So what’s the score?

Perhaps it’s a bit if homerism but I’ve truly bought into our defense being the real deal. Aside from that Boise game, and I can’t simply explain that away, this defense has gotten better week after week. I think we hold them between a FG and TD below their average.

I think we are going to pound the ball, which is FAU’s weakness defensively. Someone else said, this is the game where Dimel ball makes sense. I agree, as long as he doesn’t call the dogs off too early. It won’t be enough to chew clock but not put points on the board. We gotta score this game. I’m of the belief that we CAN but I wonder WILL we?

I hope Dimel’s statement last week about “there will come a time where our offense will have to help the defense” was a foreshadowing of his mentality for this game.
I watched this D, and agree they’re the real deal. Some Key indicators of a good defense are good tackling, proper gap management, and getting pressure on the qb. We seem to do all of those things consistently well… or at least FAR better than any UTEP team I’ve seen in the last decade…

I don't typically enter the prediction game, but here goes. I'm thinking ( maybe mostly hoping) that our defense is even better than we give them credit for. They have come up stout stopping drives over and over. Our offense is so vanilla and predictable so combining the O and D I come up with ...
Miners 31
FAU 21
Wish me luck!
It’s not so much Vanilla, it’s the inefficient drive killers. UTEP could’ve put a big hurt on La Tech if not for those those fumbles from our top backs. Second, no one has been able to stop Cowing. Our opponents know Dimel is run first so that O line has to be getting better push off the line. They did not get that against La Tech as they did a great job fighting off their blocks, filling gaps and wrapping up at the first level.
UTEP will come out aggressive tomorrow and that can’t lead to “hands to the face”, “holding” or leading with the helmet.
Don’t forget UTEP is out the 1st half with their top LB tomorrow.

Need to check your score, playa….

If UTEP scores in the 30s I like our chances of coming home to College GameDay.

Hope you're wrong too. Nothing personal. Hope I’m right. The luster of next week's game is greatly determined by the outcome of today's.

I don't want people to jump off our small bandwagon if things don't go our way today. Next week's game is still huge.

I asked on another thread and never got an answer. When was the last time we had a winning record and beat a ranked team?
Could not tell you.

It’s never happened. UTEP has never had a winning record when they have beat a Top 25 team. Either at the time of the game or at the end of the season.

It depends. I am rooting for our team to win, but I just don't have faith in Dimel and his ways. Hope I'm wrong.

If we were guaranteed to get one win out of the next two I would pick UTSA, but that would mean we already lost some fan momentum going into next week. Like many of us have already mentioned, a win today would be HUGE.

History has shown us we've never won an east coast game or beat a ranked team when we have a winning record. It's not just a Dimel problem it's a UTEP football problem.

I'm the same, if we could only win one of the two, I'll take next week's game. I'm fully prepared to lose the next 2.

I'll take a shot. 2004 against Fresno st. Capacity crowd in the Sun Bowl. Miners won. We also beat a ranked Houston team in 2012 or 13 but I don't know if we had a winning record.

I think Fresno lost their ranking the week before when they lost to LT. They ended up regaining it later in the year but didn't have it for our game.

We were 1-3 when we beat UH and finished the season 4-8.

It’s never happened. The 2004 game was in Fresno, not in El Paso.

Hardison has a higher QBR than FAU's QB. So that's a plus.

But we're UTEP and playing in the Eastern Time Zone, so that's minus.

UTEP 21
FAU 23

I could swear I was at that game. Funny how time plays tricks on your memory. And by funny I mean sad.
Fresno was 3-2 in that 2000 game. We did have a winning record (8-2) and played a ranked TCU in 2000, it wasn't pretty.

It’s a dumb stat. The 1987, 1988, 2000, 2004, and 2005 teams didn’t play any Eastern Time Zone games. The very average 2010 team lost by 4 points to Marshall. The 2014 team didn’t play any games there either. So only one of our “best” teams over the last 35 years played a game there and lost by 4 points.

If you suck and are playing on the road, you’re not winning much anyway, no matter the time zone.

That was the Tomlinson game. He broke all the records that day. Ieft a sour taste in my mouth. I wish Kugler had allowed AJ to break the single game record against North Texas a few years ago. Pulled him in the third quarter with over 300 rushing yards if I remember correctly.

That's a good point. I feel much better about breaking the east coast curse today.
