So nothing from UTEP Basketball for weeks...

I’m a little surprised by the silence around here. Funny how there was plenty of talk when no one was getting signed.
By now, expectations are tempered. Fool me once, shame on you...fool me eleventeen times...

I like what I see, but I'm gonna hold it close to the hip for now. The 6'9" kid standing next to the Lambo looks to be pretty good on film. Had a 30 point game last season...and several 20+ point games. Played about 35 minutes a game, and even 45 minutes in one. Only time he didn't get 35+ was the few times when his team was up by 30-40 points. I guess to get others on the court. Good mid-range game. Plays more like a 3 than a 4, but knows how to score. Didn't see any film in regards to rebounding.

I saw that Kaseem Watson has a twin brother, Kareem. Wondering if he may also be making his way over as well. Probably will depend on who else Golding is able to pick up.

On a side note, I do like Golding's replacements for assistants. Hopefully, they can bring some P4 guys with them.
I read that the brother is staying put at Delaware St. Not sure what article I saw it in, but I do remember reading that. They went to Cal Bakersfield together out of HS, then to DSU together. Maybe Kareem is tired of moving around.

Just got back from being out of town as this site isn't my entire income generator. With that being said, and I havent read all the other threads so perhaps I am repeating myself, Golding hiring Cox back is a strong positive, you could feel the tension early in the season with Golding and Roberts - the first 5 or so games Roberts had his white board and would call out offensive sets, then it stopped suddenly. Hayes seems to be a good offset for Camper, who always could get to the lane but always short-armed his shots. You could say T Watson and Hayes together offset Camper/Barnes/Black Cat. The glaring weakness pending to be addressed is point guard and rebounding.

I like the hiring of Jenkins to replace Kaerwer and seems like an upgrade.

At the end of the day, names are names, Golding is a .500 coach, will talent compensate his deficiencies? He hasn't shown that previously either.

Roberts always looked annoyed to be at UTEP. I guess you can't blame him too much.

On Camper, I don't think I've seen someone consistently short arm in lane floaters like he did. He is a very good defender, like Terrell, but he never seemed to find a consistent offensive game.

We only got the Frank Phillips kids cuz he was a package deal with the coach. The only commit I feel good about is the Delaware St kid but other than that we didn’t sign any highly touted recruits or beat average mid majors to get anyone worth getting excited about. He has about 8 empty spots, he was bound to get someone to commit.

Billy you’re gonna be excited about the next kid coming in!! I hear he’s a real high flyer, can shoot the three and has been recruited by the top programs…… in the Lone Star Conference!!! 😝

Robert’s is on to UNM- he was the only one that did developed anything with Kalu offensively…

Because the player we want is Damarion Vann-Kelly- not their coach and 2nd tier player…that’s why- Camper, Barnes, and David Terrell were better than Taylor
Never even heard of that guy prior to hiring his coach. I’ll stick with the D1 players we’ve been signing.

I don't believe it. Utep has more money Golding is just not a good recruiter. The coaches before Golding recruited better than him and just look what Walden is doing.
Fili GCU doesn’t have a football team and all money goes to men’s basketball. Trust me they spend a lot more than us! Also Grand Canyon University is a lot bigger than you realize with a National Enrollment of about 120,000. It’s not a state University it’s a private university with Alumni and donors across the country. It based in the massive Phoenix Metro area and if they ever get a football team will be competitive in that as well! So No… we do not have more money than them!

What I was going with that is:

“tell me something I don’t know?”

So I assume Golding was given an extension and we are about to find out here soon?
Yes unfortunately smh 🤦🏽 Probably a 2 year-3 year extension hopefully only 2 with restructured incentives and a lesser buy out. As has been mentioned it was most likely voiced that he must get a whole new staff to keep his job and that’s what he did.

Serious question. If we find out he indeed did receive an extension, what are the ramifications for them denying it? What did they have to lose by not being forthcoming about it? My guess is nothing will happen which is really unfortunate.

Senter knows it’s an unpopular decision. He stupidly offered the extension earlier than he should and now he is still choosing to honor it.

UTEP isn’t forthcoming about anything, especially “negative” things.

What he said ☝️

Cruel hard fact that long time Miner fans even myself find it hard to face. If Senter is smart and I don’t know that he is. I would pivot to trying to turn around Utep Football and put money and resources in to that goal. We as Miner Fans like to fancy ourselves as a Basketball school, because of Haskins and Football has always stunk. We however haven’t been thought of as a Basketball school since the early 90s. The days of going to the NCAA on a regular basis are gone at least for the next several years. Senter should know that Football is the money maker and know if resources, facilities, coaching, NIL etc… is put into that and a starved fan base can support a winner that’s the play for the future of all athletics especially moving into the MWC. That’s just a fact and would explain why maybe he believes it’s cheaper to just keep Golding for now.

All evidence says Senter isn't that smart. But he may luck into precisely that scenario.
