I came across a system online nearly 20 years ago, and have saved the formulas. Nowadays, It is hard to find a link to the guy who invented this, but his name was Prouty and he used to calculate these numbers back in the 90’s in the ACC and he usually matched up with all-conference teams and players of the year, so I give him credit for these formulas.

This system takes away any subjectivity and is all statistical based, which I like and takes 4 factors individually and then averages them out to get a final number:

1) Offensive Efficiency
Tot Pts / ((FGA x 2) + FTA) – Measure how efficient a scorer you are, you get bonus credit for making a 3 and having a strong FG and FT %. Basically how many points you get vs. shots taken.

2) Total Offense
Pts + Assists*2 – TO / Min Played
Gives credit to making assists (guards) and balances with pure scorers, and you lose points for turning it over.

3) Possessions Gained
(Rebounds + Steals + (Blocked Shots/2) – Fouls) / Min Played
Logic is not every block results in a possession so you get 50%, but any rebound or steal gains you a possession and fouling gives it back to your opponent (or they continue with a new possession)

4) Win %
Min Played / (Total Team Minutes / 5) * Team Win %
If you play lots of minutes, you are critical to your team, and if team wins games, you are contributing to wins.

Wow this is really cool. Thx.

03-05 and 08-11 had some really great UTEP players.

The Sweet 16 team had like 5 or 6 in the top 30. What a team that was. So close to being in the Final 4 because Cinci just wiped the floor with Memphis State, after edging us, to get there. Oh, what could’ve been!

Nice work Tenacious D.

For the record, my personal all-time favorite Miner is #27 Ralph Davis - at 6-5, got rebounds, had a nice mid-range jumper, could handle the ball, and did a little bit of everything. Not saying the best player, but I just liked his game and demeanor on the court.

Plus he is famous for "Davis shoots, whyyyyyyy"...The Miners win, the Miners win". "AAAGHHHHHHH"

Call me a homer, but I gotta go with Hardaway. Never seen a UTEP player that could make an impact on the court like he did. So quick, so fast, so strong, such amazing body control, great finisher and made everybody else on the court better to top it off.

Eddie Rivera and Smooth round out my top 3.

Agree on old Timbug as well. Along with all the qualities you mentioned, he was an outstanding defender despite his height. He was also an unbelievable competitor. I think he benefited greatly playing with Jeep Jackson. Jeep is also one of my favorites. In more recent history, I would go with Randy Culpepper; amazing player on both ends.

Julyan Stone. If only he could shoot.

I loved Jeremy Williams and Earvin Morris. Always made the games exciting to watch.

But NOBODY was as exciting as RCIII. NOBODY

I had a love/hate relationship with Bo. Never would have guessed he was top 30.

I can never forget Culpepper's game against Central Florida, it was somewhat competitive early but during the second half he hit three after three after three. They pushed him further out and he hit another. CF really looked like they just gave up, let him shoot it from 40ft. He had another game like it here a few weeks later against ECU. He had a dunk against Wyo in the Sun Carnival which was amazing as well.
