UTEP athletics -- what I like best

Just a few line items to get you started:

(*) UTEP athletics is big enough to provide our student-athletes a national stage, but not so large they get lost in the process. UTEP can be an athlete's second home, for a lifetime.

(*) In every sport I have studied, UTEP support staffers -- trainers, equipment managers, video staff, coaches -- genuinely care about the kids and their welfare. A spirit of good will prevails.

(*) Sun Bowl Stadium, one of the truly unique settings in all of college football, can get loud when the Miners are on a rally. Visiting fans are always envious of what we tend to take for granted.

(*) Ditto for the Don Haskins Center. When the Miners are competitive, so are the fans. Remember in 2016, the second-half rally from 15 down to beat Western Kentucky? Or the post-season victory in about 2014 over Oregon State? For $5, I sat in the upper rim of the Don, where I witnessed a riot of support. My ears are still ringing.

I'm just getting started. I'm sure you have plenty to add.

What do you like best about intercollegiate athletics at Oxford on the Interstate?

Not the ending we would have preferred but it does show how passionate and supportive the fan base is towards championship caliber teams. To this day in my opinion that game is the loudest I have ever heard the Don Haskins. There were times I was ready to blackout from the strength of the decibels.

Kool footage. That group of Miners definitely connected with the fan base.

When they saw that support and heard that volume in the Don, can you imagine how rivals women's programs must have reacted? Let's get our groove back.

The other D1 schools dont have trainers and staff that dont care? They cant be an athletes second home either?

Yeah Im sure the OU, UT, and Texas Tech fans are super envious of the Sun Bowl. Who is envious? NMSU and Northern Arizona?

Wow, a game vs WKU and a CBI game, which was in 2009 btw, are examples of how awesome the DHC is? Talk about setting the bar low.

All these things you listed are why UTEP is an afterthought right now. These arent accomplishments, just something to make fans like you feel better.

Aha, there you are. I will not dignify your comments with a reply, but thanks for clearly identifying yourself and stating your intentions.

Fellow posters had tried to explain to this newbie here, but I'm a slow study and didn't quite grasp it. Now I do.

One more thing I like about UTEP: Walking across campus to the Sun Bowl on game day, seeing all the families and friends tailgating ... the aroma of fajitas on the grill, cold beer, Frisbees in flight, music ranging from C&W to conjunto. So kool.

In my day, alcohol on campus was strictly forbidden. First violation got you in an audience with the dean of students. A second could get you bounced out of school. Today?

On game day, if you don't already have a beer, somebody will hand you one.

At least I know when we played Oregon St. Welcome to the board cheerleader man!

One more thing I like about UTEP athletics: When the school hosts a big track and field meet at Kidd Field, the energy and sounds bounces off the mountains, and shakes your chest.

The triangular meets of the late 1960s and 1970s, vs. the likes of Oregon, Southern Cal and other national powers, the venerable old stadium would fill early with fans, from all over the nation. A carnival atmosphere.

With the arrival of Jim Senter, there is a spark of rekindled interest in T&F, perhaps to include an El Paso-based group of volunteers and donors. Stand by.

I know the Sun Bowl is in need of some cosmetic repair and due for some upgrades, but she is still a gem that is maybe taken for granted. I think some of the younger folks in El Paso identify with it more for the next big concert rather than for Miner football. I'm cautiously optimistic that will change.

Given the poor W-L record and weak connection with the student body, you might be right. Almost certainly so.

One more thing I like about UTEP athletics: The dance team. Scenery adds to the game day experience.

I like the fact season tickets for UTEP football cost as little as $55 apiece. A fan who plans ahead can get six home games, for the price of five.

Another thing to like about UTEP athletics: If you reach out, department staffers will recognize your support, meet you half-way.

Not sure the same can be said at the Notre Dames, Alabamas and Ohio States of the world. No rip on those high-profile brands per se, just the law of the jungle.

Where budgets rise, issues related to staff size, regulations and logistics rise right along side. This interferes with personal contact.

So far, this hasn't happened at UTEP, where A.D. Jim Senter insists that every person matters.

Been thinking ... what if posters who identify with trollers created threads labeled as "for trollers only"?

This would give you a separate but equal sandbox, so you need not be bothered by those of us more optimistic-types who choose to view the glass as half-full.
