Successful Athletic Year?

The Football team under second year Coach Kugler had a winning season and played in a Bowl. The Basketball team went 22-11, finished 2nd in the conference and got an NIT bid. Both programs made it to the postseason and should be considered a successful year. Yet, I feel disappointed. How does everyone else feel?

That is why I insist and insist that Floyd's arrogant neurotic attitude doesn't help but nobody seems to get it.

I think that's the best way to put it. Nobody expected a bowl appearance in football and anything less than an NCAA appearance for basketball would have been a disappointment

I couldn't be happier with coach kugler and the football program. The trajectory of the football program is pointed straight up. They are going to be better this year. I love how they do things the right way and represent the university. Keeping Kugler needs to be something stull starts working on now.

The basetball program is much murkier. Half the schools in C-USA don't put basketball on the front burner. While everyone puts everything in for football, basketball is of little importance to many cusa schools. UTEP devouts much more money and resources to basketball than any other school. With that being the case it is unacceptable to not make the ncaa tournament in five years. In this very weak conference we should make the tournament.

The bigger issue is the continued employment of Tim Floyd. Coach Floyd is universally reviled and hated outside El Paso. I dont have a problem taking a chance on a coach with baggage. However, if the results dont come quickly the coach's reputation will begin to tarnish a schools image i think that has started to happen. Like or not Floyd's rep has hurt his ability to recruit. This is why he has continually had to take risks on kids who wont qualify. His reputation dooms him in his quest for top or middle of the pack recruits.

The bottom line is that if this is a basketball school like most claim five years without a tournament birth is unnaceptable. Its also puzzling that people give Floyd a pass for not reaching the level of success that his three predecessors achieved.

Moderately successful. The football team exceeded expectations and appear to be on the right track. The basketball team finished 2nd in the conference which just about matched preseason expectations, but they suffered so many close losses and often seemed to play (down) to the level of their competition. If only they had a good point guard, a field general, the team wouldn't look lost on offense for long stretches in some of their tough losses. Now nobody seems to agree on how good the team will be next year.

I'm not in the fire Floyd camp, but he does need to do something about the point guard situation. I appreciate that he's trying to build a consistent program with a constant influx of talent, and I believe he is achieving that. He's not building for a single year (like Barbee) and leaving the cupboard bare when they all graduate. We're a consistent 20+ win program now and we made the NIT. But we have an immediate need for a field general and he needs to address that. We're so close to breaking through to the next level, but we suffered so many close, disappointing losses this year. It was a very frustrating season.

For Alvino.... What is your specific experience of his arrogance? To whom is he arrogant...the players, fans, media, officials. Can you elaborate on your hostile attitude?

Are you happy with Tim Floyd as the Utep Basketaball Coach ?
Do you think he has been successful here ?
Has he taken us to the NCAA during his five years here ?

If your answer to these question are yes I and it is in fact true, then I withdraw what I said, if not, what I said stands.
