bowl game.
How many CUSA championships has UTEP played in? Even with a 7 year head start?

Weve discussed this before, but does UNT have a student fee for athletics? I know UTSA does.

UTEP needs to do this and stop being cheap to try and conform to the El Paso community.

Zero even with all those SB titles and bowl appearances and accolades you mentioned for them, they've only won 9 more games than us.

With the way things are looking for us and them I bet we'll be even by the end of next year.

Our students are way to poor to support athletics with a fee.

The numbers show UNT and UTSA each had around 13 million in student fees. We had 8 million.

I’m mocking a common narrative heard in these parts.
Got it, and I agree.

I checked UNT and it's $16.25 per credit hour up to 15 hrs a semester. So that adds up to potentially 19.5 million a year with their student population.

I don't think the people who cry for $1 hotdogs and $5 tickets are fans.
Nobody is crying for that or saying that should be an every game deal.

You’re telling me some 75 year old guy who isn’t healthy enough to go to the games and only listens on the radio is not a fan?

I'm sure a 75 year old guy who is invested enough to listen to games on the radio has financially supported the program through the years.

The people who want cheap tickets and concessions are different. They don't understand college athletics. They won't support the school financially. They want free shit and they should never be catered to. These people won't donate to the MAC buy season tickets, corporate sponsorships or premium seats. They're not fans.

From someone that once well invested into UTEP Athletics. The way I see it is UTEP Athletics had an opportunity to really make a mark back when we had creeped into the TOP 25 under Price’s early tenure. Nike came around, the fan base was on fire, and UTEP was starting to squeak out some respect.

If you can’t win consistently the brand just doesn’t stay afloat, money dries up, and you have a hard time convincing fans to buy tickets.

North Texas is miles ahead of UTEP right now financially. You can look at their uniform contracts with Nike. 12 football uniform combos alone in a single year.

UTEP Athletics need to change the narrative that we have potential in the next 10 years. If we have no potential on the larger scale we won’t get a damn thing. Does your athletic department have the potential to be the next Boise. The next UTSA. The next , hell even Appalachian State. If they look at you and don’t see it what do we have to offer exactly??? It comes down to what are you going to do for our brand . And if you don’t have the money, a billionaire donor, then you better be a consistent winner. UTEP has none of those going for it at the moment. If UTEP football started the season 10-1 would be even be ranked in the top 35??? Highly unlikely.
