I first found MinerDigs back in 1999, during what would become Charlie Bailey's final season as UTEP's football coach. As a new member of this board I wanted to contribute, but, as I was living in San Diego at the time, I couldn't provide any news or inside information. With unwarranted confidence in my analytic ability, writing ability, and my memory of UTEP Athletics, I thought that I could contribute by writing analyses. One of the first analyses that I wrote, perhaps my very first analysis, was comparing Bob Stull's tenure as head coach to Charlie Bailey's. I pointed out how Stull's teams had improved every year, learning to "crawl" with 4-8 record in his first season, which was an improvement over the one win team that he inherited, to learning to "walk" with a 7-4 record his second year, and then to "run" with a team that finished with a 10-3 record and a bowl berth (this was back when bowl berths weren't the participation trophies they are now). I then pointed out how Bailey's teams had reached the "crawl" stage with 4-7 and 3-8 seasons the two previous years, and asking when Bailey's teams would get to the walk and run stages, hoping that '99 would be that year.

Some of the responses surprised me. I was called a "fair weather fan" and told that Bailey's current team could beat anybody. I was shocked. I certainly didn't think of myself as a fair weather fan, and I knew that my family would die laughing at the absurdity of someone labeling me with that moniker.

The reason that I bring this up is that if we fast forward 25 years to today I'm sure that, had a just joined this board and posted an analysis, instead of being called a fair weather fan I would be called a troll. In fact, based on my typical posts on here over the last several miserable years, I believe that the only reason that I haven't been called a troll is because I'm such an old fart on here that I'm somehow insulated from it. Many other posters here, making complaints very similar mine, have been stamped with that designation.

Let's take everyone's favorite "troll" on here, Kane. He has been banned on here, and returned under a different name, too many times to count. I have been opposed to every single banning. In my opinion, the closest any of his past behaviors ever came to being "troll-like" were when he and one or more other posters would derail a thread with a completely unrelated back and forth. He always seemed to take 100% of the blame for those derailings, as he was labeled a "troll," but, as I often pointed out, it takes two to tango.

As to why he was labeled a "troll," it was because he so often criticized Miner coaches, teams, and ADs. But here's the thing: he was, in my opinion, right much more often than he was not. Yes, he called for the firing of some coaches much quicker than most of the rest of us, but in each case he was proven right. Yes, he frequently criticized our athletic programs, but you know what? I agreed with him far more often than I didn't. Now I have disagreed with him plenty of times, but when I have, instead of crying that he's saying mean things about the Miners and calling him a troll, I have tried a different approach: countering him with facts and a different perspective, often leading to an intelligent discussion rather than name calling, which I believe makes for a better experience on this board.

It's not just Kane, though, that keeps getting dismissed as a "troll." Recently, anyone who complains about the Miners is prone to be labeled as such, including guys line Fanatico and Corona. I can't adequately describe how utterly ridiculous this is. I've met both guys a few times. Each time at a UTEP/UTSA game here in San Antonio. Neither of them live here, meaning that they had to spend much more time and money than I did to go to those games to cheer on the Miners, as all I had to do was drive to the other side of town. And cheer they did. This is not the behavior of "trolls." By the way, Corona wasn't around for those great Miner Basketball teams of the 80s and early 90s that greatly influenced the fandom of many of us on this board, making his willingness to travel anywhere in Central, South, and East Texas to watch UTEP all the more impressive.

If you believe that only positive, optimistic posts belong on this board, then fine, post those type of threads. But many, if not most, of us on here come to discuss all things Miner related, the good, the bad, and ugly. And if you haven't had your head buried in the sand the last several years, you'll recognize that there has been an over abundance of bad and really ugly. If you read a post where someone points out some UTEP warts, instead of dismissing the criticisms with name calling, how about trying to provide an intelligent counter argument? This is a discussion board, after all.

PS. One final note about Kane. He is often criticized as never having anything positive to say about the Miners. Please go back and see who was the most convinced that we would get an MWC invite. You might also see that he countered a criticism of the Basketball Team's win at UCSB, calling it a good win over a Div1 team on the road. There are other examples.

Thanks for the kind words Maniac. Has any “troll cop” looked in the Cowboys thread? Pretty much every post in there is complaining about them. Believe it or not, the Cowboys have been more successful than UTEP has. Still a bunch of “complaints” and wanting people fired posts in there. Why is UTEP different?

If you enjoy losing, hey great, I do not. I am tired of seeing poor performances and retaining coaches who aren’t good enough. UTEP Athletics is a business, it’s not a charity for cancer patients.

Thank you, Maniac! I still think you have one of the loudest, most passionate voices in the arena, a true die hard supporter.

As for me, I just call it like I see it, no sugar coating or excuses. It wasn’t that long ago that I’d have endless arguments with Kane (who I used to call Shovel Shit). But something changed for me along the way. A 7-6 season once in a blue moon just doesn’t cut it anymore.

I know UTEP’s long history of struggles, but I truly believe this program has the potential to be a force in the G4 with the right leadership and the right coaching hires. I’m sorry if I come across as harsh or grouchy, but the product we’ve been given isn’t good enough when I know we’re capable of so much more.

Rest assured, if we start winning, you’ll see me posting plenty of positive feedback.

While Kane IS a troll, he DOES make a lot of valid points. Beating the dead horse of negativity is not a plus when having a conversation. Just because we have hope and too much patience doesn't mean we accept mediocrity. We can't hire a coach and suddenly become Alabama. No need to ONLY point out that we suck and anyone that has hope or patience is a blind homer on every single thread. This IS a UTEP message board. Most of us are fans of UTEP. We want to win. We hope to win. And in many cases, we expect to win. Repeatedly telling us we are stupid and accept sucking IS being a troll that is trying to draw comments/traffic to the site. I have ZERO doubt Kane is a troll even though I do agree with most of his constant negative shit. (I think utepp1966 is a troll too)

While maniac points out a couple positives, I would argue only the bump on the ONE win is a positive comment. He adds no value on evaluation, recruiting, upside, etc. It is ALWAYS about "brownzling" and such. We got it already, bruh....you don't like him. Stop already. We don't either.

Look, I am USUALLY the first to jump off the bandwagons. Follow me on X and you'll see me bash IMMEDIATELY (and tag) when enough is enough. I have HATED a lot of hires. I HATE Senter and I have met with him, however I don't ONLY complain as I can praise too. Kane can't. Saying ONE win is a good win isn't enough to justify not being a troll . And for the record, I believed we would get the MWC invite almost immediately, but I also mouthed off on X if UTEP were to screw it up.

Kane. I can say I love my Cowboys while still saying I hate Jerry Jones. I hate the Dak contract as he hasn't proven he can win. BUT, I can also HOPE and PRAY we win. I love Overshown... We beat a horrible team yesterday. I am happy. We got lucky AF last week. I was happy. Am I accepting mediocrity? Nope. Jerry needs to go. MCCarthy needs to go. Dak needs to go. CeeDee needs to go.....but what else can I do? Dude, I barely even know when UTEP or Dallas play anymore....ugh...

Ill still read all the crap on here because in it somewhere, there's good info regardless of what person posts it. I'm just not drunk enough to go back and forth anymore....LOL

Peace out!

Dude, that's exactly the difference in you and a troll (kane)..... BTW....how's your lady friend that met up with us at Tortuga? I haven't seen/heard from her in a while...

Even though I've not posted on here nearly as much as many of you, I am as passionate of fan as there is. I joined this board the same year that MM did, 1999 when Darren created it because I couldn't find another place like it. I had to re-up my membership in the early 2000's for some reason...which escapes me now. I fly all over the country to see bb and fb games. I was in Vegas for this week's tournament. I attend in EP as much as possible. The ONLY thing I'll miss about the CUSA is the proximity of playing MTSU and WKY from my home here in Nashville. I've met several posters on this board throughout the years. The latest was in Chicago when we played Northwestern.

All that to say, this board is still of value to me because of people like those mentioned in the OP and MM, himself. Thank you! I suppose you can say I'm now a member of the "old fart" club, but I'll remain a rabid Miner fan until my dying day. I remain hopeful that athletics department will continue to grow in commitment and vision by the AD and President.

Thanks again for the post MM.

GO MINERS!

The definition of a troll is " someone who always has to have the last word even though they're right or wrong.

That’s your opinion man. Trolls usually post garbage rumors and make outrageous predictions and statements. I don’t do that.

I have already stated, I don’t celebrate wins over garbage teams and I definitely don’t celebrate them during garbage years. Wow we beat FIU and Kennesaw this football season. Let’s organize a parade!!!

I don’t expect Alabama or Gonzaga results. I do expect NMSU or LaTech results though. There’s no reason for UTEP not to equal or better their results on a consistent basis. LaTech has 2 CUSA men’s basketball titles and 2 Division titles in football, also shared a 3rd. They’ve been in CUSA a decade less than UTEP and they still have more.

When players like Oyenma leave, a lot of fans get upset and trash them. I don’t do that. UTEP isn’t my parents or my kids. It ain’t that personal.

Those were the days. It’s infuriating to see NMSU win 10 games and beat Auburn last year, but every year the majority of fans are making excuses here.

When are we going to win 10 games? Win a bowl? Beat an Auburn?

Well thought out and I 100% agree. I think we all have disagreed with Kane many times but I have developed more of respect for him. It's ok to disagree with people. He generally stays on topic. Does he get off topic on occasion? Sure, but we all do. However, most of us are willing to bring the conversation back to the original topic as well.

There are others that just name call without adding anything of substance to the conversation and, to me, those are the true trolls. I prefer Kane to these people any day.

Thanks. That is what makes a message board good. Having disagreements is what makes them work. It’s not personal. Once you’ve said your piece, move on if you’re done with the subject.

Once you’ve said your piece, move on if you’re done with the subject.

Practice what you preach. You post the same exact things in every thread.

You already admitted you don't attend games. I can put money that you never attended UTEP. The only reason you are here is to get attention.

This board needs Kane. He keeps things honest and points out inconsistencies. This board is better thanks to him.

There are no trolls on here, except those that come to advertise, there are annoying assholes on here, but to each their own.😁😁😁
Speaking of which, you all remember "Norman from Norman"? I'm in Norman and would sure like to toilet paper his/her house.

She’s still out in EP doing her thing. She stays active on social media. Next time I’m in town I’ll invite her and we’ll go visit you.
That'd be cool, however after covid, I was forced to close Tuga. Just couldn't make it back.
Let me know. We can always still meet up for food n drinks.

Not really. He just posts the same things over and over again. It's nauseating.
Says the guy who replies to basically every post I make. His two posts in this thread are about me, despite me not mentioning him.

Look in the UNM Lobo thread and he responded to about 10 of my posts, I never answered them and he still kept replying.

I am so “nauseating”, but he’s always there. Responding and try to argue with me. I think he has a crush on me. Very sad. Please go to match.com for an hombre of your own.
