Rollcall UTEP @ UTSA

Yes. Golding still has work to do.

Is this it for the UTSA/UTEP series? They got approved to leave CUSA this year, right?
Nope. The schools going to the AAC are not leaving until 2023, so one more year with UTSA, UNT, Rice, UAB, FAU and Charlotte. It is looking like the SBC bound teams may leave after this season though.

His defense was pretty good. TV never let Germany get going like he did the other night. 4 blocks on the day. Altered several others. But damn, how do you miss an point blank, uncontested layup…let alone 3 of them for the series?
Funny that I was thinking he should have just laid the ball in the basket instead of going for the dunks in the last game. Then, this game, he misses a point blank lay up. Just not a good finisher. But like you mentioned, he was probably as good defensively this game as he was last year at Kansas.

We need a 3 man rotation up front and Golding needs to hit the transfer market HARD!!

If he plays defense like this every night then fine, but 8 minutes for Onyema is not enough. Let's get him up to 15-20 minutes a night. TV is no longer offensive rebounding since we don't have a scoring PF in the paint. Onyema can rebound and finish much better. Let's get them both going.

Once Sibley starts scoring more inside it will open up TV and Onyema more as well.

How about TV at the 4 and Onyema at the 5 while Sibley is out. I'm not sold on Hollins

I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Onyema as well. He's obviously still very raw, but he's getting better on both ends. Again, it's not like Kalu or Maring are significant improvements. I think Hollins provides really the only true option on the team as a wing forward. Against a zone, he is the only guy who can make a mid range jumper. Sibley is still not ready to be a consistent scoring option from the wing or inside. I do like his upside, but it is going to take some time.

Some thoughts on the game experience and the game:

I moved to San Antonio back in June of 2018. Since then I've been to the Miner Football game in 2018 and the basketball games 2019, 2020, and now 2022 (I missed the Football game in 2020 and the basketball game in 2021 due to the pandemic). Until today all of the games I've attended - hell, of the games that have been in San Antonio - have been Miner losses. It's nice to finally witness the team win.

I was foolish. I read that UTSA was limiting the game to 15% capacity. That there would be no online sales, only sales at the Convocation Center ticket window starting an hour before the game. I was actually worried that with those conditions that they might actually run out of tickets, so I arrived an hour early, expecting there to be a line. The parking lot was empty, the Roadrunner band members were the other other people in sight, and I was able to walk right up to the guy behind the ticket window and get my tix. I rushed for nothing.

I unfortunately didn't get to meet any other MinerDigs members, but did have a nice conversation with a Miner fan while we were standing in the concession lime, talking about the 80s Miner teams and players, and how much we miss El Paso Mexican food.

In the other two basketball games that I attended there was a huge Miner contingent that often drowned out the hometown fans. There were certainly Miner fans there, but they weren't as numerous or boisterous as in games past.

It was great to see our defense cause the Roadrunners so much trouble. We had 11 blocks in that game. When is the last time that happened? We also forced turnovers and often had them disoriented on offense. If we had shot well this would have been a blowout.

I kind of feel bad for jumping all over Tydus for that missed layup. After being dominated by Germany on Thursday, both players had 6 points and 4 boards, but Tydus took 7 fewer shots and had 4 blocks to Germany's 1. Two of Tydus's points came when UTSA had cut the lead to 2 or 3 and we needed a bucket to stem the tide. And the play where he missed the layup was only extended because he came up with a key offensive rebound off a missed 3. But damn, it was a wide open layup, set up perfectly by Bienemy.

Others have pointed out that Golding missed on some key players in his first recruiting class, failing to bring in the big man we really need. But in the backcourt Saterfield was a great get. Man that kid can shoot!

I was like Fanatico, not wanting Bienemy to shoot, as the shots were not dropping for him for most of the game. I'm glad that he didn't listen. His clutch shots down the stretch allowed us to maintain our lead and win the game.

All in all I'm just happy that I finally left the Convocation Center with a smile.

Ended up going to the game after all. I am all in on Onyema, but I think I see why he is not a starter yet. There were a few times he was lost on his defensive assignment. Like stuck in no-man's land, looking and not finding a player to guard, lost. The two times I saw that happen, Golding sat him down immediately. Ended up meeting Onyema after the game. A very polite, very nice, young man, excellent example of a UTEP student athlete. Also there is no way he is 6'8". He is listed at 6'8" but he is taller, 6'10" perhaps. He didn't have as much support in the arena as Kobe McGee did, but John Jay HS had a big presence there supporting their player on the visiting team.

UTEP's take time off the clock offense is atrocious. That's why UTSA hung in as much as they did. They play keep away until they are forced to take a bad shot or drive into traffic.
